This stuff is too messy and not very forgiving to work with. You are better off brushing it on and not dipping. Takes over 24 hours to really dry. You should also use this outdoors or in a very well ventilated area, use it in doors and the whole house will smell. Dries very shinny so you'll need to use a dull coat after. It does leave a very strong protective finish.I recommend to use the Army Painter shades i the 18ml dropper bottles instead. You get the same colors and results without the mess. They are also far easier to work with. Also the shades in the dropper bottles will not leave the shiny finish.

I've bought all 3 large cans of this stuff and the wouldn't recommend it. The droppers are lot more easy to use. I plan on replenishing the droppers with the cans. The can's smell is overpowering and the stain actually dries out when I poured it into smaller glass containers for easier/smaller storage. The varnish likes to separate into solid vs liquids parts. You never want to dip this stuff because it gets gummy and takes forever to dry. So brush it on LIGHTLY. Also, the shine is very pronounced! I just used my old 17ml dropper bottle and it was so much nicer with zero smell! I'm hoping to just refill the 17ml dropper bottles from the cans.

It does not require to be cut with mineral spirits like poly-shades from the hardware store which means color and quality will always be consistent.PRICE: At $30 MSRP the price is frankly absurd. A can of shaded polyurethane is less than 7 dollars, Mineral spirits to cut it with are about $4. This product is sold at a heavy Hobbyist/Enthusiast premium.VALUE: The value of this product varies by how much work you have to do and the available time to do it. This product is great for games like Zombicide, Dungeon Saga, or a KickStarter where you receive over a 100 minis at once. All you need to do is base coat and QuickShade will shade and seal all in one. It's very quick when batch painting, and requires no mixing.TIPS: This is an oil based product and behaves differently than an acrylic based wash. It cures evenly in recesses, so pools actually dry darker rather than unevenly. I recommend brushing on, with a cheap disposable synthetic brush. They can be cleaned right away with water an dish-soap but a lot of people just trash them. I try to brush the shade off of the high areas into the recesses.*I normally only use this product on single piece miniatures as glue (super glue in my experience) makes it turn opaque and bubble (when doing repairs).*There is a strong unpleasant odor when applying and curing. Which along with it being rough on brushes is another reason to queue up your work before breaking out this product. If you are sealing five minis at a time every night the fumes will drive your loved ones nuts.

I've tried these several times now. I've come to the conclusion that you are better off just doing a control wash with just about anything thing else. These stuff is just too messy to work with. I would not recommend dipping, it's better to brush it on, and even then it just takes too much time and effort to deal with it. It's so thick and not very forgiving to work with.I recommend the Army Painter 18ml dropper bottles of the same shades. They work much better, easier to work with, dry faster and give you the same end result with much less fuss.

Great for fast and easy batch miniature painting projects
4 August 2021

I reviewed the use of Army painter Quickshade for several large miniature painting projects. I found it quick and easy to use and produced amazing results with little effort. AP quickshade is best used with a dipping method to rapidly add shade and contrast to a base painted model.

Great product for anyone willing to invest the time to practice with it!

This is a great product, but it does require some skill. Follow all instructions and video tutorials from Army Painter. After some practice on models you are willing to sacrifice, you will get the hang of it. Then you will be glad you did!

This is an excellent product for those whose figure painting skills languish behind the superb examples seen in magazines. This is an oil based thick, dark varnish. painted over painted figures it leaves a dark layer in folds and layers - for example paint an Arab or Ancient Indian with white robes and the cover with Quickshade - the quickshade drys in the cuts and folds and turns plain white into a well painted figure. Since it is a thick varnish it also protects the figure, especially useful when most of us are using acrylic paints which can be rubbed off. It dries to a hard gloss finish but It can be sprayed with a matt varnish to produce a hard matt finish. Go to the Army painter's website for more details. I have tried cheaper acrylic versions but always return ... MoreThis is an excellent product for those whose figure painting skills languish behind the superb examples seen in magazines. Ok, So i bought this thinking it would be a lot faster to use for shading whole armies than using washes. It was - That's great! Except a few things people should know before buying it ... 1/ It's like treacle, Dipping the miniature covers it as expected but then unless you have some form of hanging rail to put the miniatures you'll have to place them on paper or whatever, which causes huge pooling in areas all over the base, and especially in recesses like where a flag is bunched up. This alone isn't a great problem until you try to "Unstick" miniatures from whatever you put them on. 2/ Once dry the shade does look pretty good, but as for shading miniatures quickly, the "Quickshade" does take at least overnight to dry, I had a few groups that took close to 48 ... MoreOk, So i bought this thinking it would be a lot faster to use for shading whole armies than using washes. It doesn't save time, but it does save a lot of precision effort. 3/ The stuff is as shiny as you'll find, high gloss finish, which also isn't a problem "IF" you buy and spray the models after they're dry with the "Anti-shine Varnish" you can also buy from Army painter. If you' don't spray them, they will look terrible. It's a pretty good product for what it does, which is why I've given it the 4 stars, I'll probably only use it in the future for units i don't care too much about, but all in all it's worth a tryif you've got a LOT of miniatures to shade and only a few days to do it in.

fantastic product

This is a fantastic product which I use on all my army painting. It runs into all the crevices and hollows of the models giving the immediate effect of shadows without having to shade and highlight. I paint 15mm ancients and brush it on using a 1 or 2 size brush. Just make sure you don't over apply - if it starts running down the model you've got too much. Brushes can be cleaned with white spirit. When it's dry spray with Army Painter anti shine matt varnish and it's complete. Nice and easy.
