Complaint/ConcernI received the item today in the mail and was surprised to see that although it was "new" in a sealed box, when I opened it up and took a closer look, there was a brown smudge on the white handle of the lightning port. I've never known Apple to give faulty packaging or to give a used item in a sealed "new" box. I don't know what happened. Not sure if it was Apple or Target, resealing a returned/used item. But attached is a photo below of what it looked like upon opening it.Note:For those of you looking to connect an external hard drive to your iPad or iPhone, this is the adapter to get. Getting lightning to USB 3.0 or even lightning to USB-C may not work on bigger external devices as they draw too much power. I'm just a bit surprised and confused.

If you have a Sabrent AU-MMSA USB Stereo 3D Sound Adapter you can connect it to this adapter's USB Type-A slot, then connect a 3.5mm audio cable from a microphone (such as the Sennheiser EW G4 wireless lavalier system) to pipe the external microphone's audio directly into your iPhone. Excellent for the convenience of having good quality audio for your iPhone interviews or vlogging. I was skeptical that this setup would work, but it certainly does work. I'd recommend this adapter if you're trying to do something like what I described. Should also allow you to charge your iPhone and connect external storage devices like card readers, but I haven't tried those use cases.

Initially, it worked splendidly. I relied on it to effortlessly transfer photos from my PC to my iPhone using a USB drive, or directly import raw files from my camera to the iPhone. The USB drive connection required additional power from the lightning port. Regrettably, after 14 months of usage, this adapter is no longer capable of receiving power.

I got a portable SSD HD for my iPhone 12 Pro to save all my video footage. I have plenty of storage space on my iPhone, but I learned in film school that you must have a 2nd place for storage…just in case. This adapter works great. I tried one that should work, but it needs another port to stick in a power source. This adapter has two- one for my HD and one for power. The only con is that the price is high. It’s a genuine Apple product.
I mean, it does what it's supposed to do where the equivalent Belkin lightning to USB C cable wont provide enough juice to even start your average DAW. If you need an adapter to hook up a midi controller, an audio interface, or even a USB microphone to your phone or iPad then this is the cable you will need. It provides the full 5volt out of USB, where the average cable may only provide something closer to 3.3volt.The problem with everything Apple is the cost. You are paying a premium price because it's the only device that can do the job. At the same time, the price you pay for it is way above the average, which is where the issue is. Yes it does what it's supposed to do, but you feel the price gouging from Apple for having to buy it.I give it 3 stars because ... MoreI mean, it does what it's supposed to do where the equivalent Belkin lightning to USB C cable wont provide enough juice to even start your average DAW. This adapter does more than connect a camera to your iphone. Anything that works with an iphone, such as my Shure MVi mic interface, can be used with this adapter. Plug and play. I can now power my mic interface with a booster battery, or plug into the wall. Without this, my iphone would reject it because the MVi uses more power than the iphone 6 wants to support. And that includes my 2nd Gen Ipad 2019 with the same issue.
Perfect - did just what I wanted to link my Focusrite sound card to iPhone GarageBand. I now have a super compact recording setup for my Saxophone! Brilliant.
One of the purposes for this adapter was to connect a USB mouse to my iPad through the lightning connector. Initially, I bought a knock off from Amazon and it wouldn’t work at all until I started doing something manipulating the connectors, particularly the USB connector, and even at that when I got that working And the mouse was mostly working, I couldn’t get the iPad to charge through the device unless I did some more manipulating of the power input connector and the lightning connector going into the iPad. Needless to say, it was hit or miss when I was trying to use it. However, when I got the real Apple adapter, I plugged it in first time worked and I haven’t had any kind of problem with it. Even the mouse works much better response much better with the iPad. So ... MoreOne of the purposes for this adapter was to connect a USB mouse to my iPad through the lightning connector. I bought this cable to connect an iPod to an external DAC, a digital connection. As iPods have no USB output, this or a similar cable is needed to link the Apple lightening port to the USB input on the DAC.I initially tested it with my iPad. When I made the connection, the cable configured itself (cool!) then communicated seamlessly to the DAC.The test came when we tried to connect the iPod. My worries were for naught ... the Apple cable (already configured?) just connected immediately to the DAC.Its also nice that this cable allows charging of the i-device whilst in use.It is a bit wonky for a hand-held iPod, a longer cable would be more user-friendly, but it works fine and I can recommend it for an i-device digital output connection.Cheers!RCBinTN
At first, I was very disappointed when I tried to use this adapter. I had already thrown away the packing materials and was all set to write it off as not being appropriate for attaching an external SSD to my iPhone 12 Pro Max. Fast forward to the good news ... with the right peripheral this works great!Initially, I was trying to transfer photos to a SanDisk 2TB Extreme Pro SSD but it would quickly fail. Even though I had the adapter attached to a 12W charger, I would see an error message, something to the effect that the peripheral needed more power than could be delivered.Thankfully, I had a second type of SSD and I gave that a try. It must use less power than the SanDisk because I am now successfully transferring photos from my iPhone to a T7 Shield 2TB SSD.
