Arai did the only thing possible to this groundbreaking, critically acclaimed street and dirt crossover helmet. The new XD4 has Arai's intermediate oval interior shape, along with new top-diffuser-vent ports which nearly double the XD4's airflow, while its new shell shape provides better aerodynamic stability at higher street speeds in concert with its high-flow peak and new side cowl vents. These larger, sculpted vents improve ventilation efficiency as well as helmet stability on your head at speed. Also featuring a new chin vent which has more intake ports for improved airflow. And like its predecessor, the vent's chin bar is rounded with less protrusion making it less likely to catch and dig in during a spill, than most other designs. Its oval form is actually based on the egg's, long known for its extremely strong and efficient shape. Arai's amazing new patent-pending FCS (Facial Contour Support) cheek pad design delivers comfort, support and fit like nothing you've ever felt, and it features our exclusive 5 mm peel-away custom fit layer. Arai has also added our trademark brow vents to the new XD4 face shield, providing airflow to the temple area of the head. The XD-4 also includes Arai's patented Dry-Cool technology to keep you drier and cooler (hence the name) for greater long-haul comfort. The XD-4 debuts the Emergency Release Cheek Pad Release System. From Arai's decades long commitment to building helmets that do more for riders comes this major innovation, the very first emergency release cheek pad design created specifically for motorcycle helmets. Developed to allow easier access to an injured rider, the XD4's cheek pads slide out easily via the integrated pull-tabs built into the underside of the cheek pad, making helmet removal much easier for trained medical personnel. FEATURES New exhaust ports added to the top diffuser vents nearly double the airflow while using the same (4) 10mm vent holes in the helmet shell. The ability to increase performance from existing designs is typical of Arais evolutionary thinking. Got as a replacement for aging rf1200. As soon as I put it on I was like ahhhh. Drove to work and it was super quiet on the highway. Seems to get more respect form other drivers because of the off road rebel look but maybe that's just me. Wish it came with a pin lock to keep the nose fog out but that's about it. At first I wanted to find a transition lens but instead I got some non-polarized wrap around shades and ride with the visor up in traffic and the wind feels good. I may be slow on my KLR but now at least I'm comfy and stylish. Hopefully will get 5 or 6 years out of it and that will make the price tag worth it. I might get the Bell version for putting around on the trails so that I won't worry about smashing this beauty.

Fair-weather Helmet--useless in the rain

Every good thing the manufacturer and reviewers say about this helmet is true. The problem is the stuff that's left out. This is a great helmet if you ride in places where it's always over 65 degrees and never rains, but if it's cool and rainy, the helmet is utterly useless. I debated for a long time between this and the Shoei Hornet X2. My local dealer had an event with an Arai factory rep and he impressed me with the company's commitment to craftsmanship, etc. Plus, the Shoei is significantly heavier than the Arai. My biggest concern was that there is no pinlock available for the Arai, but the factory rep assured me that Arai's "fog resistant" visor would work just as well (for another $79, of course)..I just tried riding in 50 degrees and rain for the first ... MoreEvery good thing the manufacturer and reviewers say about this helmet is true. My biggest concern was that there is no pinlock available for the Arai, but the factory rep assured me that Arai's "fog resistant" visor would work just as well (for another $79, of course)..I just tried riding in 50 degrees and rain for the first time since I bought the helmet. The "anti-fog" coating seemed to attract more condensation and moisture than the standard visor, and the exterior of the visor turns raindrops into impenetrable smears Within seconds of putting the shield down, I was unable to see well enough to ride, my only option being to lift the visor, take the raindrops in the face, and squint through my prescription glasses as they were covered with raindrops (at least they don't smear the same way the Arai visor does).I tried applying some muc-off anti-fog spary to the inside of the visor, which involves taking it off, and here ran into another totally inexcusable "feature" of the Arai. I get that Arai believes their old-school screw-in visor mounting is safer than the more modern systems that somewhat compromise the integrity of the shell and creat a thinner area in the EPS, but seriously, Arai? You couldn't have built in at least a little channel or groove or something to help line up the holes in the in the peak and visor to make it less of a pain and to help avoid cross-threading the plastic screws? I get that the screws are hollow plastic so they will easily break away in the event of a crash, but with just a little more thought and engineering, you could keep the safety features but make it just a little easier to swap visors. The muc-off spray worked for about ten minutes before the inside of the visor was again coated with a heavy mist. No combination of opening/closing the various vents on the helmet seemed to help. If they're closed, my breath fogged the visor. If they're open, the moist air coming through the vents fogged the visor. If you're just going out to ride on the street and in the dirt on a nice day, this is a great helmet, light, comfortable, and well-ventilated. But if you plan to take it out on a real, multi-day adventure tour where you just might run into some inclement weather along the way, this helmet is not suitable.Very disappointing, considering the cost. I've spent big bucks on all my gear to ensure that I can still enjoy riding even when it gets cool and wet out there, but with the poor design of the Arai XD-4's visor, it's all for naught. If I take a multi-day, multi-state tour anywhere but the desert southwest, I'll have to revert to my sub-$300 HJC helmet to ensure that I'm not grounded when it rains.

Great feeling helmet, and great colorway.

Like most looking into a proper ADV helmet you're often met with three options on the higher end. The Arai XD4, Shoei Hornet 2, and Klim Krios.I was torn between the Shoei and the Arai, but after trying on the Arai in a Cycle Gear I felt how comfy the helmet was. That plus hours of comparison videos and I went with the Arai. Its an extremely comfortable helmet and you can adjust the padding on the inside to get a perfect fit. The Hi-viz color is neat cause it has black accents that contrast well with the yellow. Note the color in person is much more of that highlighter color than the product pictures show, but I love it. Still waiting for my bike to arrive so I can't comment on the noise levels or air flow beyond what I can visually see.It was very comfortable in my 30 minute fit test. Tight getting into the helmet, but I have a big head and expect that. Once on the pads feel secure but plush, and this helmet is AMAZING for glasses! The vents all have a very positive click so there's no mistaking that you've opened/closed them. The visor vents are just finicky enough I won't be trying to work them while in motion, but they have their own channels that look like they'll be great for keeping cool. Wish it came with a pinlock at this price.I dig the look and went with the Depart graphic in white/blue hoping for some visibility to other vehicles. More of an orange, but I'm happy with it. Matches my truck.

So you wanna adventure, eh?This is a great helmet, but the design is starting to show it’s age a little - but don’t worry, it’s KLR650 of helmets (if it’s not broken, don’t fix it). This helmet fits me much better and alleviated a pressure point I had with my Shoei Hornet X2.That being said, the Shoei comes with some niceties in the box that include a pin lock insert for your visor (anti fog insert), chin skirt, and optional breath box. I find the Arai to be louder and “breezier” than the Hornet as well, but if you wear ear pro then it’s not too bad (and I’m sure an optional chin skirt might help).Despite the lack of extra stuff in the box, the Arai is a fantastic helmet. Sure it’s a little louder, but the Arai interior never disappoints for comfort (shares liner with the VX pro 4). There’s a good amount of adjustability in Aria’s cheek pads and liner sizes. The bonus for my medium XD4 is that it shares a shell size with the large - so I get a bit more adjustability for liners (if you’re on the fence between M and L).Drag/pull back from the peak isn’t bad on these helmets at highway speeds. I’d say it’s on par with my Shoei Hornet - minimal effect, but sometimes noticeable. The peak functions well to keep the sun out of your eyes at sunset too, and the underside of the peak comes with a matte black strip to cut down on road glare (nice touch). The ear wells are nice and deep (per the usual Arai cheek pad design) and accommodate blue tooth comms speakers more easily than the Shoei Hornet. The helmet is slightly lighter too than the Shoei.Swapping a shield out isn’t as easy, and this is where the Shoei Hornet shines - with spring loaded clips to facilitate the easy swapping of shields. The Arai uses a plastic screw system instead, and while totally fine, it’s just a bit clunkier and an older design. If you’re stuck between these two helmets, either one is a great choice - just depends on comfort and fit ultimately. The Shoei has a little bit of an advantage with its newer design, but the Arai is a well made and trusted classic.I hope this helps!

Lightweight, Loud, Needs a Pinlock, Overpriced
6 May 2022

I have had this helmet for 4 years and put about 80k miles on my bikes all year round for that entire time. Overall, I am not that impressed with the helmet for the price, but there are aspects that I like about it.I learned very fast that this helmet, stock, is atrocious in cold wet weather. Mothers Day 2018, one of the most miserable street rides I have ever done because of this helmet. Riding back from NH to PA in 38 degrees rain/sleet and the stock visor was nothing but fog.I bought the pinlock visor and insert, which doesn't fit very well because of the aggressive curve of the visor. The pinlock was definitely an improvement, but not perfect. The lower portion of my visor will still fog up in the wet cold, but I can see out of the top. The pinlock was definitely an improvement, but not perfect. The lower portion of my visor will still fog up in the wet cold, but I can see out of the top. I was very disappointed it did not come with the $650 helmet. The top vent buttons both broke, after 3 years. They began to flutter in the wind, which was driving me a little crazy on the saddle, so I taped them down in the closed position. The helmet padding is not that comfortable, compared to my Shoei RF1100. I miss that comfort; however, I will definitely say the XD4 is significantly lighter than my RF1100, which I do like a lot.The XD4 is a very loud helmet. It makes hearing my Bluetooth difficult, while riding. I can't take calls at highway speed because the helmet is so loud. I always used to wear ear plugs on long rides, but now I wear ear plugs all the time on the street because the wind noise is deafening. For reference, I could listen to the same Bluetooth with music or calls in my RF1100 was with ear plugs at highway speed on the same bike. After 4 years, the visor hinge is beginning to fall apart. I did not have that happen on my RF1100.Air flow is okay. As long as I am wearing my ear plugs and the weather cooperates, I tend to ride with the visor up and sunglasses in the hot summer months for the air flow. I didn't always do that and I have gotten a lot of bugs and occasional small rocks to the face with the visor up, so I don't recommend doing that.Visor changes on the XD4 aren't that quick and easy with the 4 plastic screws. I do have a tinted visor, but it's too much of a hassle to stop riding and change it. I started wearing my sunglasses instead with the pinlock visor all the time. The peak is great. This was my first helmet with a peak and I don't think I can go back. That being said, I will not be buying another XD4. Next lid is going to be...you guessed it...the Shoei Hornet X2.

Like it Plenty

Fit and quality of this helmet is satisfying. I rotate between an Arai XD-4 and Klim Krios Pro. The Arai has better aerodynamics in buffeting winds, but it's heavier than the Klim. The Arai has better and more venting options, they are both comfortable, the Klim is quieter and the helmet that I reach for when GoPro-ing with a mic inside the helmet.Pinlock's on the Klim are a bit blurry and distorted, Arai's anti-fog shield has better clarity but the inside is delicate and must be treated with care, for example: When fog on the inside of the shield freezes in cold weather, don't wipe it! Abrasive ice crystals will ruin the film on the inner shield. The Klim and Arai perform about the same at suppressing fog, which is often enough indifferent

OK helmet, but needs a design update
19 March 2023

I purchased this helmet because I trust that Arai makes excellent, safe helmets. I still think it's likely a helmet with good protection, though I wouldn't purchase it again. On the positive side, it's very, very comfortable and replacement cheek pads are relatively inexpensive. Also, Arai has, in my opinion, the best liner system. The removable cheek pads have a cover that comes off, which is great for washing and dries more quickly than a cheek pad where there's a cover and cushion sewn in. The foam on the cheek pad is designed with layers so you can remove thin layers to get the perfect fit. Very smart. Also on the positive side, the ventilation for the chin and front of face is very good. The top-of-head ventilation kind of just pinpoints two areas of the head ... MoreI purchased this helmet because I trust that Arai makes excellent, safe helmets. Overpriced and Aggravating
25 February 2023

This is a very comfortable and well-made helmet as one would expect for $650. But it's not significantly more so than my Scorpion Exo R2000 Ravin, which I absolutely loved and which I still prefer in terms of fit. It's also not significantly quieter or noticeably lighter. It also has slightly less field of vision than the Sorpion. I only replaced the Scorpion due to an altercation with a Nissan Frontier. Since my helmet was no longer available I had the other party's insurance company buy me a "premium" helmet. I should have just gone with another Scorpion. In addition to being overpriced the Arai has less length to both sides of the helmet strap, which makes it extremely difficult to synch the free end through the double loops and then try to find the snap buried ... MoreThis is a very comfortable and well-made helmet as one would expect for $650. It's difficult at best, nearly impossibly to do with my jacket on and let's not even entertain the thought of trying it with gloves. Because of that, my routine has changed from jacket, helmet, gloves to helmet, jacket, gloves?and don't get me started on gas stops. Now let's talk com systems. I have a Cardo Packtalk Slim system that I've installed in three different helmets with no issues but cannot for the life of me figure out how to install in the Arai. If there's a tutorial out there PLEASE clue me in, because I'm actually facing the alternative of having to buy a completely new com system. Could this be the insurance company getting the last laugh? At any rate, three stars may be generous.

Post mortem review!
30 September 2023

Don't worry, only the helmet is dead. I crashed hard last summer somewhere between Vernon and Merritt B.C. When I say somewhere I mean we were off track and in a hurry to get more lost!So of course I caught an edge in the abandoned two track and went down hard. After a long dry summer the ground was like concrete. My left hip hit first, then my shoulder and finally my Arai XD encased noggin. My head hit hard with the increased velocity from the whiplash after everything eles had hit the ground and... when it did, before I went semi unconscious, I could actually hear the styrofoam crushing! So yes all the bells and whistles are great. The D rings don't bother me and the flat screen is neutral. But this helmet get 5 outa 5 for doing it's real job!
