Absolutely not worth the money.Purchased an Alpha SV in 2020.Average seasonal wear with regular care using Arc’teryx products and following their instructions.Had a hood adjustment button become unglued, so brought it in for repairs. After assessment by their team they listed off a number of unrelated “issues” that made it impossible to repair— such things as minor oil stain (probably from sweat) in the collar, signs of contamination (again also probably from sweat) in an armpit etc. They informed me the jacket was essentially beyond repair and garbage.Their resolution was to offer me a measly 20% credit towards a new jacket, while also telling me that they would either destroy or repurpose my jacket for their ReBird products. For a “Top of the Line” severe ... MoreAbsolutely not worth the money.Purchased an Alpha SV in 2020.Average seasonal wear with regular care using Arc’teryx products and following their instructions.Had a hood adjustment button become unglued, so brought it in for repairs. I bought the Alpha SV jacket a few years ago and have worn it from time to time in suitable weather (heavy rain and winter hikes in Europe and Asia). However, never in extreme or harsh environmental conditions. During this time, the jacket served me well. Back in Germany, I cleaned it and found that many of the welded/glued seams had come loose, making the jacket unusable. The jacket was sent for repair via service request. According to service, repair is not possible. Instead, my jacket was offered for recycling in exchange for a 20% promotional code. Due to the bad experience, I found it difficult to choose a similar product from Arc'teryx again. For a high-priced jacket like this, I would have expected a product that is more sustainable and ease of repair.
The front main zipper leaks to the point that after an hour in the rain I have an inch and a half wide wet strip down the center of my chest. I have had the zipper replaced by Arcteryx (after arguing with support about it) only to immediately have the same problem. The pocket zippers which are different and covered do not seem to leak, it's simply a horrible design. This supposed to be the most robust jacket in the line and it can't even stand up to an hour of moderate rain and is not a functional jacket. I'm now stuck with a rain jacket that doesn't keep you dry and can't be trusted in the backcountry.I won't get into the support experience because that was another disaster but I am now being told that I am on my own. Another favourite of support is to say that "no zipper is waterproof", as if there is no difference between waterproof and being soaked to the skin through three layers. Bottom line is that I was sold that doesn't perform its function and is basically useless to me.
Unphased by torrential severe thunderstorms, hail, and howling winds, this jacket performs as promised. No complaints, only compliments. The undoubted strengths of this jacket are its impenetrability to wind and precipitation, adjustability/function, and the hood design. As promised, the jacket is both windproof and waterproof yet somehow extremely lightweight and durable. I was caught out in severe thunderstorms with lots of hail, wind, and rain--multiple times--with this jacket, and it performed as expected.I especially like the hood and collar design of this jacket. The hood has the perfect design at, and over, the brim, where the combination of the hood and a hat or helmet keeps precipitation completely out of your face. The hood has the perfect design at, and over, the brim, where the combination of the hood and a hat or helmet keeps precipitation completely out of your face. The hood is extremely well thought out to every last detail: the cut, cinch pulls, size, and adjustability. And, the high collar covers your neck and face for additional, great protection. After surviving multiple thunderstorms on the trail, I wondered how waterproof this jacket really was. So, I put it to the test--a five minute shower. I can say it passed the shower test with flying colors. Only a very small amount of water penetrated the lower portion or the front zip but everything else was bone dry. Investigating further, Arc'teryx does state that the front zip is "WaterTight" ("highly water resistant, but not waterproof"), so I believe the front zip performs as claimed. However, the jacket was completely waterproof in the field, and I believe it would perform just as well under colder, more severe conditions (i.e., snow and ice). This is, quite simply, the best windproof/waterproof jacket I have ever donned---you cannot go wrong with this jacket, it is reliable, durable, and lightweight.
I've been using the jacket for about 3 weeks now. I've worn it on 7 ski tours and a few light climbs so far.The quality and workmanship are very good! The jacket is comfortable to wear! How well the jacket will hold up over the years remains to be seen, but I hope it will give me years of enjoyment! It's my 4th hardshell jacket so far and I have to say the weight/performance ratio is unbeatable!I took the jacket in size M because my last hardshell jacket was always a bit too short and tight for me (for example when climbing). The jacket therefore offers a lot of space to wear thick down underneath or to wear skins and/or gloves underneath to stow away the jacket. What was important to me personally is that I can move around in the jacket without any restrictions.
I kept it but there are three big missives with this. Firstly, I want to start off that this shell is Arc's statement piece and therefore should showcase state of the art features. It is really not that innovative. It is missing a perforated area at the top of the zip so you can breathe with it being zipped and not fogging your glasses. This feature would be great. Secondly, I wish it had a waist cinch in addition to its thigh cinch. As it is, the cut goes way below your butt (too far) and a way to bring it up is to cinch the waist. This cinch also decreases bulk. Finally, the arms are just comically long, even for a climbing jacket. I think Arc should take a fresh look at this jacket and instead of promoting the innovative fabric, come up with some new innovations ... MoreI kept it but there are three big missives with this. This is THE quintessential 3L Goretex Ice Climbing Hardshell and Arcteryx has perfected it over the years. Some reviews online are calling it overkill, but I don't agree. The cut does a good job not riding up when raising my arms when wearing a harness, the face material is the right balance between being burly and lightweight, and the pockets are in the right places. The two chest pockets are so huge, I think the designers intend them to be where you store gloves and things you want to keep warm as opposed to the inner mesh pockets I'm more used to. The one mesh pocket inside the jacket holds a water bottle well. My only concern is the velcro cuffs icing up when used over the cuff, on my BD hardshell ski jacket I added snaps- you can buy them at the hardware store. ... MoreThis is THE quintessential 3L Goretex Ice Climbing Hardshell and Arcteryx has perfected it over the years. Genuinely the best outdoor Shell jacket ever purchased. This jacket is fully waterproof, warm, fits so well as a outer layer, feel high quality, and it SO stylish. In the three months I have had the Orca colorway, I have gotten countless compliments on the design, fit, and overall look of the jacket, as it looks stylish even on a sunny day! Truly one of my favorite pieces of clothing in my wardrobe. This jacket has never failed to keep me dry, even under the shower for 30 mins for a test, not even a drop wet with nothing underneath. It fits so well with the atom hoody underneath (another top tier purchase), and is the perfect shell. Although it is pricey, if you are going to use it often, it is so worth the price, as it will last you years. I have used this skiing, ... MoreGenuinely the best outdoor Shell jacket ever purchased.
