Help safely and quickly raise the pH in your freshwater aquarium for more alkaline water conditions with API pH Up Aquarium Water Treatment. Different fish need different pH levels to stay healthy. For example, most freshwater fish thrive in levels between 6.5 and 7.5, but Cichlids and crustaceans require higher pH levels between 7.8 and 8.8. Levels that are too high or too low can cause stress, illness and death, so testing is crucial to the health of your fish. API pH Up Aquarium Water Treatment is designed to raise pH in water that tests at an undesirable level. It is fast-acting, colorless and easy to use. It will not cloud or color aquarium water and because it's phosphate- and nitrate-free, it will not encourage algae growth.

Alkaline buffer works best for me

I have two large pieces of driftwood in my freshwater aquarium which release tannins that can lower pH. I have tried many buffers (including African cichlid buffers) to help keep my pH as close to 7.0 as possible. I have found that if pH drops below 6.5, the good bacteria starts to die - which can be a disaster. Combining both Acid and Alkaline buffers seemed too complicated for me. I just use 1/3 to 1/2 teaspoon (for the whole aquarium - not per gallon) of the Alkaline Buffer at a time (depending on my test results - I test pH daily). The most I have needed to add to my 75 gallon aquarium at one time was 1 teaspoon. I like that Alkaline Buffer is phosphate free, too (I use phosphate absorbing resins to remove phosphates). Keeping the pH at a consistent level also makes for much happier and healthier fish.

I purchased this wonderful product to correct the ph in my tank. It worked. My specific problem was that my ph was gradually changing to more acid with each water change. I finally realized that I was causing the problem by using a charcoal filter to filter my replacement tap water. The water filter was leaving my tap water 6.0 acid. Wow! But the product helped and I will never filter my tap water again.

I have been using this product for about one or two months and it is fantastic for adjusting aquarium pH. It does not increase phosphate levels as some other water conditioners or regulators do. Adjusting the pH is simple: dosage is based on a 20gallon tank, check table on the bottle for target pH, one or two teaspoon of both the Acid and Alkaline Buffer, and VOILA!! Your tank pH should read the proper pH that you were targeting. I have a phosphate reactor working in my tank that sometimes plays with the pH of the aquarium so this product is great at adjusting pH back to within limits. And it DOES NOT contain phosphate!!

It works to buffer and maintain PH
6 October 2016

Used for bringing down PH for 7.6 PH tap water. After using product for several days it brought PH down to 6.3 PH constant. I had to use a lot more than originally described but read that portions were for RO water which my water was originally far from that.

Might be good for RO or DI water. Did not work for me
27 July 2013

My tap water is a PH of 7.8, GH 4 and KH 4. My target PH is 7.0. Adding this acid butter to my tank (and also to a separate bucket outside the tank as a back-up test) my PH dropped to about 7.0 like the instructions said, but it just re-bounded the next day. So I double dosed the second time around and same thing. I even tried mixing acid and alkaline buffers together at the proper ratios like the instructions said, and I got the same results; PH rebound the following day. I have not tried this with Deionized water yet and so I am considering buying a DI unit that API makes. This might be a good product if used in different water, but it did not work for my set up with my water...

Perfect for RO water
26 January 2014

These products are the best there are for buffering RO water and arriving at the correct pH. When using straight RO water also use Seachem Equilibrium to restore the minerals removed by RO. Together these three can produce fabulous clean water that will not vary in pH and not be too soft. --- Beware of some buffers which work by adding large amounts of phosphorus --and thereby promote excess algae growth in the planted tank!

THE BEST NON-PHOSPHATE BUFFER
11 July 2014

I HAVE LOST TRACK OF WHEN I STARTED USING SEACHEM'S ALKALINE AND ACID BUFFERS IN MY FRESH WATER AQUARIUMS. THE NON PHOSPHATE FEATURE OF THESE BUFFERS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT IN CONTROLLING ALGAE PROBLEMS. IT TAKES A LITTLE TIME IN THE BEGINNING TO GET USE TO PROPERLY USING THESE BUFFERS, BUT ITS WORTH IT. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS VERY CAREFULLY.

The best way to control pH and KH
4 February 2011

The combination of acid buffer and alkaline buffer is amazing, just as long as you don't read the buffering instructions at the bottom. Those are much too confusing.Instead, buy a KH test kit (and pH if you want), pick a KH value (4-5 is good for freshwater, but check for your particular livestock), and use these products to reach it. If you dose CO2 it will be more challenging but you'll get there eventually. The reason why is that a stable KH is more important than stable pH and those two are much more important than any given pH value. Setting a specific pH is very very difficult because of the large number of salts in aquarium water, but stabilizing KH will take care of a large percentage of them and give you a pretty good, stable pH. That, again, is much more important than any pH value. The fact that these are solid makes them easy to dose and a very good value. For liquid products, you pay for water plus a small amount of solid product. In addition, alkaline buffer in particular is very strong - you need only a tiny bit to raise the KH a lot.

I pump CO2 into my tank and needed something to help stabilize my PH. My plants have exploded in growth now that everything is more balanced. I love all the Seachem products that I've tried, highly recommended.I use:ExcelFlourishAlkaline BufferPurigen

excellent product and service

Seachem has excellent products and Foster and Smith is an excellent source. The alkaline and acid buffer from seachem locks my pH and dKH right where I want them. With a good test kit and their webpage's dosing calculator, changes are easy and very predictable.Initially my pH was too high and my dKH was too low. I first added acid buffer to bring my pH down. After that initial application, my dKH was approaching unstable, so I then used their buffer combination to bring dKH back up while making pH lower. Now I'm spot on for my South American Cichlids and they are obviously very happy. One caveat, IMHO you do need a good set of microgram scales for accurate dosing.Dr.Foster and Smith's shipping rate was better than any of the other sources I found.
