'Defective' shoe

I bought my first Trabuco Max 2 and it was fine. I bought a second and used it for just over a week (<50 miles) just before a twenty four hour race. 21 hours into the race the material inside the shoe broke through the heel through the insole and into my foot. It made the shoe unwearable as is. Was going to race (cross country barefoot) when another runner gave me their insole and then with moleskin and several layers of duct tape it was barely wearable. INCREDIBLELY, ASICS WON"T REFUND AS THEY SAY THIS IS NOT A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. After 20 years I will never by another Asic again.

This is my first Asics shoe as an adult and I only have two 8-9 mile trail runs in these so far. I took a chance on them while on sale; thinking they will be a solid training shoe and maybe race shoe for an upcoming 50 mile trail ultra. My comparisons are Hoka SpeedGoats and Saucony Exodus Ultra V1. My foot is between sizes 10.5 & 11; and slightly on the wider side. The Speedgoat 5 in size 10.5 is a touch tight. The Exodus Ultra in 11 is a bit loose. The Traduce Max 2 in size 11 is just right. It has good room for my toes without being loose or sloppy. Heel lockdown is perfect for me. Underfoot protection is solid. The Trabuco midsole isn't quite as soft & bouncy as the PB-based foam in the Xodus, but it still feels good; and I expect it will soften up with more ... MoreThis is my first Asics shoe as an adult and I only have two 8-9 mile trail runs in these so far. Traction has been outstanding on wet roots, rocks and wooden bridge crossings. I read comments about rolling ankles in technical terrain, but I find the Trabuco Max 2 to be very stable thanks to its excellent fit and wide outsole. I also feel like they roll through my gait pretty well.I tend to blow out my trail shoes at around 250-300 miles. The upper on the Trabuco is thick and possibly a bit heavier than my other trail shoes, but I feel like this should help it last long. It feels like a fair trade-off that contributes to a solid & durable feel.If I had to say anything negative: 1) As already noted, the upper is a bit thick, but I feel like this will increase durability. 2) The midsole is not as soft/springy as some super foams, but it still provides a comfortable ride. 3) They are noisy; all that grip sounds like an all-terrain tire rolling on gravel. I don't care about this last point, but I won't be sneaking up on anyone in these shoes.Overall, I am very pleased with the purchase and look forward to many miles in the Trabuco Max 2.

Great Long Haul Non-Technical Shoe
28 April 2023

Pros: Breathable upper, traditional laces with lace garage, cloud like cushion that is still responsive, wider toe boxCons: Poor performance on technical sections due to base being wider than normal (similar to Bondi 8 style but not as pronounced) which makes it easier to twist your ankle. I had to slow down on technical sections to focus on foot placement way more than usual as the wide base kept getting in the way and catching rocks on the side. The wider toe box is welcome especially for those long haul races, but my feet did not feel secure which caused them to move around more and aided in the ankle twisting time on technicals and downhills. Couldn't get the lacing to help secure my feet Not keen on the wider base as I normally can take technical sections ... MorePros: Breathable upper, traditional laces with lace garage, cloud like cushion that is still responsive, wider toe boxCons: Poor performance on technical sections due to base being wider than normal (similar to Bondi 8 style but not as pronounced) which makes it easier to twist your ankle. I would only recommend these shoes for trails wider than 6" and for trails that have no major rooty or rocky sections as you will need all the space to place your feet with the wide base. I'd still recommend these shoes but only for long haul rail to trail or non technical trails. If you are going to go fast and have a lot of turns or any technical spots, these may not be the best.

Great recommendation by the ASICS team.
9 December 2023

These shoes are fantastic. I’m an ASICS fan to start with, but had purchased the wrong Trabuco model for myself. I phoned the ASICS customer service team and they recommended Trabuco Max 2. This was a such a great shout on their part. They’re comfortable and cushioned, but still feel stable and solid on shifting ground. Ground grip is enough to make me feel safe without restricting my interaction with the slopes of a forest trail. I’m just a newbie runner, so can’t give much in the way of technical feedback, but at my stage I want to feel supported, comfortable and stable in my shoes: Trabuco Max 2 delivers. And they look awesome!

Great shoes. Best for those with lots of walking/w
8 February 2024

I originally disliked them as they were super bouncy and odd to walk (think overcushioned)But as i wore them over time,They adjusted to my step and my liking. The grip is very nice and they respond well to humid conditions/ slippery ground.Overall, i am very happy with being able to try to shoes before i bought. If i could i would buy some to gift to shows others these shoes are good for those with weak knees or in need of orthopedic comfort and stability.

Really disappointed
29 January 2024

After running in the Trabuco Max for the last 3 years and desperately needing a replacement I was so excited to buy the new version Max 2. Unfortunately I have made the decision to never run in these shoes again because they are just too scary to trail run in. They would be okay on even surfaces, but I have found them to be very unstable and tippy and I have felt like I was going to sprain my ankle on many occasions. I have actually rolled my ankle badly today which has made me want to give up with running in these shoes again. Regarding sizing I purchased the same size as my last pair but they feel slightly bigger. I do prefer the new lacing system.

Superb all-terrain running shoe
17 October 2023

Superb all-terrain running shoe for road/field/mud/gravel and general everyday off-road running with some road-work thrown in. The first max-cushion shoe I've owned and what a difference, it's like having young legs back! Fast and grippy over all terrain. The wide base makes them very stable and supportive. I'm normally UK 11.0 EU 46.5 but went for UK 11.5 EU 47 with these to give enough toe box room. Might just be the shape of my feet in these shoes, either way the fit is superb. Brilliant all-terrain running shoes.

They are great. ASICS always is.

I love the difference between trail and track shoe. This shoes definitely can handle unpaved and ungroomed surfaces. I'm also enjoying wearing them at the gym. But I have my track shoes, too, for the track (and the gym) when I get around to jogging. Both types are very comfortable. I suppose the extra sole thickness does make for more support on rocky trails. I'll be bringing my Trabuco Max 2's to my hiking tour this summer, where there will be some steep trails which required good foot support but where I don't want to be wearing my heavy leather boots all day.

Trabuco Max 2- utter disappointment
17 March 2023

Having worked my way through 6 pairs of the original Trabuco Max, I was very excited and eager to try it out the second version.OK, when I got over the initial shock of the stack height, I thought I should at least try it out ( albeit on my treadmill), I was very disappointed indeed, with what seemed like a shoe that was no relative of it's 'little brother', the original shoe. It was like two separate parts: an upper glued to a supersized sole. Yes, the shoe was super soft, but it was actually very scary to run in, as heel and midfoot lock down was poor, and the toebox excessively big. I ran size UK 6.5 in the original model as the toe box was tight, but this shoe was way too big for my narrower foot. It was like trying to run on ice with poorly fitting boots. On a plus point, the quick lace had gone, although I had hoped for a more functional quicklace rather than laces. The horrible , oversized tongue was replaced thankfully. Beyond that, I quite simply could not run confidently in the shoe, out of lack of stability and fear of rolling an ankle. Maybe on tinder dry rocky paths it may suit some, but mixed terrain and muddy soft ground especially would definitely give me problems on my ultra runs. I was so disappointed and let down that I have gone out and bought 2 pairs of the original shoes for my mixed terrain September Ultra.
