Was questioning if a recording monitor was really necessary, but this has become an absolute staple of my field kit. Monitor is a perfect size and resolution with plenty of widgets to help record excellent focus and exposure. The SSD is fast and have not had any problems recording external so far. The batteries are efficient and last around 2.5 hours each, and this was with constantly leaving the monitor on between takes.Probably will never record internal again when I can record ProRes RAW externally to this with a free software download form Atomos. Pairs excellently with a Panasonic S1H.

When you start using it, it looks nice and fancy. They added support for wireless, cloud, different codec, but basic monitoring tools have bugs that mislead you. Eg zebra is off to ~5% - it start alerting sooner then zebra in camera or event then their own waveform, f-log monitoring with LUTS is a joke - levels handled incorrectly and output is clipped in shadows and highlights, when recording footage from Fuji cameras, files contain incorrect metadata. Company is definitely underinvesting into fixing the issues and focusing in adding new features to sell more devices. Buy, if you know what you do, have time to debug the issues or you don't care to much about what you see on your monitor. Otherwise consider alternatives.

This monitor has been a great asset to my videography. The accessory bundle is a MUST, especially for the price which was the same as the unit alone. You get the sunshade, 2 - 5200mah batts, extra wall charger, batt charger, and a screen protector. The travel case is phenomenal and sturdy. It wasn't necessary for me to get this model but I figured why not help future proof myself as I get better equipment. The display is very much visible even in direct sunlight (I record outdoor sports/hiking). I did not receive one that had the warm hue issue so that was great. The fan runs loud (The same volume as if you were gently blowing out a candle). so positioning it away from my mic was important. The menus are very easy to navigate and adjust. Being able to record in various codecs is very helpful. If you can afford all the additional accessories not in the bundle, or need external recording. This is perfect for you!Things to be aware of before purchasing:1. You MUST to have an ssd in order to update the firmware, retrieve your other recording codecs, and upload LUTs to it. There are no SD slots.2. If you want SDI Raw or H.265, you must buy those for $99 each.3. The monitors external recording playback is just that, playback. You cannot delete the recordings from the monitor. You must detach the ssd and delete them from a pc.4. If you want to record to the ssd only, use the on-screen record function. If you try to record internally onto a cameras SD card while also having the ssd attached, you will end up recording on both storages creating duplicates. If you want to record onto a cameras internal SD card only, then you need to remove the SSD off the monitor prior. (Just my experience, not sure if there's other ways to go about this)

I bought this because it was promoted as being capable of recording ProRes RAW from the Z Cam. Maybe it does but there's a maze of steps to get there and after two hours of reading FAQs and videos I'm still sorting it out.Plug it into the camera (HDMI) and you get a notice telling you to activate the ProRes RAW capability. To do this you need to register the device. This takes three numbers (serial number and two others hidden in the Atomos menu) and a few other details. Then you get to navigate their website for activation buttons and search for the right one(s). They have paid ones, random ones, and at the bottom when you click on Codecs they have DNx and ProRes RAW. But, are also told to update the firmware (for a device I just bought) because the activation won't work with this firmware. So, now I have to do that. Also, the tutorial video didn't cover this but did show how to link the menu from the Z Cam to the Atomos. But, you need a proprietary Atomos cable for it. It's out of stock everywhere. I found one at a shop in the UK and ordered it. Doesn't instill confidence that a key item for usability isn't available in the United States (even used). There was one for rent from Borrow Lenses at $15 per day. This is my first time using an Atomos device. I've heard good stuff. Never needed one before because cameras I've used in the past do proper internal recording but as anyone who has ever used a Z Cam knows, it's 75% amazing potential and 25% dystopian nightmare. Was hoping the Atomos would remedy this but just looks like it's adding to the frustration for now.I'll update this if I manage to get it working but for now it's a frustrating experience. Is it so hard to ship a unit that actually provides the features they market it for?
I used this to unlock NLOG and HLOG for my Nikon D780. This allows me to take advantage of the full dynamic range of my camera. The Ninja is user friendly, and if you have any struggles there is a plethora of YouTube videos covering it.This particular package fills the holes of everything you will need to (except for the HDMI to Micro HDMI cable I need for Nikon D780) start creating professional productions right away. The screen is bright and offers a larger and more accurate picture of what you will see when you get home to edit. I have just scratched the surface of what this can do, and I already feel like I have gotten my money's worth. The only con I see is that while filming in 96 degrees and relatively high humidity, it began to overheat in direct sunlight ... As of Ver 10.84 the HDMI input set to Compatibility Mode and HDMI 2.0 have never worked for me. I have to set it manually on HDMI 1.4 to get anything to pass through the recorder. Major inconvenience not to mention downright confusing.. as some HDMI sources such as MacBooks and Gaming Console are at HDMI 2.0 / 2.1Albeit this monitor was made primarily for on camera use. This monitor/recorder is downright finicky on other use-case scenario.CONS: HDMI 1.4/2.0, IO Limitation, and Software Compatibility issues.Be sure to check your hardware compatibility before purchase.
As many know, recording to SD cards can be problematic. I bought this unit so I could both redundantly capture footage from my camera as well as use the display as a much larger monitor. Other than having to find a way to mount it, it has performed very well so far. Be aware, that this does not come with the H.265 option - that is currently $99 extra, but not everyone's editor can use that format. There is an added cost to get a usb cable to read the files off of the SSD, but that is fairly inexpensive. I've barely scratched the surface of the features on this, but I'm liking it so far. If I recall, I think I can also mirror the displayed image left to right so that if you're in front of the camera, it acts more like a mirror and movement to the left or right seems ... I can record 4k 60p from the z cam e2-s6, monitor with a LUT or one of several different modes offered in monitor, use false color, waveform, vector scope, AND record prores raw! This little monitor gets a bad rap from inexperienced people who think any type of media and cable should work without a hitch. Cant get your monitor to recognize your camera? Try compatibility mode. Cant get your monitor to keep a signal while trying to output anything over 1080p 60? Its your cable, I promise, go with the Zilr 8k hdmi cable. Your SSD isnt working? Its probably too slow, take a look for approved drives. Hint WD Blue drives work. I would recommend this monitor/recorder to anyone who doesnt want to venture out of the $400 USD range but still wants quality gear. Also.if you ... I would recommend this monitor/recorder to anyone who doesnt want to venture out of the $400 USD range but still wants quality gear. Also.if you are using THE SAME POWER SOURCE youre using for your camera (anything with D/P-Tap) do this, in this order and reverse it when you change battery or turn everything off. Attach power source to device, doesnt matter if its camera or monitor first. Turn on camera, turn on monitor or vice versa. Only then is is ok to plug in your HDMI or SDI cable. Having one of those cables plugged in when you turn your devices on is a quick way to fry your HDMI or SDI port on your monitor, camera, or both. Be safer and also use a regulated D/P-Tap cable at the voltage your device requires. This will aid in a better signal to noise ratio in your footage AND possibly help keep your devices safe if you plug something in wrong or turn it on in the wrong order.
When it comes to cameras, photography, & videography I am what people would consider a noob. After getting my Canon R my brother in law recommended the Ninja V to increase the quality of my podcasts for YouTube. I am now filming high quality videos like I never thought possible. The Ninja sincerely increased my ability to create QUALITY products for the internet. I love it. It's easy to use. I watched 2 ten minute YouTube tutorials on it and I'm still learning about it every time I use it.I haven't gotten around the photography aspect of it yet but I will. Highly recommended for anybody trying to enhance the overall color, or 4k quality of a video!
I really love using this recording monitor with my Canon R5. I have no need for 8K raw, so I bought this standard model instead of the V+. What I like most is the ease of use: I only shoot once or twice a month, so Intuitive buttons and menu system are really important to me. I can use this without ever even looking at the manual. The overall build quality feels really good, and the battery and drive mounts are solid and secure. The brightness, image quality, and color rendition have been excellent for me. I am using the 8Sinn cage and hood - highly recommended. I can shoot 4K ProRes HQ 10-bit 4:2:2 in C-log3 all day long (until the drive is full), and nothing ever overheats. There are a few negatives: The fan does make a bit of noise. I think it could be a problem ... MoreI really love using this recording monitor with my Canon R5. I have no need for 8K raw, so I bought this standard model instead of the V+. I think it could be a problem if I were using camera-mounted microphones for interviews in quiet locations. But I do not use camera-mounted microphones, so it has not been a problem for me at all. And speaking of microphones, the audio input for this recorder is just not set-up for professional audio. The cheap consumer-grade 1/8" unbalanced input feeds some noisy preamps. I only occasionally use it for scratch audio to sync with the good audio from my MixPre-10 II. So the audio quality is average, but at this price, I did not expect pro audio anyway.Battery life has been fine, but most of the time I power both the camera and the Ninja using D-tap adapters off of an IDX V-mount battery. I can run all-day without any worry about battery life with this setup. Note that the description of this unit, specs say it has "D-tap power input". It does not. What it has is a dummy-battery with a specific barrel-connector, for which you can buy an accessory cable to connect to a D-tap battery. In the end, the resulting video quality is excellent, and I am really happy with the results I get for this price-point.
