It has an aluminum frame which makes it more substantial than something that is all plastics. You have to expect compromises with something that is small and light weight. But you wouldn't want to carry around a standard half height 5.25 drive. It looks like it will be serviceable if I am careful using it.

The drive came with the Power2Go 8 burning software program. I loaded the program on my computer and tried using it to copy my own non-copy protected DVDs. Even though I loaded a blank DVD+R into the receiving drive the Power2Go program kept telling me that a CD and not a DVD was in the drive. There was no way of correcting this. At first my Mac Mini M1 did not seem to find the ZenDrive U9M or read my audio CD, but I had my CD in label down, like in my previous reader. I looked up the manual online, which said to put in CDs lable up. *Then* my Mac Mini found the ZenDrive and automatically opened the audio file! So Mac OS is compatable with ZenDrive after all.
This external DVD writer work just as described, plug in the cable and it spins up. It's feels quite robust when you hold in your hand. The only downside is the usb type connection, the description states it's USB C compatible which is true but not by using a USB C cable! The drive does not have a USB C socket but a USB micro A . The suppled adapter cable is required to connect it to your computer USB C Socket. This setup was a bit of pain as my USB C connector is at the rear of my computer case and I use long USB C to USB C cables to attach devices. I have no idea why Asus could not have a USB C socket on the device?
Purchased to use with Macbook Air mp2 and it plays my DVDs fine. There is a lag in replay after rewinding, about 10-20 seconds. So you have to be patient and just let it ride.The manual tells you this, but when using on an macbook, you cannot eject the DVD/CD by pressing the button on the Zen Drive. You have to search on your macbook for the eject function.The disc tray seems a bit flimsy only in that it isn't fully solid on the bottom, so I've been careful.Considered returning it for my $35 back, but the inconvenience of commuting to do that outweighed the relatively minor issues with it.
After having to return a similar LG product because it wouldn’t work with my Mac mini having Apple silicon- I tried this one. I haven’t burned anything yet, but I’ve copied some files. I can use software to open the drawer, but I have to manually close it. Can ASUS provide a firmware update for macOS Sonoma 14.1.2 (current version). I really don’t want to return this one either and go to yet another competitor. Thanks!
ASUS ZenDrive external 8X USB 2.0 drive is plug and play to install on PC. It supports audio CD, video CD, DVD+/-RW, DVD-ROM (SL/DL), DVD-RAM, DVD video. USB type-C and type-A cables are included. It comes with a CD for bundled software such as Nero BackitUp. It also says it supports Mac OS X 10.6 and above.So far I have not encountered any issues with the Drive and the 8X speed is good.
I bought a new computer in November and in April when I wanted to do our taxes, I discovered the disk drive did not work.So, I went to the Best Buy website and ordered this unit.It worked wonderfully !I had my taxes done in no time !!It even supplies two different hookup cables.This is very handy, otherwise you might run allaround trying to find the right cable.Very satisfied with it.
Yes, you can playback DVDs with this ASUS EXTERNAL CD/DVD writer. And while the tray is still empty, you can use the onscreen display to eject it, but when it’s actually loaded, that method doesn’t work, so it has to be manually ejected using a pin via the pinhole. Haven’t tried burning a disc with it yet, but it’s possible that it’s a similar maneuver. I’m only using this with my Mac mini having Apple silicon- so at least it works! You’d have to experiment with Mac versions of playback software for satisfactory results. So can ASUS update the firmware so that this is 100% operational with latest macOS? The unit comes with 2 cables; I’m using the USB-C.
