Excellent budget motherboard (but not for Linux?)

I dislike using the word 'budget' on great products. The B560 Steel Legend is a great motherboard because it has all the necessary 'basic' features to power your intel system.
It's compatible with both 10th gen Comet Lake and 11th gen Rocket Lake cpus.It took me a long time to decide which motherboard to go for, as I was building a brand new PC.
I chose this motherboard because of the following reasons:- I needed something that does the job, instead of those with a million usb ports, dual LAN, integrated hi-fi system,
thunderbolt etc etc.... all features that those expensive motherboards (£200-450+ range) seem to focus on, and that are of no real value to me for a home com... Show more

I would buy this again. I am not over clocking, or doing anything radical. Just want a simple reliable Motherboard, and this delivers. Supports my system with an 11700K and
fast M1 SSD. ( No graphics card, this system is for work. )

I chose this motherboard because of the following reasons:- I needed something that does the job, instead of those with a million usb ports, dual LAN, integrated hi-fi system, thunderbolt etc etc.... all features that those expensive motherboards (£200-450+ range) seem to focus on, and that are of no real value to me for a home computer. It's super easy to spend hundreds of pounds on a great-looking motherboard which lots of features, but it takes real research to realise that the most basic product can also do the same thing, and sometimes better.- I wanted an Asrock motherboard because something about the brand and products strikes me as simplicity and performance as the most important factors.I consider myself a first time builder, although I'm not new to going inside a PC. The most complicated thing I found with this motherboard was finding out how to connect the power cables from the pc case to the motherboard. The information is in the manual, and I also had a bit of help from tech people on a discord server. If you get stuck building your pc for the first time, read the manual, search the web for answers etc...you'll get there in the end, you just need patience.IMPORTANT NOTES -There are a few important things to consider when purchasing the B560 Steel Legend:1. There are 3 m.2 slots on the motherboard which can all take ssd hard drives, but they are not meant for the same type.-top m.2 slot is for a pcie gen 4.0 which is the latest nvme. This slot can also take the older 3.0 nvme drives, but they will not run at x4 speed.-middle slot is for SATA m.2 drives, like the Samsung 860 evo and Crucial MX500. I made the mistake of putting my nvme ssd in this slot and then spent hours trying to find out why it wasn't running at max speed (because it's a x2 slot and not x4!). This doesn't really limit your general windows performance, but when you are copying large files or doing hard drive intensive workloads, your nvme will not run at max speeds if you are using the wrong slot.-bottom slot is for pcie gen 3.0 x4.-The top m.2 slot does not work if you use a 10th gen Comet Lake chip on this motherboard.-There is another m.2 slot but this is for a wifi module only.-If you are using overclocked memory, and you can't get it to run in XMP mode, switch the ram modules over to the following dimm slots: A2, B2, and it should work. I have 2x 8gb Corsair LPX 3600 ram, which were in slots A1, B1, and XMP mode did not work, however moving the ram modules to the neighbouring slots and everything worked fine!-had great problems trying to install Linux on this system. I'm not sure if it's due to the hardware (my full setup is below), or Linux drivers that need to be updated to work with the new motherboards, but I tried 5 different distros (all common), and only got one to install properly, and even then had display problems, so gave up.This is my current build - everything purchased on Scan:B560 Steel Legendi3 10100 cpu (plan on upgrading this to Rocket Lake, but for now it's a great starter cpu)2x8gb Corsair LPX 3600 ramCorsair MP510 480gb nvme1tb Seagate Barracuda HDD750w Seasonic Prime TX psuCorsair 4000d airflow white pc caseWifi module for onboard m.2 slot: Gigabyte M.2 Intel CNVi Wireless AC Wave2 WiFi Adapter with Bluetooth 5All products above are literally plug-and-play, no issues whatsoever except for the mentioned ram xmp speed and making sure your nvme ssd is installed in the correct slot.CONCLUSIONYou won't be disappointed with this motherboard. I run windows from the nvme and use the hdd as a backup and for extra software/games. The bootup time into windows is no more than 6-8 seconds, it's extremely fast! I didn't notice a difference in system performance going from the default ram speed of 2133, to xmp mode which is 3600. Even at 2133 speed, the startup time and windows application speed is fast. I guess higher ram speed is more important when playing games? The RGB on the motherboard is really nice to watch. The software for the motherboard can be downloaded from Asrock's website, and it's ok to play around with at first, but isn't really needed, apart from maybe the Nahimic sound software. Everything works from windows updates.THINGS I WOULD CHANGE?-Make this motherboard compatible with Linux distros for easy install.-It would also be very helpful for first time builders if the items/connectors in the motherboard box are labelled, such as "m.2 screw" and "sata cable". Things like this take a lot of guess work and a lot of time can be saved if there were clear labels instead of barcodes on each packaging.I would definitely buy this again.... Show more

Good for new builds, maybe not for upgraders
15 May 2021
If you're building a brand new computer with modern components, this will probably go well for you. I was upgrading from Haswell and needed internal USB 2.0 headers for my AIO cooler's pump control, an RGB hub, and front panel USB 2.0 ports, so a separate USB header splitter was required. The smaller micro-ATX version of this board inexplicably has double the USB 2.0 headers. Also, since I was re-using a case, the motherboard's internal USB type C header is unused.... Show more

Great Mid tier mobo
11 August 2021
It's a great motherboard with good vrm cooling and power delivery. I wanted to get a mid tier b560 to test with a 10th gen 10700F and to try to get 4.6 GHZ all core. While this was very easy, with an almost one click option in bios, I do wish I had done a little more research. Apparently Asrock limits the "power limit boost" to 125 watts, although in the bios when you select the option to open the power limit it states 200 watts for PL1 and unlimited for PL2. It does hold 4.6 GHZ all core though, so I'm not dissapointed at all....max temps once I reseat my H100i and ran pump on performance mode was 75C in cinebench R23 @4.6 GHZ. Otherwise, a great motherboard.... Show more

Great MOBO
26 June 2021
Just completed my first build with this MOBO, easy BIOS setup with XMP enabled and booted first try. The color scheme worked for my white Corsair case and components(Still trying to secure a white GPU). I researched the supported M.2 slots before purchasing those to insure compatibility, so now I'm using 1.5TB M.2 with a 2TB HDD. I had plans to hardwire it but decided not to and had to purchase a WiFi card but that's on me as I knew it didn't come with WiFi but it does have a M.2 Wifi key slot. A little nit pick is there is no heatsink on the M.2 Ultra slot while there is one on the Hyper slot so I purchased a silver heatsink to match the board. Overall with this being my first build I can't complain.... Show more
