What can I say, it's an Arcteryx. The new lines make the 2023 Sabre jacket look real clean. It's a heavy (burly) shell, the 3layer with the flannel backer make it a tad heavy for temps above 35 - 40 degrees. This jacket was made for the cold windy harsh New England weather, matched with the proper midlayer and you'll feel impervious to any conditions including the extreme. I like the fit, no restrictions to my movement no matter the mid layer I wear. I purchased the Blue Tetra, the color has a little pop to it which suits me well. I also purchased the 2023 Sabre pants (black). Like most of my Arcteryx gear they can lock in with the powder skirt for those powdery day's.

After narrowing down my search for a new ski jacket, I settled on the Sabre, considering the Beta AR, Rush, and Sabre SV. The deciding factors were the powderskirt and fleece liner for added warmth. With a height of 5'10 and weight of 160, I opted for a large, achieving a slightly oversized fit that I'm happy with. I'd give it 4.5 stars if possible. My only complaint lies with the waist hem adjustments—the plastic locks, while functional, they tend to loosen with pulling, feeling less sturdy. Also, the color options are disappointing! I almost chose a women's Sentinel jacket in Boxcar/Pytheas option, but they lacked the right size for me. (The women's large fits like a men's medium and was too tight in the chest.)

I bought this jacket last week and used it on a snowboard trip to Breckenridge during a winter storm with temps in the low teens and negative windchill. It was dumping all weekend. I paired this jacket with the Rush bibs and hit the slopes all weekend long. I stayed warm and comfortable despite the weather. All I had was a Rho LT zip and light fleece underneath. Last season I wore a Black Diamond jacket and bibs and Burton AK the year before. This jacket and pairing beats them all. It is a little roomier than some of Arcteyx’s climbing/mountaineering jackets so stick to your normal size or size down for a more snug fit.

This is great for skiing although it’s better at colder temps because it’s so warm. It’s burly as hell and the fleece backer makes it extra comfortable.It’s not crinkly sounding at all like the goretex pro. I’d imagine that this is just as durable as gore pro but def less breathable due to the backer. If it’s warmer than 20F I wear softshell otherwise I’d sweat too much since I’m an aggressive skier.So if you run cold or ride in the cold this jacket is perfect. It’s on the heavy size but you won’t notice going down the hill. The hood is great for helmet compatibility as well.The arm cuffs are good but they could be a bit larger. I got this jacket after already loving this brand for the quality and designs of the products. My shell I've used for over 10 years that was issued to me while in the service finally started to fall apart from the inside causing me to need a replacement. Deciding on what to replace with was difficult, but decided on this sabre jacket. I love the design, features, and quality of the product. Only found 1 flaw, and that was the length of the sleeves. while the chest, shoulders, and upper arm fit perfectly. Then legnth of the sleeves were a bit excessive. I know being 5'7, I am not tall, but having a huge amount of excess made it a bit uncomfortable with gloves on.
I bought this last season.. Took it skiing 5 times.. Got snagged on a tree and it ripped.. I see two other reviews talking about how easily this jacket rips... That is bad enough, but I was told by service that because it was not manufacturer's defect they would not fix it, and referred me to external vendor to make repair. I complained that this was a 2 month old $750 jacket and they should repair, even if they charge me for repair.. They allowed me to send it in for evaluation and again advised they would not repair. After more complaining, they agreed to fix it and patched it with a non-matching panel.This jacket is well designed, but the frequent complaints of rips without significant mechanism suggest a materials or construction issue. I ended up going with the medium because the local Vancouver mountains don't get cold enough to need heavy midlayers (inner lining microfleece helps with insulation). This jacket is the highest quality piece I have from Arc'teryx, the outer fabric feels soft to the touch and not crinkly/plastic feeling like most rain/ski jackets. The jacket is slim enough fitting in the medium to wear around town and not look like you are wearing a ski specific jacket. I do wish the snow skirt was removable, however it does not compromise when not in use. This seems to be the end of the Arc'teryx athletic fit. I am 6'2", 175lbs, and have been wearing Arc'teryx for 15 years because they have always had a nice trim fit with enough room in the shoulders. No more with this revised fit. I always wear a size large, and in this jacket the cut across the back of the shoulders is way too tight. I can't cross my arms without the fabric pulling, and bending over to strap in results in the sleeves riding up and the fabric pulling tight across my shoulder blades. The articulation is also not as good as previous jackets. The sleeves ride way up my arms and the jacket rides up when I raise my hands. 1 star given not for product quality as it was top draw as always with Arcteryx. But the sizing is abysmal. I am a 43” chest so got the large. I’m pretty much a large in all brands anywhere. I’m only 5’7” and except that length will always be slightly longer. But this garment was huge on me. Sleeves were 6” too long. Chest and overall jacket size in all directions was ridiculously big. It’s a shell. I get it designed to accommodate layers and having owned many shells I’m know what is required. My advice size your self down. A medium would have fitted me I suspect. Unfortunately Arcteryx would not allow me to exchange and receive the same discount. My advice to Arcteryx is sort your sizes out and consider a bit more customer service.
I snowboard annually in interior BC for week-long trips. SV has proven to be my preferred material in deep snow. I run a bib for my lower and carry a backpack as well. Sabre probably has the roomiest fit which is important for layering and for mobility. I also like the colourways that are offered; one that's slightly brighter and one that's more subtle. If I'm nit-picking, the only downside is that the jacket is 2-3 inches too long. The zipper allows for opening in both directions so the constriction around the thighs can be mitigated. While I like the "baggy" style, the extra length isn't particularly useful to me. If you can afford this jacket you can probably also afford a bib. For reference, I am 5'5 140lbs, wearing a size small.
