Welcome to Wifi 6. Speed. Reliability. No buffering. No problem connecting many devices. This router does all of these in spade. It is also small and wall mountable. Setup is easy. And oh, gaming mode is fun.Cons: I wish it was Wifi 6e instead of 6 only. 😀

The interface is a little slow, but the speed that this little toy provides to the connected devices is phenomenal. You have a ton of settings, you can play and turn on/off the internet access to every single user. One of my buddies was impressed with this and he asked me to buy the ASUS ZAKU Edition router for him. This one and the standard version have the exact build components. The settings you get with this ASUS router allow to you send your kids to bed at "normal" hours. I consider myself a tech enthusiast. You can even get a open-source firmware on this, something like Merlin. I highly recommend the ZAKU Edition RT-AX86U router.

Hey I bought this thing to future proof my internet for the next 5yrs minimum. It's overkill for my small home and only 10 connected devices at most. Usually that number is only 7 with a max of 5 being used at the same time. The fact this can handle like 35 devices means I can use it when I move into a larger home and start getting more smart devices. Maybe I will buy that talking toaster after all. So far it provides me with good speeds on all connected devices and I haven't had any issues with it dropping out on me. The quick toggle VPN is pretty cool too. Love that the updates notify me of when they are being installed. Love that I can make certain devices priority. Don't watch Gundam but maybe I should now. The red does look pretty sick.

Awesome Router
17 November 2021

It's one of the newer and most capable "consumer" routers on the market unless you really want to mess with the 6GHz band. The theming is pretty nice and I got this limited edition version instead of the standard version as I could find it for a reasonible price. The scalpers are more often out for the standard version, it seems. For just being a router, the standard edition's aesthetics (not this version), while more neutral in black, are a bit over the top for me. I prefer the lower profile look of the older RT-AC68W and similar in general. At least this RT-AX86U "gaming" router is a bit more reserved than some of their other routers. I prefer the lower profile look of the older RT-AC68W and similar in general. At least this RT-AX86U "gaming" router is a bit more reserved than some of their other routers. I do not use the third party, mobile, or similar Asus cloud type services and apps, and treat them more as added bloat on the CPU, RAM, and network traffic, and a potential privacy and security concern, and don't really recommend them unless you need or want to use them for some specific reason. The router is great at being a feature-rich router as it is without them. In general, I'd say don't use any of the add-on type features unless you specifically know you want to, not just because they sound good or you get scared into thinking you need them. The router works well and arguably even better without them. Don't let the name fool you. This isn't just a cheesy "gaming" router with "gamer" aesthetics. It's very capable as a general and advanced home, office, and small business router, and you can really dig into the settings and make this baby hum like the finely engineered machine that it is. Asus have been working a long time at expanding and dialing in the features of their routers, and have overall been doing a fantastic job of it for many years, in spite of trying to appeal to "gamers" and get people to use their cloud services. Make sure you check for firmware updates to help sort out potential bugs or security vulnerabilities, and occasionally get newer feature updates at least that's been my experience with their earlier routers like this one. However, If you're actively logging in and monitoring the the router at least every once in a while, I would not recommend using automatic updates. Updates can and have very rarely caused unintended issues on Asus routers. As they say, "don't fix what isn't broken," bearing in mind that fixing found security issues does count as fixing something that is broken. Anyway, yeah, it's a great router. Enjoy.

Blazing fast across the board, great coverage
30 August 2021

I bought this router to upgrade my old and trusty Netgear AC1900. I was hesitant since the old one has been hassle free with decent speeds. I got the ax86u to upgrade to WiFi 6 I also wanted the 2.5gb port as I have 1.2gb service with a Motorola 8611 modem also with a 2.5gb port. I liked the flexibly of using the aimesh if needed but it seems I won’t. My house is 3900sqft, two stories and a basement, the coverage is great any where in the house. My 5ghz speeds went from about 350mb a sec to 7-800mb on an iPhone 11. Also have devices in my basement wired through a switch and saw a 200mb a sec speed increase on those devices.Very happy and impressed.

Easy to setup, good UI
6 October 2021

This router is providing good coverage in a large, Victorian, lath & plaster house. So far no one has had issues with dropped connections or poor signal. I like the ASUS interface. It's full featured but you only have to dig as deep as you feel like. None of the granular features are hard to find. The router looks cool, but is in a place no one can appreciate the Gundam inspired design.

Flashed to ASUS WRT Merlin and it works really well
1 March 2023

The hardware is great, whatever firmware you use. I was having issues with devices being disconnected from my internet supplier's modem's wifi - iPhone, Android and Windows likewise. No problems with this ASUS! The standard ASUS firmware looks good, however I went with the WRT-Merlin firmware and found it really nice to use. I was planning on using DD-WRT because I think it is safer than proprietary firmwares, however, it *seems* that WRT-Merlin is pretty secure too. Being security conscious, I turned off the wifi on my internet supplier's modem and use this ASUS RT-AX86U as my firewall & router. It is much better than the internet supplier's device in terms of performance, configuration options, traffic monitoring and ease of use (sorry Net+).

Great router

I decided to replace my TP-Link Archer 2300 version 1 as the signal was very poor insome parts of my flat. After good reviews I decided to buy the Asus Rt-Ax86U Wifi 6 Ax5700 Dual Band Router.I have only had the router for just over a week so can’t comment on long term reliablity. After the usual fiddle setting it u (I used the phone app which worked well). I kept the same Channel names, split into separate 5 and 2.4 Ghz channels. I almost went for the cheaper option (ASUS RT-AX86S ) without the gaming port (which I don’t need) but noticed that both the ram (1gb v 512mb and processor (1Gb quad v dual) were higher spec on this one. I fired it up and was amazed at the improvement in coverage. I almost went for a mesh system but thought I would try this first. I have a large Victorian flat and the main walls are a very dense stone and 20 inches thick. I placed the router centrally near a door on top of a unit which is 3 feet off the ground. My Virgin hub 4 is in modem mode. My account offers me speeds up to 130 mbps. I got this in all my main rooms on the 5Hz channel. (I even occasionally get 140mbps in one room!). I also get 130 mbps in my garden some 40 feet away. It slows down considerably if I move behind a large dense spruce tree. WiFi is a bit of a dark art (: and every home is constructed very differently so you may get very different results but this worked for me!

No Red antenna!?
7 July 2021

I have not used it yet because its missing the red accented antenna. I asked Asus support for a red antenna because it was suppose to come with it. I may sound like I am whining but this is a limited time edition available to the U.S. and I don't want a half-a ss collaboration if my Zaku router does not have the red antenna. Then was told to contact Newegg they said they don't can't send the red antenna and its better to return the item.... how do they have red antenna's instock? if they do, wouldn't it be better to do a swap and not send the whole item back after it just got here in two weeks? I am sure it is a nice router and works great since its wifi 6 but looks matter too to me. Even if I do the replacement, how am I sure I won't get another dud without the red ... MoreI have not used it yet because its missing the red accented antenna. Very Impressed
8 April 2022

Connected to my ONT with Sky FTTP Broadband with very little config setup. Was easily able to update my Port-forwarding and reserve specific IPs for devices on my network.Throughput over wireless is less than advertised but is as expected.Consistently getting 600-700Mbps over Wifi 6 on a 900Mbps FTTP connection.I am able to stream local 4k Content over wireless without any issues. Very happy with this router.
