I am not in a position to demo any gear so I do my research diligently and talk to a couple guys I know that have good gear. I Settled on the LCD-X. Email correspondence was excellent which is important to me since I hate being on the phone. Shipping was fast. Real fast! Loyal customers are appreciated even if you don't spend mega bucks. As far as the Audeze LCD-X's go... Out of the box sound is really good and it's strengths shine through rather quickly. I learned to do basic EQing and once applied, it was just - WOW! What an experience. I had to order Deknoi pads due to one ear touching the Fazer and it is annoying. Not an easy change on the Audeze but I knew that before hand. Would have changed them anyway. LCD X is heavy - let's get that out of the way. These are heavy planars and you will feel it. It caused some neck pain past the 2 hour mark for a couple of days and I guess it will take some time to get used to. I was used to Sundara's weight but this was a step up. Though these are heavy they get super comfortable and you can easily wear them for 4+ hours once you get used to it. The pads are really soft and form a great seal. The adjustment rods feel a bit loose but don't slip once adjusted and you wear it on the head. Overall these are well built with a good cable and I don't have many complaints apart from the weight. The sound is great - exactly what you would have read in other reviews. I have EQ'd them with Oratory EQ and love the sound over the stock sound. It enhances the timbre, sound stage and bass greatly - highly recommend EQ'ing them. I have it running with a Zen stack and I almost use half volume in 3rd gain setting. They are easy to power per specs - I've tested with my Fiio K3 and Qudelix5k so I know they don't need a lot of power but feels like they respond well to more power and sound great with Zen Can. Don't have a better dac/amp than that - may consider upgrading there to see if sound quality improves.Overall these are definitely an upgrade - I upgraded from Sennheiser HD660s and Hifiman Sundara - these feel like significant step ups with bass, detail retrieval, imaging and even soundstage. For music genres of EDM, rock, metal these will serve well as an endgame. I can't say that they're not great for vocals or classical as they seem better there too. Will have to listen to the competitors like Arya or Clear MG to know what these don't do well at but for now these are a great set of endgame planars.

From the perspective of a music producer and sound designer, these headphones really are excellent. I use them throughout my production process but mostly to check my final mixes on.The only reason I've given them 4 stars instead of 5 is because I can't wear them for more than an hour. They are quite heavy, they pick up rumbly noises if you move your head when not adjusted to fit tightly to your head, and the ear pads get quite warm after a while.I love them, but I still use my 17 year old Sennheiser HD600's more because I can wear those all day and not even notice. The LCD-X are my quality control headphone.Soncially the LCD-X are a little bit dry sounding, maybe even a bit dull, so they don't make things sound artificially magical, they're just really safe ... MoreFrom the perspective of a music producer and sound designer, these headphones really are excellent. Then you can 'enjoy' your music on a more musical pair of headphones.I say these are a just a tool to me, and a very good good one. But if I want to sit down and relax and listen to something for enjoyment, I'd pick something else.

If in doubt get the LCD-X 2021

Paired with the excellent sounding Schiit Gungnir Multibit DAC and Violectric V590 AMP it really sounds amazing. I use an EQ profile i got from Headphoneshow and switched to silver cable from Headgear; these two changes really elevated the sonic performance for me. If i had to nitpick the mid range tonality/timbre while good falls short of the high bar set by HD650 (which also sounds more cohesive and has the characteristics of a dynamic driver than i prefer overall) and the weight can be a bother (though it's comfortable to wear). The built quality is solid and i like the included carry case. Headphones have gotten expensive but this one IMO is actually worth the money (still need to factor in the price of higher end DAC and AMP though). LCD X Too even....? Review for those newer to the hobby

So couple of quick nit picks, the ear pads are now a hair too shallow- enough to be ever so mildly bothersome as my ears just touch the inside a bit now and then. Second, and this is honestly more of a preference issue- the cable is alas far too short for my uses. I wouldn't even mention this normally as stock cables should be tossed out most of the time, but the included single ended cable is actually surprisingly good- custom cable from Hart solved that minor quibble. Now the not necessarily great but not bad- the weight. Yeah, they are heavy. If they are heavy enough to cause you serious discomfort honestly you probably should be wearing them to build up your neck muscles(check with your physician obviously, and I'm like.. 25.6% joking with that comment). On to ... MoreSo couple of quick nit picks, the ear pads are now a hair too shallow- enough to be ever so mildly bothersome as my ears just touch the inside a bit now and then. Yeah, they are heavy. If they are heavy enough to cause you serious discomfort honestly you probably should be wearing them to build up your neck muscles(check with your physician obviously, and I'm like.. 25.6% joking with that comment). On to the sound. I've had several pair of headphones that have wowed me over the years, put them on fire up a good quality recording and been floored. These to a shocking degree had *almost* none of that. Took a bit of listening to figure out why, but I did. First time you hear say the 650s you notice that lush midrange, put on some 2Cs and that bass and warm smoothness just oozes out of its pores, the 800S you get this massive width and hyper detailed highs. All of those I like to throw some EQ at to get them to a happy spot, but prior to touching them with anything they all had those characteristics that stick with them even after you have them tailored to your tastes. These sounded a hair dark, just a hair, but otherwise unremarkable. At this point you are likely thinking how are these five star? I mentioned the bass on the 2Cs of an example as something that pops out and gives you some wow factor, the bass on these is even better and yet, it doesn't stand out unless you pay attention. That is the story across the spectrum. Any frequency range you focus on sounds spectacular, but perfectly in line with all the other ranges. I'd say the only notable gap is between vocals and instruments, vocals sound great, instruments sound on a different level. The notable exception for these standing out was when I put on some old school rock. AC/DC was..... wow, NOW we are talking. Across the board these just love rock. They don't sound bad on any genre I have tried, classical, jazz, metal, R&B, rap, techno/EDM, folk- but they are so utterly in their element when cranking out AC/DC, Led Zep, G&R etc.Soundstage seems quite small to me unless the recording is trying to sound open, think like in Alice in Chains 'Rooster', but it only seems to really open up when the recording is pushing the issue. Separation of instruments and vocals is spectacular and ability to locate the direction of sound origins is fantastic, but these are certainly closer to the Senn 600 family then something like the Arya or 800S. Detail retrieval is well ahead of anything I've heard in the $1200 and under market.I haven't seen anyone do this and I kind of wish they would so I'm going to throw out my very personal grades on how these do for each musical category.Rock- A+ Best I have heard for the genreRap B+ Very detailed bass and very clearJazz A- Fantastic instrument separation and detail, lack of staging leaves it lagging the very bestClassical B+ Similar to jazz but the lack of staging is even more of a hinderanceTechno/EDM A On some tracks best I've heard, never bad that I've witnessedR&B- B- When you have acoustical instruments overlaid with rich vocals you really lose something from the vocalsMetal A I wish there were more top tier quality recordings of metal albums these are very forgiving on poor recordings thoughPop/R&R B+ Similar issues with R&B but the more processed sound of the genre makes it less glaringThese grades are based against other headphones in this rough price range- I think the worst these cans could possibly do would still be better then any Apple/Beats type gear by miles.

Near perfect translator of music Audeze LCD-X 2021 creator package

So a few weeks ago I purchased a pair of Audeze LCD-X headphones basically sight unheard , there have been so many great reviews of these cans that I felt buying them while in stock was not much of a bad or worrisome process. I use a Fiio Mont Blanc and a iPhone as one source and even this rig does a splendid job . But I can only imagine what a great Dac Amp could add to this modern miracles. So if you love music every type of music these might be what you’re looking for , there not cheap, I opted for the 2021 creators box set with no regrets only the pleasure of a pure translator of amazing music . So if your looking for a headphone that’s at home in home or in the studio for mixing this is the one , enjoy !Sent from my iPad

From first opening the packaging and seeing the carry case of which my new headphones where housed I could tell they were a premium product just waiting to be let out and sing sweet music to my ears.I firstly connected them to my i phone to get a feel of the sound I’d eagerly waited to hear, but admittedly, I was rather unimpressed ! ( which I suppose is understandable with my source coming direct from a smart phone)I said to myself my B&W PX 7’s give out a better sound for a fraction of the cost. I then connected them to the home system which is a Technics set up… and wow that’s when they truly came alive !!The whole soundstage is just breathtaking, you can definitely hear parts in tracks that I can guarantee you’ve never heard before you listen to your music collection through them.I love genres from across the board… which ranges from electronica, to jazz, to rock, to classical and these headphones definitely hit the sweet spot for me on all I’ve mentioned. Also another point id like to touch upon is that in a lot of online reviews people mention the weight of them, and yes whilst they do feel quite heavy in the hand they honestly aren’t that bad at all; they’re so comfortable and I can wear them for hours at a time( and believe me I have ) so if you’re looking for a new premium pair of headphones and these are within your budget, I can honestly say you will not be disappointed in doing so and I wish you many hours of enjoyment if you do decide upon purchasing a pair.

I purchased the LCD-X headphones ($1199) in June of 2022. The button on the right wire clip got locked and stuck the first time I plugged them in. It still sticks. I used them four times mixing a folk singer mixing at a school. Other than those four times, they stayed in the box, in a humidity controlled studio. I took them out about a month ago (April 2023) to find the adjuster blocks on both sides had corroded (rusted) onto the shaft and the adjuster screw. That corrosion blemished the shaft piece on both sides. So for $1199 I have a faulty wire connector, rusted adjuster pieces and marred shafts on both sides. I don't know if the same alloy has been used internally, but I'm fearful it could be and could also be rusted. The thing I can't get over is that I used ... MoreI purchased the LCD-X headphones ($1199) in June of 2022. The button on the right wire clip got locked and stuck the first time I plugged them in. The thing I can't get over is that I used these 4 TIMES and they've been left in the box. Audeze acknowledged the problem and would not offer a return being that it was beyond 30 days (even with faulty pieces). If you are thinking of buying these, don't do it. Honestly, they do sound great. But I have many pairs of cheaper headphones and a lot of gear and nothing in this studio has ever rusted the the LCD-X's. And better companies have better return policies for faulty equipment.

SUPERB HEADPHONES

Audeze LCD-X headphones have gained impressive reviews in Hi Fi journals such as Stereophile and in consumer fora. Those reviews are justified. These are excellent transducers. I assessed them via an ATC pre amp, an Oppo 205 universal player and an Audiolab MDAC+ digital/analogue converter. I listened to a variety of media including hi resolution audio files, Blu Ray Audio Discs, SACD's, CD's some of which I had mastered myself ( therefore, I am aware of the sound of the original sources and vinyl records. In terms of musical genres, I included, symphonic, choral and chamber music, jazz and popular titles. The Audeze headphones displayed high order detail retrieval, accurate but not exaggerated imaging, timbral accuracy, even response across the frequency spectrum with extended high frequencies and deep bass, transparency, wide sound stage and faithful presentation of scale even when it was massive such as in the Berlioz Requiem. There was an unforced naturalness to their sonic presentation and perhaps most importantly, they were musically coherent as opposed to clinically analytical.Their quality was immediately apparent and there was further improvement over 50-75 hours of use.The stock headphone cable performs well and is probably sufficient for the needs of most. However, I did also try a Moon Audio Black Premium headphone cable and there were worthwhile gains in resolution, timbral saturation, high frequency richness, soundstage, transparency and musicality.Although they are expensive, for what these headphones achieve, their price is more than fair. They are robustly constructed and ultimately are something of a high end audio classic that perform brilliantly in all musical genres. Very strongly recommended.

Skip these as "audiophile" headphones.
28 December 2022

I can't attest to these for mixing/mastering, but these are terribly dull sounding headphones. I absolutely understand that you want something "transparent" for mixing/mastering, but even then, I personally couldn't see relying on these for that. For "audiophile" applications, spend a few hundred more and go with the ZMF Auteur headphones. The Auteur sound infinitely better than the LCD-X, and are far more comfortable as well. I swapped a bunch of gear in my chain at once, including phono stage, and added a headphone amp. I purchased the LCD-X at the exact same time, and thought that I was going to have to track down whatever was making my personal "reference" vinyl sound so lifeless. Turns out it was the LCD-X.
