Replacing a ISP-supplied router, was able to set up VLAN tagging and other options necessary to swap in the RT-AX55 with no issues. Added bonus was ability to configure the dual-band smart network option, one wifi name/network for both 2.4 and 5GHz radios. Will be trying out the VPN forwarding/config settings in the near future. Don't have any need for the mesh capabilities at this time but they seemed easy to set up from the admin gui as well

I purchased the Asus AX1800 router to use in a small biz office environment. This router has proven to be both dependable and offers fast speeds for all users in our environment. As with any router, make sure to update the firmware immediately for the latest updates and features. I setup this router entirely with the free Asus app, and the administrative features are intuitive enough for new users but offer features for advanced network control. As a side note, the difference between the AX1800 and AX1800S is the processor. This model, the AX1800 has a superior Broadcom quad core processor as compared to the dual core processor in the lower priced AX1800S. Pros: The interface for setting up the router is clean and easy to use.It was very easy to attach my Nord VPN to this router and it does work as desired with stream services. The router is much more reliable than my 10+ year old Netgear router. This router works great for gaming and streaming services so far.Cons: I have been running this for a few months now and I have already had it drop connection to the internet a couple of times. It was around times of heavy data usage though. The LEDs on the front are bright and easy to see but it is hard to tell what each of them means because the symbols are so tiny and not in an easy-to-view spot. I would have liked to see the led lights replaced with illuminated symbols instead as I had on my older Netgear ... I recently installed a smart internet-connected thermostat. Actually, these types of devices aren't so smart, they are LAN weak points that are susceptible to hacker attacks. I needed a new router that can separate this and similar devices from my central computing equipment and resources. This Asus router offers multiple guest accounts which are isolated from my central LAN. I devoted one of those to my thermostat and accomplished my objective. An unexpected benefit has been a significant increase in internet throughput. My old router tested at about 65Mbps which is consistent with the 60Mbps account I have with Comcast. This new router tests at up to 120Mbps and this is not a measurement fluke, web sites load faster and my Netflix client also reports throughput ... Everything was easy to set up and understand.I think I'm going to enjoy this router for several years.
I bought this router after our old one blew up recently, so I had to find a replacement in a hurry. I think I made a good decision, it's been great so far.Likes:It's a compact unit, but with good specs. It is able to handle all our house traffic (WAN speed is 150 mb/s down, 15 up) with no problem. The software has a lot of features, all kinds of traffic monitoring and shaping abilities. It supports an app so you can monitor and manage from your phone as well. The web interface for managing the router is nicely laid out and easy to use.It seems to be actively supported, I have already had one update since I purchased it.I have not used it yet, but you can connect a USB hard drive to it and have it act as a file server.I really like the DHCP server manual ... This means you don't need to set up static IPs anymore, the router can handle all that. It's supposed to be ready for the next generation of wifi, which I don't have and supported devices yet, but a little future proofing makes me feel better...Dislikes:I think that the wireless range is not quite as good as the previous router that we had.I had a problem setting up the router, but it turns out it was my problem. I will relay it here in case anyone else runs into it. The router uses a different numbering scheme than my last one (192.168.50.x), and I had some static IPs defined for some of my devices, including my desktop pc. That was the one I was trying to use to initially configure the router, and it was (understandably, in retrospect) not working because the request was coming from a foreign network address. I eventually downloaded the app and got the router updated and configured that way.I did have a problem connecting with some wireless devices, where it would take a few seconds after the device woke up to connect to the access point. So I turned off the 'smart connect' feature which tries to pretend that the 2 and 5 GHz access points are one. That solved my problem. Nice to have the option to disable features that you don't want or need.
The Covid-19 pandemic lockdown significantly stressed the Sagecom F@st router provided by my ISP. After much research, and settling for what was available, I decided to try the Asus RT-AX56U to increase the speeds for our iPhone users and future proof our systems with the new WiFi 6 (AX) standard. By way of reference, I've installed and configured many, many routers over the years and this one has proven to be the most problematic because of buggy firmware for the PC GUI. The firmware updated immediately upon connecting it to the modem, so i know it was working on the latest version, but it proved frustrating to configure because the GUI wouldn't allow me to complete my selections ("Apply") on certain screens and fields, e.g. WPS switch would not turn off, Guest ... The firmware updated immediately upon connecting it to the modem, so i know it was working on the latest version, but it proved frustrating to configure because the GUI wouldn't allow me to complete my selections ("Apply") on certain screens and fields, e.g. WPS switch would not turn off, Guest Access kept defaulting to WEP security, Guest Access never completed, broadcast SSID would not turn off, Could not change administrator name after initial, requiring email and password to setup security, etc. It was also frustrating to learn the system will not allow you to use WPA2/WPA3 security in a mesh configuration. There is no option for phone contact with Asus and the support via email has been absolutely abysmal. On a whim i used the android app to attempt some of the configuration changes and was able to get some of the toggle buttons to work, which appears to confirm my thought that this is botched Firmware for the PC. I cannot recommend this experience for anyone, and am planning to return and try shift over to either teh TP-Link or NetGear. I hope this saves someone the hassle and disappointment of expecting great things from Asus.
I am using this router for 2 years now, starting from 2021. The first year was great. No issues were found. In the second year, I started to get either "Network access denied" while connecting to Wifi, or "No internet when connected to Wifi", even after firmware update. At the beginning, only 1 device has that issue. Getting worse, all of 3 devices have the same issues. Restarting using software or the physical switch won't resolve the problem until resetting the router. It usually happens in the morning. If you work at home, I recommend thinking twice before purchasing this model.
The RT-AX56U is reasonably priced router with good range, performance and features. Placed centrally within my 4 bedroom, single-storey home it gives me strong 5GHz coverage to the entire house & most of the 600m2 property. Where the 5GHz radio doesn't reach then the 2.4GHz radio does the job well. WiFi roaming or auto-failover (or whatever the technical term is) between the 5GHz & 2.4GHz radios, when both using the same SSID, is seamless. The router has some great features, QoS, VPN, DMZ, parental controls, etc., most of which I don't use but it's nice to know they're available should I need them. Plus, being an ASUS Ai-Mesh router, there's the really handy ability to extend WiFi coverage if needed. Wired, wireless or auto-detect backhaul support to boot. I have ... I have tested the Ai-Mesh and it works great. I no longer use it though because it turned out the single RT-AX55U router gave me coverage for the whole house anyway. The router setup process was impressively easy. It even automatically upgraded it firmware to the latest version as part of the configuration process ... impressive. There's a comprehensive web browser interface or a phone app to manage the router too. Nice piece of kit ... money well spent.
I've gone through a lot of routers in my lifetime, and watched them become easier and easier to manage. This one ranks towards the top, with a few caveats.Pros:- Sleek, modern look.- Comes with both a mobile app and a browser-based setup page.- Includes utilities like a built-in Ookla speed test to help track down bottlenecks in your network- Plug-n-play on simpler networks- Wall- or desk- mountable- Fast!Cons:- The antennae seem fragile and are not replaceable- There doesn't seem to be a separate activity light for each port- Not all features are available through the app, and the documentation doesn't explain what can be found where. Took a bit of nowse to configure router to connect to iinet FTTN/HFC. Had to force my internet browser to accept insecure protocol (http rather than https) via ethernet connection to laptop because app wouldn't pick up WAN cable. Once logged in to QIS, router required a manual setting for isp profile in IPTV tab under LAN heading in advanced settings to enable a VLAN input. Once VID (VLAN ID) was set to 2 for iinet and applied, router connected to the internet then wireless networks could be set up.Love the sleek design. Good range and haven't have any problems with it dropping out
