Arc'teryx Atom SL Vest - Black - S - Men

(54 reviews)

Compact and superlight, the Arc'teryx Atom SL men's sleeveless vest easily stashes in your pack, ready to grab when summer temperatures drop. Worn as a mid layer or standalone, this insulated vest delivers moderate insulation perfect for early morning runs and taking in the view from a freshly bagged peak. Its Tyono 20 fabric balances breathability and wind resistance, and the Coreloft synthetic insulation is light, compressible and efficient, even when wet. Lightweight stretch fleece side panels improve ventilation and hold the fit. Layering is the key of keeping you dry, warm and using your energy efficiently. Put into the right systems, a good sequence of layers moves moisture away from your skin, conserves or dissipates heat and provides you with weather protection. Here they are. The first layer, worn next-to-skin will provide warmth and quickly move moisture away from your skin. Then, the second layer, is the insulation and fleece, that provides warmth while also dissipating heat during periods of high output. And finally, the third layer, the shell, which is the most weather-protective layer, worn on the outside of all other layers.

This vest is an awesome addition to your Arc'tryx collection. I bought mine several years ago, but got the size wrong. Customer service really helped out with getting an exchange in the correct size.I've used it for all kinds of activities from pickle ball to Heli-skiing in Canada. It's the perfect outer layer when wind protection is needed or just a light insulation over a shirt. It's also perfect as an underlayer for cold, wet days in any activity. It's extremely fashionable and versatile. Packs light for when you don't need it and fully functional when you do.

This years model is a bust. Better with a shorter collar but still not right. I have two of the Atom SL vests from several years ago. I wear them year round, and am very active. I actually go outdoors and do not just use these for a trip to the mall. Those SL vests which I own are perfect, absolutely perfect in design, were made in Vietnam. The collars on those are the perfect height 2 inches or 5.08 CM. The side panels have a perfect stretch material that enables a close fit but moves with your body for those of us who are muscular, but between a Medium and Large size generally. Your innovation is frankly terrible on this current piece. 1) Collar still a bit too tall, and lined with a brushed material not necessary or comfortable for this piece 2) Sides not the correct fabric for stretch. Much too tight not much give. I and many reviewers agreed on the above changes that were not useful, and made the prior year's (2-3 seasons ago) great pieces of kit, which were perfect, wonderfully useful into the new version that is unacceptable. I was so delighted to see the collar less high this year, and went to try one on at the local supplier. Medium size (large too long for my body 5'9") It is too tight, the inside of the collar is still a brushed material of some type, yet the chief complaint is once again design team innovation missed the mark with a new material in the side stretch area that has much less give making this vest, new model for 2023, useless to me. Please bring back the original design. The same stretchy side panels, remove the brushed material from the collar and keep it short, 2 inches, or 5.08 centimeters. I use your gear. I hike in the mountains. A number of reviewers share my concerns. You might consider keeping a winner in the inventory, again Atom SL of several years ago. Please address these issues. I have a closet full of your gear but not this new vest. I will cherish the older ones I have. You might take a hint, innovation for the sake of change is not always good. Kindly help us out and bring back the Atom SL vest older version. Many thanks.

The Atom Vest has been a staple of mine for over 12 years and I have purchased at least 3 of them after I have worn them to a nub. When I bought this revised vest I thought I would like the higher collar, but it is too high. It really comes up to my mouth, so only does it look unstylish, but also not functional. I also, am not sure I like to longer length, but I'm also only 5'1", so I'm guessing most people would like this change. All in all, it is still a great vest, but I wish they would find a compromise on the collar length and also the length of the vest. I use to buy XS, but with this new design and revised sizing I had to exchange for an XXS.

Great Base Layer
7 March 2023

I'm on Atom LT vest #2 at this point. My Rat Terrier puppy found the first one delectable, as he was going through his "zipper" phase. Thank God he's moved on to his "remote control" phase. But seriously, I didn't know how important the vest was to me until I found myself without it. Living in Northern CA and working outside during the winter, it's my single most important article of clothing. Paired with the Atom LT jacket, I'm pretty much set for any temp nature throws at me here. UPS took two weeks to get the new vest to me, but no matter. It's here now, and I'm happy again.

Multi-purpose Vest
7 September 2023

I bought this vest for work initially (I’m an ER nurse). I liked how lightweight it was, while still keeping me warm. The updated version also has an inside pocket now, which is where I like to keep my pen, phone, and other small medical gear. The best thing about this vest though is that I can use it for work and leisure - plan to do some travelling in the future, and its perfect for layering. The only downside is the fit. It feels like it was made for a taller slender person. I am neither, but am glad that I can cinch the bottom. It works!

Not Durable
13 April 2022

I purchased this vest approximately 1 year ago. I own many pieces of Arc’teryx clothing as well as numerous jackets.I have never used the vest in an outdoor situation such as hiking or backpacking. It has only been used around town on a daily basis. The vest has worn out significantly across the chest from where the seatbelt makes contact while driving. I contacted Arcteryx online service centre and they claimed that the damage to the vest is not due to a “manufacturing or workmanship issue”. If the vest can not withstand day to day use while driving a vehicle then in my opinion it is a poorly made product. You most definitely would not be able to carry a pack with it. Arcteryx makes high end products that should be able to withstand the elements as well as abuse. I ... MoreI purchased this vest approximately 1 year ago. Perfect for Spring/Summer Golf
21 June 2023

Got the Atom SL Vest in black for Father's Day. Immediately tried it on the golf course on a cloudy spring day (13-18 deg celsius) and moderate wind. In some holes, the sun had shone, in others it was completely cloudy. My buddies wore windbreaker jackets and they kept taking them on and off as they became either too hot or too cold. In my case, the Atom vest kept me just at the right temp. I never (repeat, never!) uncomfortable with it. And what's more is that I sometimes forgot I had it on. Its so lightweight and versatile. Amazing vest for cool golfing days, spring and fall, and maybe on some cool summer days. P.S. Order a size up if you are not slender. I typically wear a medium with most vests, but went with Large with the Atom SL, and its a perfect fit for me. ... MoreGot the Atom SL Vest in black for Father's Day. Very Nice Vest!
13 November 2022

I have worn a number things from the Arc’teryx Atom series. The jackets are nice, but the Atom formula makes for an even better vest. This vest does exactly what I want from a vest. It’s warm without being bulky, and it fits snugly without hindering movement. Add the drop down hem at the back and what you have here is the perfect vest, or as perfect as I need it. I don’t expect it will prove extremely durable but then I use it almost exclusively for layering, and it does that without adding bulk, nor hindering movement. I can’t promise this for everyone, but it fits me like a glove. I’m not overweight, but I am over 60, and while I may be somewhat athletic for my age, I have some of the usual adult bulges.A lot of outdoor clothing companies have been gradually ... MoreI have worn a number things from the Arc’teryx Atom series. I have tried a number of them. Some of the jackets can be nearly as constrictive as the over-filled down jackets are. Yet so far this formula seems to work best in vest form, especially the hybrid ones with elastic panels on the side. The ones I’ve tried seem pretty good, but the Arc’teryx Atom version is exceptional. And I particularly like the drop down hem in back. Nice vest!

What happened?
15 September 2023

I’ve had two other iterations of this vest from years past but lost mine and snagged a new one this season. I was super confused when I tried it on. Not only is it way less soft than the old one- almost a plasticky, crinkly feel- but it is HUGE. I double checked the tags to make sure I’d gotten a women’s because it was such a noticeable difference. Not only that but it’s a solid 2” longer than the old one so it’s almost a tunic on my 5’3” frame instead of hip length. I bought it on prodeal and am super kicking myself as I can’t return it.

Long-time fan of the brand. Everything they've done historically has been perfect or near perfect. Ethos of minimalism pervades everything they do, materials spot on, technical functionality exceptional, etc. However, some of the recent moves run counter to the brand's historical consistency. The Atom vests and jackets embody that disappointing change. On the vest, the collar is now MUCH taller than it used to be, probably by a factor of 2x. Its length in the past was perfect and ran ~half-way up my neck, now it rubs against by jaw and face constantly. How does this improve design? Its length in the past was perfect and ran ~half-way up my neck, now it rubs against by jaw and face constantly. How does this improve design? How is this minimalistic?Further, what historically doubled as an excellent base layer for outdoor activity whose beauty made it cross-functional to wear at the office on a daily basis, now simply looks goofy at work with the extended, excessive height of the collar.Worse, the collar now has a ridiculous lining on the inside of it. How is that minimalist? Again, how is that minimalist in design ethos? The beauty of Arcteryx was that the materials have been so nice historically, including the old collar on this vest, that gimmicky things like liners haven't really been needed. I expect design garbage like this from Patagonia, now These guys. The liner adds ZERO incremental design value or functionality to this jacket. Ax it immediately.A second change is the width of the side vents on the vest, which are significantly bigger than they used to be. The width now resembles the width of the vents on the Atom jackets. There was absolutely no need to widen the vents on the vest and because the vest lacks the additional sleeve and hood features found on the jacket, its vents look ridiculously too big in the context of its sleek profile. Go back to the previous design.Lastly, and this probably angers me off the most although it is purely vanity and aesthetic (but the aesthetic of this brand along with its functionality is what has always set it apart from the pack), they are now STITCHING the logo on the jacket rather than using that beautiful, high glare print/stamp they've always used. Perhaps the thought is the print would wear off over time and with enough washes, but that has NEVER remotely been the case or a risk with products that I've owned, despite heavy use. The stitched logo is ugly, dull and has absolutely zero aesthetic beauty or appeal too it. Revert to the print logo and improve the aesthetic to where it once was.Anyhow, I've grown so accustomed to loving Arcteryx right out of the box that I don't even try on or look at the jackets I buy before I wash and begin to use. I made that mistake with this vest and an Atom jacket I bought last week and of course found out how disappointed I was with the design changes after they'd already been washed. No recourse to return now, so stuck with these poor excuses for awesome previous designs.Arcteryx was that rare brand that despite having basically kissed the ceiling of perfection in design and functionality, somehow never felt compelled to alter the alchemy that helped them achieve that perfection, knowing all too well that even the most minor changes to minimalist design could destroy the whole thing top to bottom. I can't say they are exercising the same restraint anymore. Activity in design for activity's sake seems to be the ethos now.
