3 to 4.5 stars. Have the active A5 bought new and after a few weeks, the built-in amplifier has quit his service. (Different volumes of the channels, humming and annoying, violent noise even at low volume) The support of Audioengine was under all sow (Because "Not bought in the U.S. but in Europe" > so no help or even warranty. Since the boxes have not sounded bad, I resorted to tools and converted them to passive (also because the originally installed amplifier to Frequency separation had installed a passive crossover, I thought to myself "more than completely ruin them can not") ... ... and now with a Class D amplifier + a Yamaha YSW subwoofer for the very deep bass excellent sound for my desk Mac

Recently my 20 year old Klipsch pro media 4.1 gave up and I set about to find a replacement. Looking at the usual suspects, Logitech, Bose etc, I wasn't finding the quality of build or power I was wanting. A few hours of searching the interweb and I came across Audioengine. I actually started out searching nearfield monitors in hopes of finding some SQ builds with ample power. I pulled the trigger on the HD3 units thinking 60 watts was plenty of power on my desk and also ordered the S8 sub. First off if packaging and warranty is any indication of how well these will perform, Im sold already. Build quality and fit & finish are exemplary.I am a bit of an audio snob so I do not accept any any fluff as a replacement for accurate sound ( at least to my ears). While I did ultimately return the HD3's and purchase the larger more powerful A5 model it was not for lack of sound quality. For most people the little HD3 has plenty of power and imaging was good, but... I feel the A5 is a better match for the S8 and I was correct. The imaging and sound stage is better than Ive heard from any bookshelf speaker, period. This is out of the box with no break in. I can hardly wait till the system is a few months old so I can really do some critical listening. I would also like to give props to Claire in customer service, we had some issues with a shipping address mix up and not to mention the ability to return the HD3 for a full refund, she got it handled, kept me informed and was genuinely pleasant to deal with. Ive been listening to some lossless audio tracks and this system gives me goosebumps. If you like your music tight, powerful, accurate and moving this setup will not disappoint! cheers guys and don't change a thing.......

I fully admit that when my last set of Audio Engine 5+ speakers began to fail, I looked at replacing them with passive speakers. I listened to many set ups and in the end, the Audio Engine speakers were once again the best option for me. Also, the customer service and support went a very long way in convincing me to stay with Audio Engine. Between the sound of the speakers and the support that backs them, I couldn't be happier with my decision to stay with Audio Engine.

I own a couple of Audioengine products including a A5+ speaker system, B2 Bluetooth and a D1 DAC. Unfortunately my A5+ left speaker had a low sound issue which required the assistance from customer service. The experience was seamless from beginning to end. Great, responsive and knowledgeable customer service representatives. I'm very happy by how my issue was resolved. I will always recommend Audioengine products. Thank you so much!!!
I purchased the A5+ powered speakers along with the S6-powered subwoofer. I was shocked at the clear sound and clean bass response. I had a Bose Acustamass set up on my computer for about 11 years. I thought it was the cat's meow. When I upgraded to a new computer I wanted to upgrade the sound system as well. I shopped around and came across Audioengine. Read reviews and decided to buy this set. I am totally blown away by the clear sound, and clean punchy bass, and the stereo separation is incredible. Sorry, Bose, you are no longer on my list of good sound equipment. I know what I like in sound and this is it.
This is one I picked up for my office. This is my 6th purchase and boy did it bomb. I custom installed the speakers in my office, threw the packaging away. After all, why would I save it…all my other purchases have been rock solid, but then disaster struck. The bluetooth drops; connects but doesn’t play. I have never seen anything as bad, but these are my first wi-fi speakers and I have never seen any brand fail this bad out of the box.
These speakers deliver a nice, detailed, and tightly-wound sound with highs and mids of exceptional clarity. The bass, however, is lacking to the point of almost non-existence. I personally could never use these speakers without an accompanying subwoofer.Luckily, these speakers are designed to be able to add one very easily. As standalone speakers, I prefer the sound of my comparably-priced Edifier S2000's by a considerable margin. However, those speakers will not accommodate an additional subwoofer. Once the sub is thrown into the mix, the A5+ setup really starts to shine!I do think these are a bit overpriced for the quality. For the same price as these, the Edifier S2000's come in beautiful wood cabinets, and have BT AptX 5.0 connectivity. These speakers on the other hand have NEITHER of these features. Why Audioengine would even bother selling a non-Bluetooth enabled speaker in 2021 is beyond me. I was VERY disappointed when I realized the ones I ordered were wired only.So now, I am going to have to pay extra ($100 more) to upgrade to the A5+ w/ AptX 5.0, but for now the black ones aren't even in stock. So I said to go ahead and send me their wood ("bamboo") cabinet ones instead. Imagine my shock when I was sent an invoice for $170! (instead of $100) That's when I found out that AE also charges an extra $70 for the natural wood cabinets. So, in order to get the same bluetooth functionality and wood cabinets that come standard on the Edifier S2000's (their comparable model), I have to pay an extra $170 for the A5+'s. That's just too much, so I'm just going to have to wait for the black Bluetooth-enabled ones to come back in stock. Hopefully soon!Despite my criticisms above, the A5+ Speaker System is still an outstanding set of bookshelf speakers, so please don't get the wrong idea! I just wanted to explain the 4 out of 5.One thing I LOVE about these speakers is the fact that they have true analog amplifiers, which really makes my vinyl sound amazing. As far as I know, these are the only analog powered speakers on the market, so I'm still happy with my choice. I just REALLY hope they get the ones I want back in stock soon...
My old A5s crashed and burned a few months ago, and I was a bit dismayed to fin that because of a design update to the electronics, the old A5s could not be fixed. But the Audioengine were apologetic and obliging. So I had the whole field of powered speakers to choose from again. Audioengine provided an incentive for me to buy another pair. So now I have the A5+, and they have picked up right where the old ones left off. Same tight highs. Same substantive bass. The imaging is right as I imagined it as well. Looking forward to breaking this pair in just as I had the old ones.
I have had the A5+ for several weeks now. They are attractive speakers and are solidly built. They are a little larger for desktop speakers but my desk is large so its fine. No rattling or extraneous sounds. All the sounds are there for music but the speakers unfortunately lack clarity especially mid to high. Base response is fine. I can hear the highs but the best way to describe it is muffled, not sharp. There is no sparkle. The lack of clarity makes it sometimes difficult to identify what instrument is playing the notes. Had I had a chance to demo these in person, I would not have purchased them. They are serviceable however.
These little speakers are truly incredible. I'm a former audiophile, had an $85K+ system, and these, small desktop, nearfield speakers hold their own in a way that's very impressive. I do not find I'm wanting anything more, I do have a sub integrated into my system and that brings it to another level, but even without they are very good. The way they vanish and create a remarkable seamless and wide soundstage is hard to believe. The only potential weakness is that they may be lacking a bit in detail, but my source is Spotify, routed through an AudioEngine D1 DAC, I'm not sure there's more detail to be had from this setup. What's most important, I find I enjoy listening to music (and Youtube) more than ever before at my computer. I have not used any of my headphones ... MoreThese little speakers are truly incredible. I have not used any of my headphones in months now and do not see myself going back. Having spent a lot of time in the ultra-hi end audio market it's tricky to find that sweet spot for speakers of being lively and enjoyable to listen to and warm enough to not be grating on poor recordings. Often speakers will bias one direction or the other, becoming either too clinical (harsh to listen to under anything other than ideal circumstances from recording to every piece of equipment before the speakers) or too romantic-sounding (which is nice at first, but ultimately boring and unexciting over time).I'm very VERY pleased with these wonderful little speakers. They even look nice!
