I bought this router primarily for the VPN but after receiving the router and fiddling with it I am glad that I took the chance. It's super simple to setup and you can either have it connected to your main broadband router with the provided and have all your other gadgets connected to the transmitted 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz. The 2nd option is setup the WiFi only(Tip: separate 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz and use 5Ghz for TVs/gaming, have your broadband password ready and a username & password for router site(Assusrouter.com).The VPN is very very easy to setup and you can either enter the details manually or download winguard surfer info and upload. a good compact router for traveling, but when not traveling I tried to use it as part of my Aimesh system as a node and join it up with my RT-AX88U but just wouldn't join, tried so many times, so frustrating.

Bought this from Amazon and was initially pleasantly surprised. Good range and options via the GUI and app. Used as part of an AImesh with the option to use as a travel router if needed and at first it worked great. Then it started disconnecting from the network randomly and I found out from Asus that the warranty isn't even valid as Amazon have sold this outside the region it was meant for. Would have kept this if it wasn't for the random disconnects as it appears to be a good device and the problem might be fixed with a firmware update but the fact Amazon have shafted me means it's going back.
The Router appears to be a full Router with many features. It was a bit overwhelming for me at first. Many good reviews on youtube to get me going. I'm still trying to figure out the Wisp feature.
Definitely packed full of features, worth the purchase. I use it as a personal router connected to my phone via usb and ethernet to my dock for my laptop. Still can connect multiple devices with wifi as well at the same time. Havent tried the vpn setting yet but it is easy to use through the app. I just wish it had 5G connectivity but wifi 6e will do for now. Maybe a battery in the future would help. Powered via usb-c, might try a portable battery.

The old router is a no frills/just works out of the box, it's an old friend that's always there for ya. But it's not a travel modem, and I wanted to try asus with wisp mode(connects to public wifi signal and adds it's security. Well... this modem has a stiff learning curve and is not for the plug and play crowd. Once you have downloaded asus app to your phone and done the initial setup(takes an hour-use wpa2 for max compatibility) with your home network in wisp mode, switching to another network is not really outlined in the manual. Here it is: after you have connected with your cellphone through the app and have done initial setup, go to settings(gear), system settings, operation mode pub wifi mode wisp, then click on the listed network under wisp to change to a new network. Make sure you have the public wifi password. This will work, but when ever you switch a wifi network it seems to need to reboot or you need to reconnect your cell wifi to the asus router. This will be needed to be redone for every time you switch wifi's. I haven't found a way for it to save a list of past wifi's for wisp use(big bummer). This router is not something I felt like carrying with me on the go, I kept the modem in the hotel. My US based cell provider(tmob) gave a slow 256k connection in all the Asian countries I visited and this was just more convenient. Local sim card or pocket wifi devices were available at the airports. I recommend ordering a cheap10000 mah power bank from Anker, it provides plenty of power for a few hours and then some for use in the hotel. I didn't want to carry a power plug. The modem came with a velvet case which fits the modem, power bank and small usb to usb c power cable all in one. Over all because it's finicky and wont remember past wisp networks, except the one you last loaded, and a bit hard to learn to use (unless your a network pro) I give it three stars. Don't even think of trying to set up the free vpn it comes with unless you have a free Saturday, but the Aiprotect was easy (it required an Asus account). This router could use another lan port, it only has one wan and one lan.
