I've had a pair of HD3's for over a year, and continue to be completely satisfied. The bass response is better than I had expected from a speaker of its size. However, when the S6 was announced, I decided to give it a listen. It complements the HD3's very well in a small package relative to most subs. It rounds out the bottom end nicely and I think it's well worth the added expense. Highly recommended.

First of all I have a pair of HD3 and couldn't praise it much for its clarity across the audio spectrum, however it lacks those low end tones quite expected from a speaker of its size. I was looking for S8 for a very long period however couldn't justify the space it occupies under my desk and then I saw this guy which in my opinion has a very compact size perfectly matching my setup. The build quality is great and its size was perfect for my setup. However then comes one of the most important part - how it sounds. And in this regard it was a total failure for me. I was not able to get the expected bass response from this unit no matter how much I tune the crossover or place it in different locations. The bass was boomy and was lacking the detail. Listening to Patricia Barber wow this is what I've been missing. Really completes the sound. On my desktop with the A2+ speakers and the small sub under my desk complete sound. Really digging it. I have a $10k system in my family room, but I am not always in my family room, and during the evenings I am on my computer doing research, checking e-mails, watching Youtube, etc. These speakers and sub really sound great in my opinion. Better than headphones which I don't find comfortable for long listening periods. I had the larger sub but it was too large for my small office/bedroom. This 6-inch is all I need and the sound is full and rich. Even tried some rap with heavy bass and you know this small sub handled it.

I purchased the S6 because I have a small space for it under my desk, and it fits perfectly. I pair it with my HD3 speakers, and use the RCA inputs from the HD3s. It sounds great, and didn't take too long adjusting the crossover and volume of the sub to get it just right. I do use the "auto standby" mode, but one thing is that the signal going to the sub has to be loud enough to "wake" the sub, and normal, not-very-loud music doesn't usually trigger it to turn on. I could leave the sub just ON all the time, but I'm OK with the standby. I usually just bump the volume on the music for a second to get the sub active, then return to a normal volume. The sub is absolutely worth it, and I'm glad I got it. It's compact and provides exactly what I was looking for with my HD3s.
I bought this to complement a pair of A2+ speakers. We use them in a small den room. We play this system with our TV more than music, but the music aspect is important to me. This little sub does very well in this environment and the are, as you'd expect, a nice pairing with the A2's. Bass doesn't go super deep, but it plays with authority without being a one-note boomy. It fares well playing music of all types. I'd imagine it work extremely well in a desktop system playing music exclusively (with maybe a little gaming on the side). As long as you don't ask it to do too much (like deliver subterranean bass in a large room), the S6 is an excellent value. I honestly didn't expect a box this small and this inexpensive - and in a sealed enclosure no less - to sound this ... MoreI bought this to complement a pair of A2+ speakers. I bought these since the A2+ speakers drop off at about 130 Hz. The S6 will take you down to below 50 Hz. It's a great combination. I used an on-line sine wave generator to set the volume and crossover. Since the S6 is on my desktop behind the monitor, I put a .5" foam pad underneath the S6 so it wouldn't cause my desktop to resonate.
Picked this up as a supplement to the A2+ set that I have on my desk. For a smaller space with limited real estate, this compact sub was exactly what I needed to complete my little living environment. It sounds full even at lower volumes, which makes it great for not disturbing neighbors in an apartment complex. Would recommend to anyone who wants a quality audio experience with limited room available to them.
The small-but-mighty S6 Subwoofer is a perfect addition to the Audioengine HD3 speakers I've enjoyed for about six months. I listen to a lot of Classical music, some Jazz, and the Great American Songbook. The HD3s deliver a wonderful full sound all by themselves, but the S6 expands the sound into the lower register to bring the live sound of the concert hall into my home. We attend about 24 concerts by Detroit Symphony Orchestra each year and this setup delivers the same depth of sound we hear at the DSO. The S6 was easy to adjust to balance to the sound of the HD3s to deliver the whole range of sound I hear in the concert all. Audioengine delivers. a beautiful sound experience. Thanks, Dan DeRyckere
This isn’t a subwoofer for massive thumping action movie bass, but is great for a refined sound in a medium size room. I listen to jazz in a 16’ x 20’ room using an Audio Engine amplifier and small bookshelf speakers. Great sound in the room and open kitchen/dining area. I like the sealed enclosure sound over the thumpy ported woofer sound. Very happy with purchase!
I have had no prior experience with subwoofers prior to the purchase of the AudioEngine S6 subwoofer. That said, I am totally pleased with this subwoofer that I bought to complement my Audiongine A2+ speakers. I found it easy to set up and am extremely pleased with the sound which I consider clean. It revealed bass drums and low string bass notes that I did not even know existed on some of my recordings. Making the overall sound even more enjoyable was the fact that the low tones merged in a way with the A2+ speakers that did not call any specific attention to the subwoofer. Now, I can just sit back and enjoy the music.
