I don’t want to ever live without this watch. I love tracking my sleep with the AutoSleep app, and having an instant reading of my heart rate. I love the notifications that are sent so I don’t have to always have my phone in my hand. My favorite feature is being able to stream music or a podcast to my Apple AirPods and not needing to have my phone near. The cellular plan is a must for me!

It might be an old model now, but the Apple Watch Series 5 is still a mighty contender in the convoluted world of wearables. When it launched in September 2019, it boasted some fresh – yet quite unusual – features, such as hearing health tracking and a, er, compass. While the latter was more of a gimmick, most of the health features in the Series 5 are super useful, including an emergency calling function that works with fall detection. If enabled, the Apple Watch automatically places an emergency call if it senses the user has taken a hard fall and remains motionless for about a minute.

As a full time working mom of 3 - efficiency and accessibility are my two favorite things. I love that this watch keeps me connected but offers health tracking, app use-age, wears well and never dies during the day. I’ve had mine since 2019 without issue. My only con is that I prefer non Apple Watch wands - the silicone ones that come with the watch cause skin issues for me.

The Apple Series 5 GPS watch has many glowing reviews but, sadly, mine is not among them. I am taking the time to write this review in the hope that Apple will fix the issues that appear to impact some iPhone users more than others. More specifically, I caution those with Apple SE iPhones that the compatibility would appear to be marginal. That’s not my opinion but the result of having purchased not one but two watches. The first Series 5 GPS watch was returned on Apple’s own recommendation after it failed to remain properly connected to the phone. Resetting the watch, the phone, the network connection and re-pairing did not resolve the issues with either watch. The watch seemingly loses the connection to the phone even when they’re in the same room with full-strength Bluetooth and WiFi connections. As a result, Siri is unreliable — as judged by the fact that Siri prefaces every response with “Uh oh. I’ve lost the network connection”. (The connection is eventually successful but it gets very old, very fast hearing Siri stutter and cut out on account of the connectivity glitches.) For the same reason, placing calls on the watch is mostly unsuccessful. Even when the watch and the phone are side-by-side, it is not possible to reliably answer incoming calls, either, because the watch will ring but the answer button (phone handset icon) always appear on the screen. In summary, thirst watch was thought to be defective per Apple support, but the second is no better. This would seem to suggest that the phone, itself, is the variable that the Series 5 watch does not “like” (although for all other purposes I have had no issues whatsoever with the iPhone SE). After a lot of troubleshooting and online research, I suspect compatibility of the Series 5 watch with the iPhone SE is only marginal. This is terribly disappointing because I didn’t buy it for the fitness tracking but the safety factor. Back in the fall I tripped in my yard while home alone and sufferred a concussion. While recovering, I heard about the “fall detection” feature on the Apple watch. I thought it would be useful to have “fall detection” since I live on a large, hilly rural property. Unfortunately, 911 call functionality is entirely dependent upon being able to maintain a bluetooth connection to one’s phone (which should, in turn, allow for a 35’ range from one’s phone). In my experience with not one but two of these Series 5 GPS watches, the Bluetooth connection and/or WiFi drops out, making for a low success rate even when the phone and the watch are merely inches apart. Until Apple fixes this watch-SE compatibility issue, my advice for SE owners is to steer clear. But all the other models can go for them.

Great product
29 January 2020

First off, this is a very expensive item that’s an accessory and debatable whether or not you need it for the small convenience it provides. With that being said, it’s a very well made product, works as you would expect from any Apple product. I’ve found it convenient to have messages and calls on my wrist without needing to take my phone out of my pocket. I also spend less time on my phone since it’s not in my hands. One feature I found helpful that I didn’t know the watch had is the ability to take a picture from your phone but clicking the button to take the picture from your watch. This seems like something I’ll end up using more than I would’ve imagined because now you can set your phone up and back up to take a picture rather than holding it as far from your ... MoreFirst off, this is a very expensive item that’s an accessory and debatable whether or not you need it for the small convenience it provides. One feature I found helpful that I didn’t know the watch had is the ability to take a picture from your phone but clicking the button to take the picture from your watch. This seems like something I’ll end up using more than I would’ve imagined because now you can set your phone up and back up to take a picture rather than holding it as far from your face or body as possible. It’s also very convenient to reply to text messages by using the voice to text feature right on the watch and hitting send. Not having to take your phone out and hold it makes responding while driving or just keeping your hands free is nice. I also have an August home door lock which unlocks from my phone anywhere I have internet and there’s a watch app for this. It’s nice having this on my wrist as well. I’m still learning about it and there’s some great features and conveniences and a lot I’ll never use. If I didn’t like the message and calls and the ability to have LTE to it I’d say go with the WiFi only, but the cellular connection is where I find myself realizing the biggest benefits. I also went with the stainless steel over the aluminum because of the durability. If you have Apple care you can turn it in on a claim, but you only get 2 in 2 years so you have to keep that in mind. But to keep the price down I wouldn’t have too much of an issue getting the aluminum and just getting a case for it. I like that it can go in the water so if you’re swimming, in the ocean, or even in the shower you’ll always have access to your phone and messages. You also get free international emergency calling called SOS in 135. That could be a lifesaver if you ever needed it. If the money isn’t an issue then give it a shot. If it’s a stretch to buy it, this definitely isn’t a necessity like your actual cell phone is these days.

Great upgrade from Series 2
4 December 2020

A much needed upgrade from the Series 2 Apple Watch. Just about everything is much faster, if not instant. Siri is the one exception - faster, but still pokey! I was really hoping the new Series 5 could get my smart lights to turn on via Siri before I made it to the particular room, but you're still at the mercy of Siri passing the command to your phone from the watch. If it's not on your person, that might take a while.Otherwise, it's an excellent product. That's my one and only complaint! The OLED display is wonderful, and actually slightly easier to read/parse at a glance compared to my larger 42mm Series 2. The Always On Display is a game changer (even though I fully expected to disable it,) but it does chew through the battery - maybe an extra 4-5% per hour. ... MoreA much needed upgrade from the Series 2 Apple Watch. Depending on your personal battery philosophy, you can take it or leave it.The stainless steel of the case and the band is beautiful, but don't sleep on the new Graphite color if you're interested in a stainless steel model!

More than what was expected
16 November 2021

Never disappointed with Apple products. The Apple Watch has the same great quality engineering and software as my Ipad and iphone. It integrates with both to share data and sync applications. The health and activity data is awesome. Far more information than my fitbit ever provided. Its great having multiple clock faces that provide different functions just a swipe away. Customize from the hundreds available or make your own using 3rd party applications. Definitally get the cellular option so you can stay connected even when away from your phone.

This SERIES “5”’LOOKS GREAT, feels as good as my SERIES 1. Now, onto why I’m dissatisfied... and understand that I UPGRADED from a series 1 for THREE SPECIFIC reasons. First off I’m an older ELECTRONICS GUY retired. Lots of Apple toys along with others DEVICES. HAPPY with almost all my Apple stuff! So, THIS SERIES 5 was purchased for the EKG, COMPASS, and GPS. The best Apple Watch!
6 March 2021

Love! Love! Love! I have wanted an Apple Watch for a few years now, I had purchased my mom the 3 series in stainless steel when it first came out and really loved hers, but the silver finish wasn’t really me. When I saw this 5 series, in space grey stainless, I knew I had to have it!! I was able to get it for a great price, and it is definitely worth it to get the stainless over the aluminum face! This watch also comes with the magnetic mesh loop band, so there is no need to purchase a separate band; this one is so beautiful, is easy to take on and off, cleans easily and looks great with both casual and fancier attire! If that weren’t enough, the special watch face that comes on the 5 series is Animoji’s, which sounds cute, but when you see the things they do...I ... MoreLove! Love! Love!
