Sorry to put it this way but this laptop is quite buggy and incompatible with older software. I'm not positive if it's because of the Windows 11 Home Edition operating system or the preinstalled ASUS software. Whatever the case may be I still haven't made a lot of progress making this machine user friendly. This makes regular keyboard shortcut mapping almost impossible as there are not enough keys that I can map individually without having a conflict of the keys having been mapped without a reference as to what those keys control. And speaking of shortcuts and mapping why is it that I cannot find any reference to what buttons on my game controller do what when I have the Microsoft Xbox Bar running and my Xbox 360 game controller connected by Bluetooth? And this is the most disappointing issue I have of all and have no solution to it. I cannot control what programs run from the Nvidia graphics card and what ones run from the Intel integrated graphics. I get thousands of frames per second on some games and there's no way to slow it down. I feel so disappointed from the apparent lack of an adequate owners manual so I am able to work my way through theses endless and bothersome glitches. I hope there are fixes for all of this in the future but for now I cannot possibly recommend this particular laptop to anyone.

Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2 both show they’ll run minimum settings but the recommended settings claim the CPU isn’t up to par (although I suspect there are ways to overclock and make it work if you want to). All the other big titles you’d want are ready to go out of the box: Red Dead Redemption 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, GTA V, Hogwarts Legacy. It just seems like if you want to play games on the go this laptop is going to feast on whatever your favorite game is.Battery was a bit of an issue though. I took the laptop out of the box and per instructions I charged it for at least three hours (I think it was closer to five) then I powered it on and used it til it died. The default settings let the laptop run for just over three hours. I charged it up overnight back to 100% and tried again with brightness lowered to about half which got me an extra hour and change. This isn’t going to run your games on high settings very well if you’re away from an outlet so keep that in mind if longevity matters to you.The other big feature of this laptop is the military grade drop protection. At the price these laptops run I did NOT start tossing it off the roof of my house or even purposely dropping it to see if it breaks. Just know that the company made a claim, register your product to activate your warranty, and try not to ever need drop protection but know that it’s supposedly there just in case! It does everything else with such gusto I don’t really have cause to doubt the drop toughness but its just not worth pushing your luck to prove a point, ya know? If you need a gaming laptop I would recommend this over other gaming laptops which are “out of this world” as the pricing seems similar enough but the weight difference and ability to play more games out of the box make this more attractive to me.

Typing on this laptop feels pretty good, not my favorite but far from the worst, and it’s essentially a full-size keyboard layout including number pad and standard function keys. Also includes a few additional shortcut keys for volume, mic mute, and access to their “Armory” software.Performance – On battery power the 13620H is a bit anemic, not really packing much of a punch when you aren’t married to the power brick. It runs a peak of 45w when away from the wall but when plugged in it boosted to 4.9ghz and pulled 115w. Reducing this demand is a necessary evil for any hopes of halfway reasonable battery life, and heat management, but it is a noticeable difference in performance. Gamers recommended keeping a wall outlet nearby. It features 6 P-Cores with hyperthreading and 4 E-cores for a total of 16 threads. When plugged in it achieves multi-core performance like a 10900k desktop spec CPU with slightly better single core performance. The problem with all this? It runs hot and the default fan profile seems to be ok with that, barely ramping up in speed as you would expect to try and maintain performance. This results in a CPU that is frequently hitting the thermal limit which causes the CPU to reduce clock rates, so your 4.9ghz CPU is more typically running around 3.8-4ghz. The fans are quiet even at full blast, but it also didn’t seem to have a tremendous impact on the temps. The 4070 that is paired with it performs fine, it is an 80w mobile variant of the card with 8gb of GDDR6. Luckily with the efficiency of the 40 series it manages to stay outside of thermal throttling while pulling all 80w its allowed. The screen is a nice match for the setup at 144hz g-sync compatible 1080p with a web cam at the top. Connectivity is good, no dongle required, it offers 2x USB-A, 2x USB-C (1x being Thunderbolt 4), an HDMI, and an Ethernet port.Verdict – This laptop will play the latest and greatest games and run them well without making too much noise. With how much performance is reduced away from the wall plug however it feels more like a mobile desktop than a way to game away from home. If you are looking for something to double as work and game setup this isn’t the worst option to consider knowing you need to be plugged in/docked for best performance, if you are looking for something gaming specific, I think you can find something better.

There is a large glass touch pad that I found very smooth and fluid. There is no fingerprint reader for ID purposes.The ASUS TUF has a dedicated charging port with the charging brick included with the laptop. It also has a USB C/Thunderbolt 4 port, as well as a second USB C port that you can use for USB connectivity as well as providing a DisplayPort connection for a monitor that accepts DP connectivity. By the way, you can also charge your laptop through this port if you happen to be traveling and forget your dedicated charger, albeit at a slower rate. And you can use this port to power a USB dock with pass through charging to it and any peripherals attached to it. It also provides two USB A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, Ethernet port, HDMI port, lock port, and headphone/microphone port. The laptop will charge the 90 WH battery approximately from zero to 50% in 30 minutes with its normal dedicated charger.The laptop has a 13th Gen i7 CPU, WiFi 6, and 16 GB of DDR5 RAM along with 8 GB of RAM on the RTX 4070 dedicated graphics card.It also has twin fans designed in such a way to reduce noise while running and offers 4 exhaust vents. During my gaming the fan noise was there (they only spin up under heavy load), but it was not a distraction and wouldn’t be a bother to anyone sitting nearby.It has twin speakers with Dolby Atmos. I would say the sound can be turned up loud enough for most noisy background conditions and was crisp enough to hear conversations from videos without straining. Of course, like most laptops, bass was minimal or slightly above.For the hardware included, the ASUS TUF isn’t close to the heaviest laptops out there. It weighs 4.85 lbs. It’s not a light weight but if you need its power, the weight isn’t a real consideration.I used the ASUS TUF in my office where it powered multiple monitors, various peripherals while running a game with email, browser etc. open. The game I ran was Horizon Forbidden West and I was probably 2/3’s into the game so the graphics demand was high with all that was going on. I didn’t use G-sync because I wanted it to run at the highest frame rates it could so I could observe the quality of the game on the screen. While gaming it ran around 100 FPS normally with a few dips down to 80 and a number of rises to 120 FPS or more. The graphics quality was not compromised at all. There was no stuttering, momentary freezes, jittering or any other hiccups or hesitations. It ran smoothly and flawlessly the whole time. I was using a BT keyboard and gaming mouse during this as well.My conclusion is that if you want a laptop that will handle any graphics load available today at a reasonable price, the ASUS TUF will please you.

I generally put processors to its paces with complex database files and spreadsheets with macros and it performed extremely well, nearly on par to my desktop that cost considerably more. Over the weekend I put the TUF F15 through the paces with lots of gaming across sports, FPS, and racing games. Performance wise I had zero issues. My only complaints had to do with fan management.Graphics: The NVIDIA RTX 4070 GPU certainly delivered beautiful visuals. When Playing NFS I was really impressed with how detailed the background rendered. It’s been a minute since I broke that game out, but swear I saw more detail especially around the shading of the vehicles than I’ve noticed previously.Display: The 144Hz screen on the ASUS TUF F15 was amazing on fast-paced games like Battlefield and NFS. For the most part I noticed smooth motion with minimal screen tearing. The matte finish on the screen performed well even with modest light like in my office or even next to a window on a plane, but when attempting to play outside the detail was certainly lost. I might have preferred more nits for the TUF display.Connectivity: I was particularly impressed with the array of ports, including a Thunderbolt 4 port. This was handy for connecting my external hard drive for some light video editing of 4k footage. However, I encountered some issues when trying to connect my LG Ultrafine 5K monitor. Initially, it looks like it wanted to connect, but the connection was unstable, which was disappointing as I hoped to use this setup for professional tasks on my higher resolution monitor at home in addition to gaming on the go.Cooling and Noise: As a gaming geared system, heat management definitely takes priority over fan noise, and that was certainly the case here. There were multiple times during gameplay that the fans kicked into high gear. To its credit, the gameplay never stuttered, but I can’t say the noise wasn’t distracting.Conclusion: The ASUS TUF F15 is a strong contender in the portable gaming laptop market. It combines solid performance, great visuals, and good build quality in a semi-lightweight and stylish package. While it excels in gaming, professionals might find the gaming style and colorful keyboard to be less professional. Despite this, for anyone looking for a dependable and portable gaming laptop, the TUF F15 should definitely be considered.

The cable's limitations (4K at 60 Hz and 1440p at 120 Hz) led to some frame skipping. The reason I chose not to use an Ultra High speed 2.1 HDMI cable was because of my monitors 2.0 limitations. As someone new to PC gaming, my lack of experience with configuring settings for a gaming laptop to an external monitor probably played a role in this. Despite setting everything to Ultra, I couldn't achieve the expected performance without frame skipping. If the TUF gaming laptop unit came with a DisplayPort, I do believe it would have worked better with my external gaming monitor. For now, I will attribute the frame skipping to both the HDMI 2.0 cable and my inexperience with advanced settings.Audio and Cooling:The audio quality of the TUF Gaming F15 was a pleasant surprise. The high-res audio was immersive, with clear mid-range and higher register sounds, which isn't common in laptop speakers. The fans get a bit loud during intense gaming sessions, especially at 120 fps in Call of Duty, but noise-canceling headphones make this a non-issue.My Personal take:Even though I love tech, I'm very new to PC gaming. The keyboard, with its RGB backlighting and highlighted WASD keys (standard movement keys in many PC games), was comfortable and responsive, perfect for long gaming sessions. The F15 features various connectivity ports to accommodate various external devices. The left side features a power port, Ethernet, (1) HDMI, (2) USB-C (1 being a Thunderbolt 4), (1) USB-A, 3.5mm headphone jack. The right-side features (1) USB-A port. The front facing camera appears to only be 720p resolution which is less than ideal for a laptop in the 2024.Final Thoughts:The ASUS TUF Gaming F15 is a really good gaming laptop that offers great value for its price. It combines robust performance, a quality display, above average audio, and user-friendly software, making it a top choice for gamers. The only negatives mark against the device is the lack of DisplayPort connectivity and the 720p resolution front camera. That said, it's difficult to fault ASUS for knowing their target audience. TUF isn't just the model name, but a true representation of the build quality.First power on: Pretty standard experience here, getting Windows 11 updated, registering the product, connecting to Wi-Fi, etc. It took about half an hour total to get everything connected, registered, and updated to where I could actually start using the computer.Getting down to business: On the top row of buttons, which include speaker and microphone controls, the 4th button launches “Armoury Crate”, which has the best GUI for system control I have ever experienced. It displays in detail what each “Mode” does for Cooling, Noise Reduction, Energy Saving, GPU Performance, and CPU Performance. This GUI also offers complete backlit LED lights with multiple different functions to choose from. These functions are very user friendly and can be used to change the backlit keys to any color or rotate through a rainbow of colors. One of my favorite settings is “breathe”, where you choose a color and the keyboard fades in and out in that color. One thing you’ll want to immediately do as a gamer is set the refresh rate from the default 60hz to 144hz, which can be found under Display Settings/Advanced Display. This will greatly enhance game play especially, but even mundane tasks like resizing or moving a window around the screen is noticeably more fluid; 60hz feels downright choppy in comparison. Be sure to update the video drivers after getting your account set up with NVIDIA to further enhance the graphic experience.Constructive criticism: Of course, no computer is perfect, and this computer did indeed give me a couple things to grumble about: I could have done without Spotify and LinkedIn apps coming pre-installed; to me, less is more when it comes to preinstalled software. The video quality from the camera was only average, giving me 720p @ 30fps, although the microphone quality was first rate. When playing Rocket League, it would not record at HD quality while in game, but game play was absolutely amazing when not recording, substantially better than my prior gaming laptop this replaces. My prior gaming laptop had a fingerprint reader which this computer lacks, but I can live without that.Final verdict: This is an absolute BEAST of a laptop, especially for the price. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 is definitely the highlight, creating advantages while gaming due to the amazing graphic performance. The laptop remains cool on my lap thanks to the dual fans, which run nearly silently. The terabyte hard drive (926gb usable) offers plenty of storage. The backlit keyboard with the myriad of keyboard lighting options is both fun and practical. In short, I love it, and would enthusiastically recommend it to anyone, especially the performance hungry gamer.
