Even though this is a whole house mesh system, it is very easy even for a novice to set up out of the box. At the same time this is also a full function Networking router and access point with a myriad options for the more expert users to explore and customize. The Zen routers come in a fairly small unassuming set of packages (both are identical and can function as the router or the remote) and don't have the typical antennas poking out all over the place looking like some space ship just landed in your room. In spite of that I get remarkable signal strength out of each unit. I love WiFi but am a big advocate of hard wiring ethernet to every device I can and leaving the WiFi bandwidth for my mobile devices. So, I would always recommend using an ethernet backhaul net ... MoreEven though this is a whole house mesh system, it is very easy even for a novice to set up out of the box. This is where the 5GHz dedicated backhaul connection built in to these beauties comes in real handy. This is a tri-band router with 2.4 GHz and 2 different 5GHz bands. I chose this one so my devices all had 2.4 or 5GHz to choose from and I still had an entire 5GHz band I could dedicate to the backhaul between the units for a really fast connections from the different parts of the house. Bottom line is I highly recommend this unit for its capability, speed, robustness, versatility, security, Mesh which translates to coverage.

Purchased this after reading plenty of reviews stating that its got super great parental controls and time scheduling. Exactly what I was after. The mesh works flawlessly and I am happy with that. BUT be aware the time scheduling DOES NOT WORK CORRECTLY!!!! I set up time schedules for the kids devices of when they can have internet access. The time schedules during the week works correctly. But the schedules for the weekends does not work. On the router it shows that the devices should have internet access. But on the devices itself it shows no internet access. After contacting Asus and Geek squad it came out that this is a known issue thats been around since 2018. I am giving a poor rating on value, as it cost quite a bit and something as simple as time scheduling is not working. And the fact that its a known issue for such a ling time and not being resolved. Its easy to use and set up. Come on Asus how hard can it be….

On June 1, 2022 I had the ASUS ZenWiFi AX6600 Tri-band WiFi 6 Mesh System (XT8 2PK) installed at my home. My home is about 2400 sq. ft. The ASUS Mesh System replaced a Netgear dual band WiFi router. My Internet provider is Spectrum. With Spectrum Internet service I pay for 200Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload. However, with my Netgear WiFi router I was only receiving 41 Mbps download and 11 Mbps upload and at my office location (about 2 ft. from the Netgear router). After installing the ASUS ZenWiFi XT8 Mesh System in my home, I received 234 Mbps download and 12 Mbps upload at my office (about 2 ft. from the ASUS WiFi router). After installing the ASUS ZenWiFi XT8 Mesh System in my home, I received 234 Mbps download and 12 Mbps upload at my office (about 2 ft. from the ASUS WiFi router). That’s an unbelievable increase of 193 Mbps download at the same location. Another example of the performance with the ASUS ZenWiFi XT8 Mesh System was the speed difference I received in my garage. With the Netgear WiFi router and a WiFi 6 iPhone 11 Pro Max client\device, I received 7.2 Mbps download and 9.7 Mbps upload. However, with the ASUS ZenWiFi XT8 Mesh I received 230.8 Mbps download and 11.7 Mbps upload with the same device. That’s an amazing increase of 223.6 Mbps download with the ASUS ZenWiFi 6 Mesh System!!! In fact, with the iPhone 11 Pro Max a WiFi 6 device, I averaged 228.7 Mbps download and 11.4 Mbps upload with the ASUS ZenWiFi AX6600 Tri-band WiFi 6 Mesh System (XT8 2PK), throughout my home (2400 sq. ft.). With the Netgear dual band router and iPhone 11 Pro Max a WiFi 6 device, I averaged of 26.5 Mbps download and 9.9 Mbps upload. What a GREAT IMPROVEMENT!!! With the ASUS ZenWiFi XT8 Mesh System, I’m getting the bandwidth speeds (200 Mbps download, 11 Mbps upload) that I’m paying for from Spectrum (my Internet provider). However, with the Netgear WiFi router I averaging about 26.5 Mbps download and 9.9 Mbps upload. The ASUS ZenWiFi XT8 easily averaged over 228 Mbps download over the Netgear WiFi router. I’m thrilled with the purchase of my ASUS ZenWiFi AX6600 Tri-band WiFi 6 Mesh System (XT8 2PK). Before purchasing the ASUS ZenWiFi AX6600 Tri-band WiFi 6 Mesh System (XT8 2PK), I watched YouTube videos about the installation and performance of the ASUS ZenWiFi XT8 Mesh System and saw the performance increase these individuals reported. I never thought I would get the improves they received. However, after installing the ASUS ZenWiFi XT8 Mesh System and conducting speed tests throughout my home, I can honestly state that I received GREAT performance from the ASUS ZenWiFi XT8 Mesh System!!! I highly recommend the ASUS ZenWiFi AX6600 Tri-band WiFi 6 Mesh System (XT8 2PK)!!!
For those who stick to the simple streaming, web browsing, and gaming, the AX6600 is a fantastic mesh system. I personally replaced a google WiFi system with the AX6600, bringing my node count from 4 to 2. Connectivity is fast and consistent throughout the whole house in a way that the google WiFi couldn't provide. WiFi 6's benefits don't seem as large at this very moment due to the still low adoption of WiFi 6 among devices, but I imagine the future proofing being a major benefit in the future. That being said, and to be fair this can most likely be entirely pinned on AT&T not allowing bridge mode on their fiber modems, I find anything involving port forwarding to be an absolute nightmare. Some ports stay open, others will randomly decide if they want to be open, ... MoreFor those who stick to the simple streaming, web browsing, and gaming, the AX6600 is a fantastic mesh system. Some ports stay open, others will randomly decide if they want to be open, and some just refuse all together. On the topic of odd connectivity issues, my nest thermostat refused to connect properly after switching to the AX6600. After some googling, there is a widespread issue with nest thermostats and Asus' implementation of mesh. So after disabling the AIProtection and putting the thermostat on a guest network with mesh disabled, it started working again. In summary, the AX6600 is head and shoulders above my previous mesh network, and for most people's use cases, an incredible way to kiss connectivity problems in your home goodbye, so long as you either own your own modem, or you have very sharp google-fu.
Bought 2 of these for my inlaws home - long old tudor (about 6,000 -6,500 sq ft) with brick and stucco outside, plaster walls inside - and a open air patio between the two ends of the house. installed 1st box on 1st floor, and worked great - excellent service on the 1st floor, however marginal on the 2nd floor. waited 1 week and agreed that we should install on 2nd box on 2nd floor. installed, and signal did improve on the 2nd floor, but not as much as we hoped. 1st floor signal was up to 400Mbps. 2nd floor barely achieved 30Mbps. After installing 2nd box on 2nd floor, signal strength improved, but only to about 75Mbps. was expecting a diminished signal strength on 2nd floor, but with these Asus Mesh nodes, expected a much better signal strength on the 2nd floor. ... MoreBought 2 of these for my inlaws home - long old tudor (about 6,000 -6,500 sq ft) with brick and stucco outside, plaster walls inside - and a open air patio between the two ends of the house. installed 1st box on 1st floor, and worked great - excellent service on the 1st floor, however marginal on the 2nd floor. waited 1 week and agreed that we should install on 2nd box on 2nd floor. installed, and signal did improve on the 2nd floor, but not as much as we hoped. 1st floor signal was up to 400Mbps. 2nd floor barely achieved 30Mbps. I didn't even look at the instructions when i went back to install the 2nd set of 2 nodes. overall, about 30 - 45 minutes the 1st time, and an additional 15-20 minutes the 2nd week.
My macbook pro browser performance was inexplicably slow on startup and when I switched to tethered mode on my iPhone, it would work fine. I had time machine 5.2Ghz wifi in the living room, about 5 yards away. Something just wasn't working. ASUS ZenWifi resolved the issue. Out of the box, it worked immediately as a bridge, using an ethernet port on the node unit to plug in my compuler without using wifi., One of the nodes had out of date firmware. The Asus server timed out when I triggered the upgrade from the iPhone Asus Router app, so I downloaded the firmware from Asus on my mac. It recommended verifying the MD5 signature. I went to the web admin console from my browser, and I tried triggering the upgrade from the device again, and this time it worked fine, took about 15min, and I didn't have to check the md5 signature. It solved the problem of web browsers acting sluggishly on my macbook pro on startup.and across our mobile devices. Speedtest.net scores went from 9down 2up to 28down 9 up with better latency. It's hard to describe it but browser applications have a tendency to be very chatty in the background, and this is no longer causing issues like web pages that give up and die while loading. The device configures itself out of the box with a brief setup routine, although there is full access to various advanced configuration options. The iPhone app let's you see real time data transfer rates, put a name on every device that is connecting and, if I want, throttle bandwidth selectively on a device-by-device basis. The user experience is excellent compared to typical web based configuration consoles, and the important configuration process is completely automated. I chose this based on a product review in PC Magazine and reports of configuration challenges with other devices from Asus and other mesh wifi vendors.
Pros: Now that I've had my Asus XT8 twin pack set up and working for the past few weeks, here is my review. The equipment is extremely customisable, possibly a little too much if you are not technically capable of understanding the many varied options that can be changed. But once the app has been downloaded, and your router and node have been plugged in within a couple of metres of each other, it is very easy to set up and create a new network.I personally preferred to create and set up my network using the web browser via the Asus log in page. How you then choose to set up the router, whether in router mode, or Access Point mode, whether you use Smart Connect or separate your 2.4ghz and 5ghz channels, the choice is yours, and even 3 weeks later, I am still tweaking to optimise everything, so knowing what does, and doesn't work the best can be confusing.I'm not achieving the speeds I feel could be possible with my 1gig Virgin Broadband, and will be trying new things as time goes on. But this device is rock solid in stability, achieving 700-800mbps wirelessly with an Asus laptop in the same room as main router, 400-500mbps in the room next door through plaster walls. Handling 40+ devices from Google Minis to 4k security cameras, gaming PC's and work laptops, great option for busy households with lots of devices. It's a great router to upgrade your household with WiFi 6, with the advantage of the third channel offering dedicated backhaul to improve speeds. I tried to buy the ET8 version of this, offering WiFi 6E, but for whatever reason, Asus has not made this available in the UK, with the ET12 also difficult to find, so I do hope that I can upgrade and utilise these XT8's in a wider mesh network in the future when they become available. Cons: Make the ET8's available as these are an affordable WiFi 6E option that I would have chosen instead of the XT8.
Yes this appears to be a pretty expensive upgrade for me to upgrade a wireless Access Point. But when I changed from Comcast Xfinity to Verizon FiOS, for some reason an $80 router / wireless AP would not work at all. The ZenWiFi makes the install process super-easy. Install a smartphone app, make sure your Bluetooth is on (yes it uses both for the setup process). Plug both in to power, with one hardwired into your ethernet WLAN jack of your vendor-supplied router. Wait a few minutes. Then through the app you finish the setup steps, naming the network, assigning a password. And then BAM you are set. I live in a 3.7k sf house on 2 floors, with another 1.1k sf finished basement. The two units connect over a 5GHz 'backchannel', and are rock solid. I get 300/300 Mbps ... MoreYes this appears to be a pretty expensive upgrade for me to upgrade a wireless Access Point. The two units connect over a 5GHz 'backchannel', and are rock solid. I get 300/300 Mbps service in a lot of places where we hang out, and 150/150 further away (really no issues at all). Easy to install, solid in use (now for over a month), the remote unit is easy to hide in a central place, and no downside at all (other than the relatively high price in comparison to a 'regular wireless router'. Also easy to manage - the app is for installation, but you'll need to setup the AP function via a website interface (logging directly into the router). On that note, ASUS's interface is well thought-out and as good (if not better) than interfaces from TP-Link and Netgear, my latest two brands over the past 5 or 7 years. One last thing - as a router (which is not my use case) it has parental controls and other nice parental features that do not require a subscription, unlike other brands. If on the fence on this one, just 'buy once, cry once' - you won't regret it.
I have been a Netgear Orbi fan for years, however I have now had multiple terrible experiences with them forcing firmware "upgrades" which have created instability, dropouts and enormous frustration. This occurred again recently on my top of the line RBR850 WiFi 6 system that cost over $1800. I tried everything to reset and downgrade firmware (which then does a forced upgrade again overnight) - after hours wasted and huge disturbance in my work from home I gave up. Researched all the reviews and to my surprise Asus ZenWifi AX came out on top. Being a total Apple environment I was skeptical of a PC vendor who is unknown in the world of networking - but boy was I wrong! Researched all the reviews and to my surprise Asus ZenWifi AX came out on top. Being a total Apple environment I was skeptical of a PC vendor who is unknown in the world of networking - but boy was I wrong! Straight out of the box this system was a dream to set up and their iOS App is much better than Netgear’s, as is their web interface. Works perfectly with iPhone, iPad, M1 Mac’s etc. It was a bit problematic working out how to get VLAN setup right for my iiNet NBN HFC connection (the provided iiNet profile doesn’t work). But following instructions on iiNet website got it up and running perfectly: https://help.iinet.net.au/how-set-asus-rt-ac68u-nbn-hfc A two device system is delivering better speed in most of the house (challenging 3 level terrace) than the 4 x Orbi RBS850’s previously. Only downside is peak speed right next to the access point is not quite as high as Orbi (I’m on Gigabit super fast HFC and get about 700Mbits on Asus, vs. closer to 750 on Orbi). However the Orbi would drop off quickly and be terrible through walls etc. Whereas Asus is still getting 200Mbits in places where Orbi was a dead zone. Most importantly it is *stable* - no dropouts, reboots lost satellite connections, multiple reset and re-pair attempts and endless Orbi frustration. Sorry Netgear, your crown has been taken by the new upstart. Well done Asus (now *please* just don’t stuff it up with future buggy updates).
