ASUS DSL-AC68U is fine by me.

Bought this VDSL modem/router online from Bing Lee for $299 (as at July 2021) to replace the crappy, overheating, unreliable TP-Link Archer V1600 given to me by TPG. The ASUS DSL-AC68U is older technology to be sure, but the firmware out of the box is relatively up to date and can be easily updated if necessary. The dual-CPU (one for 2.4GHz and one for 5GHz) means this baby purrs along without raising a sweat (dual channel wifi is more than enough for me). Setup was a breeze and the onboard menus easy to navigate, if a little dated in style. Wireless speed, range and reliability are excellent (I live in a moderately sized 4-bedroom brick house). Best of all it runs 24x7 without overheating or dropping out and consistently hits the the top speeds of my NBN50 plan. ... MoreBought this VDSL modem/router online from Bing Lee for $299 (as at July 2021) to replace the crappy, overheating, unreliable TP-Link Archer V1600 given to me by TPG. Another nice feature which the Archer V1600 doesn't allow is the ability to backup the onboard configuration if you need to restore your tailored settings after a factory-reset. I'm more than happy with this modem/router: it's as steady as a rock. Sidenote 1: Be sure to order the 'DSL' model not the 'RT' model (the RT is a router only) unless you plan to pair it to an existing modem. Sidenote 2: I'm not an online gamer and bought the DSL-AC68U for general pupose surfing, streaming TV, YouTube, VPN etc. If you're a serious online gamer, this modem/router might be a little underpowered for you.

Excellent features and good performance.

Excellent router. Good points: 1. Good performance with one proviso - see below. 2. Excellent interface which is very quick with lots of options to tweak if you're that way inclined. However, it is also easy to set up if you're not interested in tweaking. 3. Brilliant free AiProtection by Trend Micro, which gives even more added protection from web nasties. 4. ASUS Merlin offshoot Gnuton (Google it) firmware for DSL routers is well worth using - enhances the already good ASUS firmware. 5. Although an older router, ASUS are still providing firmware updates as of writing. Excellent. 6. Previous connection issues with the modem have been sorted with latest firmwares. 7. Can be easily configure to run in router only mode so as to use another external modem. Not so good ... MoreExcellent router. Good points: 1. Good performance with one proviso - see below. 2. Modem is a MediaTek which is not as good as, say, a Broadcom and may not cope well if you are some distance from the exchange. However, note point 7 above. All in all, I really like this router.

I get 180Mbps reliably to Comcast with it with new Black Friday Laptop and max out the capabilities of my older 10/00/1000 and wireless networks with speed between 70Mbps and 172Mbps depending on adapter and computer vintage.. Its wireless coverage is more than adequate to provide a strong to excellent signal in both 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz bands in my small 2560 sq. ft. home including the 1200 sq. ft. basement. Before this router I tried using a Linksys WRT1900AC which did not reliably connect at AC600 or AC 1200 speeds on the 5.0Ghz band. This one does and its Web applicationis fairly easy to use to maximize the throughput of this router. It easily handles streaming video to three TV's a 4K feed thru Netflix and Xffinity feeds to other TV's and computers concurrently. I uninstalled the WRT1900AC and installed this RT-68U in its place and instantly saw the improvement in my networks performance without making any changes. Once I used the Web application to fine tune its performance the network is considerably better than when I had the WRT1900AC in place. This one is a keeper.

Great if you want a low maintenance router

I wanted a new router to replace my aging D-Link. My criteria was that the router needed to be as low maintenance as possible, while still offering enough control of the need ever arises. This router was perfect for this. I also wanted a router that could work without a hitch even when downloading big games from steams. The setup was easy enough. My Laptop did not had a network plug, nor a CD drive, but the router start with an unsecured wireless network that can be used for that purpose. The first restart however took a bit of time and almost made me sweat because I tough to I had broken the device... The admin UI is full of outdated gloss effect from the “web 2.0” era, and make the product look old. However, it work well and handily beats down most software made by hardware makers (the bar is not very high). You can easily see the current load on your router and the memory usage. The navigation is good enough, and it is very easy to install firmware update with the click of a button: there is no need to fiddle with A download website with horrendous UX to find the firmware image among a confusing set of similar named products. Performance wise, you are looking at a 2 core router with 256 MB of RAM. For a household with a few laptops, phones a game console, this is enough. I haven’t noticed any drop of performance no matter where my laptop is in the house. The router allow you to install “apps” that can do thing like quality of service, but those of course will eat into your memory and CPUs. So far, this router fulfill its goal of being an invisible piece of hardware I don’t have to think about. I feel like I’ll be able to let it ticking along under the stair for the next 8 years, like my last one. That is all I am asking for for that kind of hardware.

Singla strength of 5ghz is decent going through 2 rooms (3 walls, fridge, and cabinet). Ideally should be mounted in the middle of the apartment or a place where the signal doesnt pass through so many obstacles for best results). Functions as a NAS that can be accessed over the internet from ANYWHERE through your own private portal, all you need is your own external storage to connect to it. Has built in security measures and Anti DDOS attacks, firewall, and many more features that may not impact normal home users but for the advanced user provides a decent scope of security and options to maintain your network and make private and guest networks. The only downside is it has a fixed stand and no wall mounting options, but with some L brackets and a nice piece of wood you can build a cozy shelf for it on the wall if need be. Please note most router/modems provided by your internet provider can only reach speeds of 30-50 Mbps over WIFI (after tweaking settings). so if you are paying for a 100+ Mbps connection be aware, please do a speedtest to check.

All the research I did all the reviews I read and all of the information I gathered pointed me to the RT ac68u. I have not used it long and I have not even gone into tweak any settings I'm just running it with the default easy setup and I am genuinely surprised by how good the performance is.I thought a lot of the reviews exaggerated or people were just trying to justify their purchase or make themselves feel better by embellishing how great the router is.. within 5 minutes of getting everything set up the difference was ... MoreI have a very good gateway from my ISP that does an okay job throughout our house. it doesn't have great range and loses speed a distance very rapidly so I started to look for something with high throughput and greater ranges as an alternative. So far this router has not dropped below for bars anywhere and that was just briefly Mitchell v bar pops back up at the farthest corners of our home I can hit my isp's advertised speed wirelessly granted in my area the internet tops out at 120 meigs down but even so I'm able to achieve those speeds consistently and wirelessly. With the old gateway I could hit that type of speed but only when you were in near proximity to the gateway the ASUS router consistently test it at that speed no matter how far away I got in the house. In the next couple weeks I am to begin beta testing gigabit internet in our area from my ISP do my work for that is when the real test will happen even though they want me to use there gateway I have made arrangements to use this router as a another facet of the beta testing and I am excited to see how well it performs. It is still early but initial impressions have been overwhelmingly positive and far surpassed even my high expectations. If you would have told me that wireless internet was possible at these speeds and distances I would have thought you crazy but now I'm a believer. I will update this review if anything changes or I notice any drop off in performance especially after the new gigabit speeds are installed if I don't update it it is only because it is continuing to perform above and beyond my expectations. At this point I highly recommended it and after seeing how it performs I would not even consider another router especially at the price point you're not going to find anything better performing, you could spend a great deal more but how can you get better than near perfection as far as performance alone not even taking into consideration the value for the price

Long Frustrating Setup
11 January 2024

I had been reasonably satisfied with the RT AC5300 that I’ve owned for several years. As there were a couple of dead/low signal areas in our home I decided to add this model as an aiMesh node. I lost track of how many times I worked through all the steps to get this node functional. I even watched a plethora of YouTube videos. I had given up hope of making this unit work as a Mesh node and had started to look for alternatives. It was at this point that my wife suggested that I try one more time. Reluctantly, I tried one last time and to my surprise it worked.

Good Points: Actually comes with a built in modem, a rarity these days.Lots of config options and network tools to use, like it’ll do time machine backups for you if you connect a hard drive.Good user interface overall.Improvement Points: You can’t configure the DNS completely, it will let you override a single DNS provider but it will keep another one from you, this means that somewhere in the region of half of your DNS requests will ignore your chosen provider. This is a big deal if you’re using PiHole as a DNS filter like I was.The only way to get around this is to use a custom firmware. Best router I've ever had, and that is many. Covers entire house, yard, inside of garage and can also connect a block away from inside my bank. I had to enable MAC filters because someone in the neighborhood figured out our password and was using my connection to download illegal movies. I can stream 3 TV's, internet browsing and PS5 online gaming on another TV and never get a hiccup. Resets only if power goes down. No problems and can even schedule resets in the menu. Very advanced features but you can flash other firmware on it if you feel the need - and I've had no problems in 4 years. Has already lasted twice as long as any other router I've ever had.

[Rewarded Review] Money well spent!
12 February 2024

I purchased the Asus router to solve a problem with my new 5G phone connecting to the internet. All new cell phones require WPA3 security and the best the older cable modems/routers provide is WPA2. To my surprise it solved another serious problem. I stream news from various networks and found them to freeze every few minutes and it was annoying. I tried everything suggested on Google and nothing worked. When I installed my Asus router, the freezing problem went away! Great buy!
