This is not a superfluous review. I bought this machine for reliability and build quality. The best machine I've ever owned and still use is a twelve-year old Mac Mini. I tend to hang on to my devices, so I appreciate the updates for as long that Apple will push them, but I'm not married to MacOS. BATTERY LIFE Meh. I hear a lot of phenomenal things, but my real-world experience on a Zoom call for one hour and 45 minutes (80 participants) drained the battery from 100% to 65%. SCREEN It's okay. I retuned a Dell OLED and an ASUS OLED when I settled on this machine, and both Windows machines were gorgeous, and I miss them. I miss touch screen, too. SIGN-ON I miss Face ID on Windows. This MacBook fits in my leather sling, but the 16" did not. I use my iPad Pro in Sidecar mode to move my WORD document onto my iPad while I have a Zoom call going on the MacBook. WHAT I LOVE Banging speakers with deep base. Play CT 72 smooth jazz or Paul Brown Angel smooth jazz and you will have an appreciation for how good it sounds. Also love my Apple devices talking to each other. Air Drop. Can't live without it. Sidecar is cool, and a life saver at times. Love transferring Notes, too. I draw, doodle and write on my iPad, and transferring over to my MacBook is way cool. WHAT I HATE No touch screen. MacOS or Windows? MacOS: It's okay, but it's that perfect friend who's never late, always right, won every spelling bee in school, dresses perfectly, never lets you down - reliable. I do love Windows because it's the ditzy friend who sometimes forgets an appointment, loses a shoe while running, needs to borrow a few bucks here and there (and forgets to pay it back) but always is a fun time when you're in their company. I like this machine but I'm not in love. I do love my Mac Mini and I will buy an M1 Mini soon to be my in-home base machine. This MacBook is my on-the-run, never-let-me-down machine on the go. Again, build quality and reliability trump anything else out there.

I have been waiting to do this purchase for awhile to replace my 15 in Macbook Pros with a smaller more ālappableā computer. Best Buys fathers day sale was the catalyst to purchase today. I previously looked at the 13 inch macbook but it was too small and lacked the power of the larger 15 inch which I needed. When I tried the 14 inch in the store it seemed like the perfect size. The 16 inch was way too heavy for me to use. During unpacking, I saw the packing materials was not up-to Appleās previous quality standards but really not an issue, i.e, the wrapping paper for the computer was oversized, wrinkled and of a lower quality and the screen protector paper was wrinkled. Apple has had a problem meeting demand, so it could be due to sourcing issues. Where the 15 inch felt heavy and awkward to use on my lap on the couch, the 14 inch felt perfect which is what I wanted. When I use it on my desk, I use an external 27 in LG Ultrafine monitor, logitech MX keys keyboard and MX Master 3 mouse. It is really nice to have the power of the the 16 inch in a smaller lighter package. It has only been a few hours but this laptop met all my expectations. Very happy.

My last MacBook Pro was purchased in 2011, mainly purchased for school... but then sold it after 4-years since I had no use for it. At the time I really liked the machine, but overheating and battery was just horrible and mainly because I had Parallels installed with Windows 7 virtual machine, along with 4x other virtual machines. I made minor upgrades to the memory and installed an SSD (during a time when MacBooks were still upgradable), but still it was not efficient to use as I mainly used Windows for work purposes. I have been using a Surface Pro Tablet PC portable machine for the past 7-years. This MacBook is insane monster when handling multitasking. The machine works at its peak even when just on battery, something I don't think my Surface Pro could ever handle. The screen is just so beautiful almost OLED type of level colors/brightness, even though its just a 14.2" Mini LED screen. Trust me, I've owned two OLED TVs since 2016, currently have a Sony Bravia XR 65" A80J, so anything less would not satisfy me. I don't think I could ever go back to another Intel machine i5/i7 Laptop or Desktop PC, its like going back to legacy hardware from 2010. I mean, even the MacBook Air M1 2020 model is a beast compared to most intel laptops/PCs, and that's a two year old MacBook product. Apple removed the stupid Touch-bar, added better speakers, brought back useful HDMI/SD card ports, and finally brought back MagSafe connection port. In two short years, Apple has changed the game and I really hope Windows learns for this and steps up their game.

I get the dreaded spinning rainbow wheel with more than 5 tabs open (whaaat?) and the touch ID is terrible, constantly refusing to let me in. Maybe it's my fingers, who knows. Anyway, I turned it off in frustration after a couple weeks of troubleshooting. It's the strangest thing, because the specs on the new machine are similar to the old one. An old adage comes to mind: they don't make 'em like they used to. On a positive note, the chassis is very nice and I love the modern shape, lighter weight and smooth open/close as compared to the 2012, but some things seem, well, kinda crappy. The keyboard looks like one cheap piece, set into a shallow trench; the solid black color is weird and I miss the look of each key rising with pride from its own cutout. I do appreciate the full-sized function buttons, but the overall feel is 'clicky' with less action; my old keyboard was silent and met my fingertips with a helpful HELLO, LET'S TYPE! To my nearsighted eyes, the screen is an improvement, for sure. Battery life is bomb. Migration was fast and seamless. Monterey has tons of neato tricks and tweaks to find and enjoy. So overall, this laptop gets a thumbs up from me. I can learn to live with its limits.

Furthermore the battery capacity, energy retention, and ssd storage method (two strips instead of one) that this laptop has is powerful, and makes it suitable for heavy programming and gaming, compared to the MacBook Pro 13in with the M2 chip. So, despite it being a step back from the recent models, it is a worthy investment if you plan taking on a career in the Engineering and Technology sector, and I suppose more so for other careers in general too. I would say this though; be careful when looking for an Ethernet adaptor for this computer as it is not the same as the 2011 - 2017 MacBooks. Those required the one with the chunky thunderbolt plug-in. This one requires the thin thunderbolt plug in (Thunderbolt 4).

I just use the laptop for typical consumer use, surfing the web, emails and word processing, but I could definitely see the speed difference with the additional ram on the 14 inch pro. As for the battery life, the 13 inch M1 pro definitely had better battery, but then again it started with a larger battery as compared to the M1 Air and itās processor consumed less power than the 14 inch and the display was smaller so one would expect that. Having said that the 14 inch pro is nevertheless excellent with battery. I keep it on 24/7 and not connected to charging. I open it, use it, close the lid again and so forth. Depending on use after a week the battery will be down to around 50% and then I charge it again with the MagSafe connection. When it comes to battery life no other manufacturer comes remotely close to Apple. I have also charged the 14 inch with the thunderbolt connection and connected it to a Dell thunderbolt dock for purposes of using dual monitors and it all worked fine. I have not pushed the potential of this laptop. Accordingly the dual fans have never come on. The laptop is always cool to the touch. The laptop is running the latest version of Ventura and the update went without any problems. The price for the 14 inch is steep, but without a doubt this is the finest laptop on the market right now and if you can purchase on sale so much the better.

I picked up the MacBook Pro 14, and I was simply blown away! Yes, it runs fast. I do some video editing and graphic design, and it handles Photoshop and DaVinchi Resolve flawlessly. I also play some games, mostly strategy, and it runs them too! What I like the most, is how it doesn't lose any performance when running on battery, vs plugged in. Sure, playing a game like Cities Skylines will likely drain the battery in 2-3 hours, but it's amazing to actually be able to play it, with high resolution and graphics settings, on a laptop, with no cables attached! And it's smooth. The screen is beautiful. The mini LED is basically like having an OLED colors and contrast, but 3-4X higher brightness. It looks stunning. The computer is virtually silent. The fans stay off 95% of the time (with my use), and even when playing a demanding game, I only know they're running by checking the system monitoring software. I can't hear them unless I put my ear right next to the keyboard. It's seriously impressive. Yes, at 100%, they can get somewhat loud, but I can only get them to run at 100% by forcing it in software, I don't know what you have to do on this laptop use to get them to run this fast. And the laptop can get a little warm at the top of the keyboard, but not uncomfortably hot like most gaming Windows laptops. It's really, barely warm, and again, only when pushing it a bit, in most day-to-day tasks, it stays at the room temperature. I can probably keep going with details for a while, there is so much to like about this machine, but I want to respect everyone's time, so let me just add a couple of quick points. The speakers are great. The web camera is better than most, it's very good, the design is clean and pleasant, the ports are good, and the fingerprint scanner works the first time, every time... it's an excellent laptop. I want to also mention a couple of negatives. Nothing too bad, and I still live the laptop overall, but nothing is perfect. The first thing that I'm not 100% happy with, is MacOS. I can get all the software I need, and it runs great, but Apple is still a bit too tyrannical with their software, requiring a bunch of passwords, and limiting your customization options. It can also be a bit glitchy, sometimes virtual buttons get stuck, or the OS can feel slower than this laptop actually is with its animations, or just in general the way it handles RAM. Same apps can sometimes launch in half a second, and at other times take 6-7 seconds to load, it can feel inconsistent. You can run Windows on it, with Parallels Desktop, or one of several free VM options, which I thought would make it perfect, but keep in mind that you can only use an ARM version of Windows, so not everything works on it too. Still, very impressive seeing Windows 11 running on it just as good if not better than many Windows laptops, even in the Virtual Machine. The next thing, that's just kind of meh, is keyboard. It's not bad, the keys feel nice, but its backlight might look uneven under certain angles, which cheapens the look of the machine a bit, IMO. It looks fine from above, though. I usually keep the backlight off for this reason. Not a bad keyboard, but there is also nothing "magic" about it. I've seen better, and I've seen worse. And finally, the build quality can be a hit or miss. The first unit that I got had a slightly misaligned lid (against the bottom half, when closed). I exchanged it, and the second unit was creaking around the keyboard when opening and closing the lid. I returned it too and almost gave up on them, but a few days later, decided to give it just one more shot with a different color (the first two were Space Grey). I picked up a Silver model, and this one is perfect. So if you get one and something doesn't feel right, you might want to check another unit to make sure you get the good one, or just don't be picky like me. I assume most people will never notice or questions things like that. One final thought. This Macbook Pro 14, even at the base level, is a real deal. It's worth every penny they ask for it, and if you can get it on sale, or a good open box unit, it's probably the best value out there at the moment!

The colors are extremely accurate and the mini LEDs in this display make it so you have near OLED levels of true blacks when displaying dark/contrasty images. The only gripe I have with the display is I still am not the biggest fan of the notch but it is something that you get used to pretty quickly. The performance of this laptop is another thing that is a sight to behold. While Apple silicon is still having some hiccups it does really work way more efficiently than the outgoing Intel processors. The processor in this MacBook stays impressively cool and doesn't get no where near as hot as the previous laptops I have had along with the fans seemingly never really having to kick in. Along with that, for the first time I have a laptop that doesn't have to throttle its processing power to make sure that the battery can last a decent amount. This makes it so I don't have to carry a laptop charger with me at all times even if I am doing something more intense than a word document or web browsing. Other notable things about this laptop is the impressive quality of sound and even bass coming from the built in speakers. The build quality is phenomenal especially when you compare it to the Surface Laptop Studio that I had before this (that laptop had a squeaky hinge and some flex to the laptop which was unsettling). The keyboard on this laptop is one of the best and on the same level as Microsoft's Surface line, but the track pad on this MacBook is something that still has to be beat. I do wish this had something of 2 in 1 capabilities and even just a touch screen because sometimes its just easier to touch it on the screen instead of moving the cursor around to get it where you want. Otherwise this is an impressive laptop that is great if you are productivity focused. It can run some games extremely well but due to not being compatible with the vast majority of PC games, gaming is one of the things that makes up this laptop's archille's heal.

I have paid for some additional software but this was reasonable and most of it was a "one off" where you would not have to pay again. My Adobe subscription simply involved me downloading the Mac version to my Mac Laptop and entering the passwords and user details and then it was all up and running. Overall I would highly recommend this Laptop and the 14 inch screen is the ideal compromise between size and portability. I love mine and hopefully it will last me a good few years before I need to upgrade it. Looking at second hand Apple products, they seem to hold their value really well and again, this is another plus for the future. All in all I am a happy shopper and really pleased with my purchase. John Lewis's price was really competitive and to cap it all they include a 2 year guarantee.

Meanwhile this laptop has been sitting on my lap for the last 2 hours and only feels as warm as I do normally, my body heat has heated this thing up more than its processor has. All that being said my main gripes with this machine are the lack of upgradability. While I would prefer to be able to upgrade RAM, 16GB will suffice for the life of this machine. The 512GB SSD on the other hand is laughable considering the price of this laptop. Giving users the option of an available m.2 slot would have been an incredible feature of this laptop that would have extended its life cycle significantly. All that being said picking up one of these now that the M2 variants are out is an absolute steal. This machine was $2K new last year and I was able to pick it up for $1400 and I am in no way missing out on wifi 6e, HDMI 2.1, or the new bluetooth version. The M1 Pro is still plenty powerful, the screen is best in class, the trackpad demolishes every single Windows laptop, and the I/O is everything I need. If you are a creative and looking for a new portable power house, pick up this laptop and you will not regret it.
