I was waiting for an M2 27 iMac but when I read that no new Apple processor (M1/M2) 27 iMac was going to be offered by Apple, I bought a MacBook Pro. I am used to processing my pictures on a 27 screen so it made sense to purchase this display. It feels frustrating as the display is more costly than prior base 27 iMacs and about the cost of an upgraded M1 24 iMac. On the other hand, the display is bright and colors are rich and appear accurate so the display very much meets my needs for processing photographs and short video's with Lightroom/Photoshop/Final Cut Pro. I often print my pictures so the ability to change reference modes to match what I am working on is very helpful so I get accurate color and intensity rendering. Ports on the back of the display are helpful as is using the single USB Type-C (Thunderbolt 3) to charge the MacBook Pro. I went with the standard glass as reflections are not a major issue and I keep the room on the dark side when editing pictures and I am happy with my choice. In the end, an excellent monitor but I took one star off as I think this should have been an iMac and not a monitor for this price an I would have preferred a less cluttered work-space with one device rather than two.

The highest quality 5K screen to date. If you're wondering why 5K is important it's for 2 reasons. Retina/HiDPI and viewing angle. What that means is you have 4x the pixel density of a 2560x1440 monitor, meaning you can run "scaled" 1440p resolution with 4 times the clarity, which allows lots of workspace and proper scaling. This can NOT be done properly on a 4K screen, which is what many of the haters are saying is a better value. Try both side by side and make up your own mind. Your eyes will thank you for it! Also, being 5K means it's larger than 4K so you can have a video at full 4K while having menus and toolbars out of the frame (I'm not a video editor but I know plenty). Believe me, these screens are so easy to work with and I own dozens of screens, workstations and TV's (A 5K OLED would give it a run for it's money but they don't exist and an 8K doesn't scale properly and are too large for workstations anyhow). Speakers are great as far as monitor speakers go. Yes, there are better webcams but I didn't buy this for that purpose as this is a "work" monitor not a giant Siri/iPad/toy. This monitor wants to be run on Monterey, but works on BigSur without full integration.

The Apple Studio Display is just phenomenal. Other than buying an iMac 5k or the LG Ultrafine 5k display, there is no comparable display, and even those aren't quite as good as this one, as it gets up to 600 nits brightness so it has limited HDR compatibility (not a lot but better than the others mentioned). As a video editor, I want the clearest picture quality available and 4k displays of this size show way too many visible pixels for me, so the extra cost to get the "Retina" quality display is absolutely worth it for me. Color accuracy is also great, no calibration needed. The build quality is exactly what you'd expect from Apple, metal and sturdy. I have no complaints about the stand height, it's perfect for me. The webcam isn't the best but it works well if the lighting is good. I know that will depend on an individual's situation, my display has a window right behind it so I get good light during the day. If you like Apple build quality, want a high resolution display with a dense pixel count, want excellent built in speakers and don't mind a "decent" webcam, this is probably the best display for you if you can afford it.

General productivity? You can get by with cheaper alternatives. Gaming? Stay FAR away from this. If you have a need for any of the below, then you should give this consideration despite the hefty price. - Sharp text/UI graphics that won't strain your eyes when sitting in front for hours. - One of the few glossy screens for vibrant and accurate colors - Impressive speakers that won't take up space on your desk - A well-built monitor that works well with MacOS for quickly waking your computer from sleep and adjusting brightness. - You don't do any HDR editing or gaming and don't mind the ... MoreAfter using it for less than a month, my experience has mostly been positive. As of late 2022, there still aren't many monitors that offer an experience like the Studio Display. You'd either have to go with the cheaper but at-times problematic LG Ultrafine 27" 5K or the very expensive Pro Display XDR. Again for most people, they can probably get by with something like a 27" 4K monitor but if you're looking for a high-end experience, you're unfortunately going to have to pay a premium.
I had high hopes for this monitor, and as a “I own everything Apple” guy, I’m sad I have to write this review. For what you get, this monitor is a joke. First off, they seriously couldn’t give us 120hz pro motion? Not to mention virtually all monitors above the $500 price point have a built in KVM switch so you can use it with at least two devices. Big FYI… no physical power or settings adjustment buttons. All monitor adjustments are done via software from your Mac. Same goes for the bulit in camera. This means if you can get it to work with a PC, you’re stuck with default settings. While I appreciate the speakers, they’re not impressive enough for me to replace my current desktop solution (Sonos). While I appreciate the speakers, they’re not impressive enough for me to replace my current desktop solution (Sonos). What’s more, this is essentially the same monitor intruduced on the 27” iMac in 2017. Yet it retails at just $200 less than what the entire iMac sold for. Pretty obvious the profit margine on this monitor is a big one for Apple. I strongly encourage shoppers to look elsewhere. I ended up getting a 32” Dell Ultra Sharp monitor instead, at nearly half the price of this one. The picture is unmatched compared to the Studio Display. It doesn’t come with a camera or speakers, but I would rather pair my monitor with nicer ones anyway.
Being an Apple user for 40 years, I have experienced many of the various monitors. Cinema Display, Thunderbolt Display, and now Studio Display. The Studio Display is a 5K monitor, which in some ways feels like a previous 27” 5K iMac without the brains. In using it the Studio Display I have been torn as to how I feel about it, and if I am the right user for the Studio Display. I use a 14” MacBook Pro for road warrior use, but when home run in clamshell (lid closed) with an external monitor. To this point, no matter how much I have spent, no monitor, from any manufacturer, has matched the resolution and clarity of the 5K iMac. Until now, that is. One USB-C / Thunderbolt cable connects my MacBook Pro to the monitor. With a 96W charge my battery is topped quickly. One USB-C / Thunderbolt cable connects my MacBook Pro to the monitor. With a 96W charge my battery is topped quickly. The monitor has three USB-C ports for other connections if needed. This is ideal for leaving peripherals plugged in while hitting the road with the laptop, and then quickly plugged in when back home. Speakers sound awesome. Webcam is good, but needs a software fix to be better, which Apple has promised is coming. It is only 60Hz refresh rate, which is disappointing as my 14” MBP, iPad and iPhone Pro use 120Hz and ProMotion, with HDR. For $1,599 I would expect the Studio Display to have these specs as well. If color accuracy is important, and you are an Apple used, this monitor is right. If you a semi-pro, this probably makes you the target user. Of you want Apple quality, and ease of connections when using an Apple notebook, this is the best option I have found since the Thunderbolt Display. $1599. It is a tough sell. At $1,399 I wouldn’t quibble. But the value of the Studio Display all depends on you.
When this first came out, I consumed the backlash like everyone else did. I was skeptical, but I knew I would try to get it at some point. I happened to luck up on when shortly after the launch at a Best Buy in my city so I jumped on it because they were hard to get at the time. I'm a long-time mac user, I used to do more creative work, but now this is more for general productivity and office work. I don't use it as much for media consumption, but it handles that well when called upon. The 5k resolution is native to macOS, and to my knowledge, there isn't another display that renders MacOS this way. so everything is sharp and bright, pleasing to the eye. WIll work very well for creative work (photography in my case) and for productivity (MS Office and other 'desk job' type of work). Build quality: this is as good as it gets. I have a cinema display from 2004 and a thunderbolt from 2011, both of which still work and still look great despite their age. both are still usable today, and I have little doubt this screen can last me that long as well. I also have 2 LG 4k monitors and an ultrawide so I have other options to make up for where this monitor lacks like for gaming or needing to hook up a windows machine, etc. this basically completes my home setup and compliments my MBP perfectly. I know it's costly but it's an underrated device when you consider who it's made for. I am the right user for this based on my use cases, but that may not be true for everyone. If you have your eye on it and you like it, it will not disappoint you, and I would recommend making the purchase if you are a late-model mac user.
Not going to lie -- the price point for this display was a VERY difficult pill to swallow, and I previously had no intention of purchasing it. The lack of features on this particular model (height adjustment, screen rotation, the thicker-than-preferred-in-2022 bezels was almost enough to deter me away initially. However, I've worked in the tech industry for years and I also do a lot of photography & video work, but truthfully have never spent more than $400 on a quality monitor. I've specifically targeted and purchased monitors that meet the specs I need for editing, and I CANNOT tell you exactly how many monitors I've gone through over even over the last 5 years, but it's maybe close to 2 per year. I've purchased the 28" & 32" versions of Sony's 4K monitors from Best Buy as well -- attempted to calibrate them, but the color just would not stick... Anyway, my birthday was the following day & Best Buy had one in stock -- so I bit the bullet and made this purchase. I had slight buyer's remorse for the first week, but it quickly faded. The display fits perfectly next to my iMac and seriously ties the aesthetic together in my office compared to having a monitor of a different brand, primarily being housed in black plastic, inconvenient controls, unmatching color profiles, having to manually adjust the monitor settings separately, etc... If you decide to get one, you'll probably laugh at the ginormous, clever yet simple, and protective packaging that this thing comes in. But I think that you'll love the quality and aesthetic of this thing. It was weirdly relieving having a monitor where I'm able to control the monitor settings via my Macs -- and more especially, having matching color profiles where both my iMac (or even my MacBook Pro M1Pro) and Studio Display have 100% matching colors on screen which speeds up my workflows. Not sure why people are complaining about the camera (I suppose it could be better this day in age, but image quality is great with the lighting I have in my office, and with Apple's Center Stage - people surprisingly trip out and give positive comments while I'm in Zoom meetings. Sound quality is fantastic and pairs very well with the homepods in the room. I ended up giving away the iMac to someone who needed a computer for college, so I now use the display solely with my MacBook Pro -- and having the USB-C/Thunderbolt4 ports comes in clutch by having the display also be a hub. Oh -- need I say that you literally just need the one Thunderbolt cable connected to the MacBook to connect the display, power the MacBook, as well as having access to whatever USB-C peripherals (I have 3 SSDs connected) you want connected. Almost forgot -- controllable Night Shift mode and even screen brightness via your Mac/keyboard -- YUUUSSSSSS!!! This display is NOT for everyone and is obviously not a necessity. However, it's a beautiful monitor that you can tell will last for well over 5+ years of monitor swapping -- so in that sense, it is worth the investment, at least for me. Lastly, if you're going to drop this amount of money on this display, just get some reassurance and get Apple Care. I purchased the $50 annual plan since it'll last until you decide to cancel it and is worth having for something like this.
I’ve been searching for a 4K monitor for my new 16-inch Macbook Pro M1 Pro, which I use for productivity and photo editing. Because of the price, I placed the Studio Display at the bottom of the list as a last resort and owning the Pro XDR display was inconceivable. Just like everyone, I’ve watched Youtube reviews of numerous monitors. I’ve tried a few, but eventually ended up returning them. I just could not find one with the best color accuracy, text clarity, and build quality. After much frustration, I bit the bullet and nervously picked up the Studio Display yesterday. I was lucky to find a standard version in stock at the nearest Best Buy. I was lucky to find a standard version in stock at the nearest Best Buy. After 24-hours of working with this monitor, I am very impressed how sharp, clear, and bright every text and photos are presented. For what I do, this is the monitor that I’ve been searching for. The aluminum construction is topnotch and did not jiggle when the desk is accidentally bumped. Because of the Apple “eco system,” it simply just worked straight out of the box with the use of one thunderbolt cable. No power button. It also worked with my 2018 iPad Pro without any hiccups. The non-adjustable height is not a big deal to me as I ordered a monitor riser to set this on to. Although a 32-inch monitor would’ve been nice, the 27-inch is just right. I only wish that the finish also came in space gray to match the finish of my Macbook. The built-in 12 megapixel camera is lackluster at this time, but word is that Apple is working on a software update to address the issue. I know the Studio Display is not for everyone, but it is for me from a productivity stand point.
Coming from a late 2015 5K iMac, I basically knew what to expect from the Apple Studio Display. It looks good, has excellent color accuracy for my photo and video needs, has excellent build quality, and with my Macbook Pro it is basically plug and play. Perfect operation for the past few weeks with the MBP. I also have a mid-range gaming PC with a GC Titan Ridge PCI-E Thunderbolt card installed (intended for use with this monitor), and it works with webcam, speakers, and microphone, but only from a fresh boot. The Apple Studio Display will only pick up the Windows PC from fresh boot or waking from sleep. When waking from sleep, the Apple Studio Display loses the peripheral functions, despite booting with the speakers and webcam. I am 90% an Apple user, so I can deal with these minor inconveniences, as the PC will only get occasional, recreational use. The inability of this monitor to function properly with any Thunderbolt input is extremely frustrating, and pretty typical of the Apple design paradigm. Apple needs to update the firmware on this thing to make it easier to use with any Thunderbolt / USB-C display compatible device.
