This was a vast improvement over the old one. It controls three cameras with ease and doesn’t loose signal like older one. I recommend powering this through a UPS battery back up. To avoid having to reset cameras when power goes out

Our base station stopped working, thought it might be too old, so picked up this unit. Never been able to get the arlo app to discover the "smart" hub or even my old base station, which I suspect isn't broken now. Been through all their "help" web pages, and even chatted with their support. They said it was my modem blocking certain ports. I have new modem and ISP said nothing is blocked/closed. All my other devices work flawlessly. I've just wasted so much money on arlo devices, that are now paperweights. They have lost a customer.

Has operated great. No real issues so far. Has not caused any real down time. My only concern has been how the usb recording feature has been implemented. Does not allow much freedom for sharing over the network for the administrator.
Why might you buy this?-Ability to connect a hard drive for local recording-HomeKit integration-Gets all the cameras off your normal wifi which should help with speed a bit.Its annoying you need this for HomeKit, but it does what its supposed to and I don't have any complaints. I use it for HomeKit integration (streaming video, notifications, and they can be used as motion sensors), I have a HDD plugged in for redundant storage with the cloud, and it helps get 3 cameras off of my very loaded wifi. NOTE: You will need to reset every single camera and re-set them up using this.
Easy to setup and avoids subscription costs for cloud but recording reliability is very poor. Recordings that happen using cloud don’t happen with Hub. Same with sensitivity, previous things that would trigger recordings on say 75-80% sensitivity, don’t record even when on 100% sensitivity when storing to hub. Spam advertisements to your email and pop ups in the app promoting cloud that didn’t occur before are really annoying too.
Great hub for my Arlo essentials and my old Arlo cameras. I needed this hub to help integrate the Arlo essentials to my app without having them rely on their hubless option. I am grateful to get this when I was notified it was available through Best Buy.
Unable to get Arlo cameras to record to usb drives. I have tried 32gb, 64gb, 2TB, and 4TB drives of a variety of USB drives. The SmartHub says they are formatted and ready to use, but when try to use Camera to use USB drive, it says something is wrong.I have spent over 4 hours looking at Arlo’s website, forums, q&a’s and piddling around with it and still no luck. I would call this a paperweight at this point, but this hub is not heavy enough to be a paperweight. Luckily, I have time to return it.
The only complaint I have is it did not connect at first with Apple homekit. Uninstalled and even called tech support. Finally figured it out on my own.
Well it saves you the monthly fees per camera of $1.99 per camera- allows you to use a USB port on this so called “smart hub” to record all your footage to a external hard drive (thumb external hard drive or stick). Also, I believe may help allow you to make use of the home app if you are a Apple person. That is about all it does that I see but will pay for itself in monthly fees quick depending on how many cameras you have of course.
