Established in Osaka, Japan in 1889, Asahi was originally called Osaka Beer Company (Osaka Bakushu Kaisha) and even had World War II prisoners from Germany working on the production line in their brewery. Asahi Super Dry is a 5% ABV Japanese lager that has been highly impactful in the what is the Japanese beer industry today. Launching in 1987 as a lager with lighter malt characteristics than a lot of their competitors at the time and a refreshingly dry finish more commonly found in beers from northern Germany. Super smooth, rich in flavour and an absolute thirst crusher!

This beer is terribly inconsistent in both flavor and texture. I purchased a carton of the "brewed under licence by: Beijing Beer Asahi" and this stuff is terrible. The flavor is absolutely nothing like the stuff I have had previously brewed in Japan or even Thailand. To begin with it has a foul smell, has an initial off fruit/apple flavour about it, lacks initial bitterness and texture and follows through with an astringent aftertaste. Congratulations on managing to ruin one of my favourite lagers.

In keeping with a long-standing family tradition, I put half a dozen beers each out for the garbage collectors a day or two before Christmas Day. Asahi Super Dry was the perfect choice as I wouldn't give them rubbish.

I didn’t realise this was brewed in Australia until I checked the bottle after experiencing the weird, almost toothpaste-like, cloying after-taste I was treated to after a couple of sips. Disgusting. Really.

Crisp and clean
20 September 2016

Clean, crisp taste with minimal sweetness in the taste, not much aftertaste. Fresh lemongrass smell. Looked beautiful in the glass after the pour, very carbonated. Flavor and taste gets stronger towards the end of the glass.

Fake Beer

Yet another Japanese beer made on the island of Australia. Don’t be conned this rubbish is made in Melbourne. If you want to try the real Japanese version try the 500ml can which is actually made in Japan.

Great beer locally brewed
16 January 2022

Initially the Japanese brewed version was the very best Asahi beer. I tried the Chinese brewed version once. Vowed never to touch it again. Dishwater!! This Australian brewed version now is quite good. No complaints. My preference beer once again.

It's even better now ....
12 June 2021

This is now my go to beer , particularly when on special and it even tastes better now that it is brewed and bottled in Australia. Previously Japan's No 1 beer was brewed and bottled in China, go figure ??? so obviously it taste much better now !!!

My favourite drinkable brew
31 December 2019

Lighter flavoured than Australian lagers but with a crisp bite, one of the world's most popular beers with good reason, being very approachable and perfect served cold on a hot summer's day. Great alongside your favourite spicy stirfry or curry, and easy enough to session on its own.

Smooth brew
18 November 2021

This premium lager has a really smooth mouth feel and finish. A good alternative to the range of dry and crisp or bitter lagers in the market. Grab it when it's on special to avoid paying the premium price.

The best from Japan
31 January 2022

A lovely crisp beer that has enough taste to be interesting but not with a cloying after taste that lingers. A delight to drink. Without a doubt the best from Japan along with the black from the same stable.
