But if you need breast shields, these are a solid option. And I'd also like to commend you, mama, for your efforts to breastfeed your baby. I know it's not easy.I received these shields through the Stellar Products Testing Panel and these are my own honest thoughts and opinions.

Great for troubleshooting nursing issues
15 October 2020

My 3.5 month daughter has been breastfed since birth. I occasionally experience discomfort because she has a shallow latch, and I also have a forceful letdown, causing her to pop off my breast throughout the beginning of our nursing session. This is my first time trying a nipple shield and wish I would have discovered this sooner. The silicone is surprisingly thin, soft and pliable and it feels like a second skin allowing us to nurse in close contact. I did notice that it did move around a bit at first, but I re-read the instruction and added a bit of water to the back of the shields to allow for a better grip to my skin. My daughter now nurses with ease (without popping off my breast like she normally does), and I no longer experience any pain—success! My daughter now nurses with ease (without popping off my breast like she normally does), and I no longer experience any pain—success! I attribute both successes to the nipple shield.I often find it annoying to sterilize pacifiers and bottles with boiling water, but especially love that these nipple shields come with a sterilization case. Simply pop the nipple shields in the case with a little water and throw them in the microwave for 3 minutes, and they are sterilized! They held their shape very well and looked good as new. The case is nice because you can also throw them in your purse or diaper bag for extra protection when you are on the go.Tip: buy two sets. That way if you forget you re-sterilize after your first nursing session, you can quickly rotate the other one in.Thanks to the Stellar Product Testing Panel for providing me with these nipple shields. This is an item to add to your registry if you plan on breastfeeding, and can be a great first-resort when you are troubleshooting nursing with your little one.

Hands-free, comfortable nursing!
13 October 2020

I’m a mama with an 18-month-old toddler and a two-month-old infant. This is my second breastfeeding journey and I am no stranger to sore and occasionally cracked nipples. I was recently selected to test and review Philips Avent Nipple Shields with Storage Case, 2Pk, Medium, SCF153/03 by the Stellar Product Testing Panel.Having in the past been encouraged to “nurse through the pain” without product aids, I was pleasantly surprised how effective these nipple shields were for my baby to use. Upon our first use of these shields, I noticed several positive aspects regarding his latch: 1). he stayed latched to my breast longer, 2). he lost his latch less frequently if I moved or he fidgeted, and 3). the shape of the nipple shield guard appeared easy for him to re-latch ... MoreI’m a mama with an 18-month-old toddler and a two-month-old infant. Upon our first use of these shields, I noticed several positive aspects regarding his latch: 1). he stayed latched to my breast longer, 2). he lost his latch less frequently if I moved or he fidgeted, and 3). the shape of the nipple shield guard appeared easy for him to re-latch without much assistance from me. As a result of easy latching and more continuous latching, he also seemed less gassy after, a win for both of us!I’ve used these shields for two weeks now and have noticed several other benefits. My baby chokes less during feeds with this product - the shields seem to give him a more manageable and steady flow, allowing milk to pool in the bottom of the shield on the onset of letdown to be taken in as soon as he is ready. I am also able to have a near hands-free nursing session, which allows me to nurse my baby while also turning pages of a book for my toddler or helping her with a snack. I’ve used these shields during “prime time” nursing sessions, when both children are awake and needing attention. Having one hand free again has made these nursing sessions less contentious and mostly tear-free!The shields are made from a flexible material and are comfortable on both nipples. I have one nipple that is shaped slightly different from the other and my baby feeds differently from one as a result. The shields fit both nipples well. They are also small enough that my baby’s nose still rests against my breast.I also love how easy they are to clean! The microwaveable compact case is a parent’s dream, as I can pop the shields in the case and then in the microwave after use and they are disinfected in three minutes for the next nursing session. No more finding time for hand washing or waiting for the dishwasher cycle to complete, though these are also cleaning options for this product. This product has a few drawbacks as well. A secure seal to the nipple is difficult to maintain for the whole nursing session, and one side of the shield inevitably ends up sticking to the side of my baby’s face. While this isn’t uncomfortable for him, if there is extra milk pooled in the bottom of the nipple’s end, it has on occasion leaked out the bottom onto both of us. The instructions were also complicated and lengthy to read through, but I found it was worth reading these twice for a successful first try.Overall I love the flexibility this product has given me, allowing me take care of both my children simultaneously during nursing sessions. I love having an easy-to-use option for when my nipples are sore or cracked and I need the space these shields provide. I received these nipple shields from the Stellar Product Testing Panel and am so thankful to have been selected to review this product for other parents. As a result of my positive experience, I recently purchased an additional set as a baby shower gift for a first time mama and I hope she’ll benefit from these as well!

Might not work for everyone

I used nipple shields in the beginning of my nursing experience with both of my children. They are a good way of protecting the nipple during breastfeeding when it is sore and cracked. I have a 3 week old and we've tried to use these nipple shields several times. The shape/design of them are the best feature. There are two "wings" that adhere it to the breast verses some brands that go all the way around the breast. I like the two wings design much better because you can line up the wings (depending on how you hold your baby to nurse - ie football, cradle, etc.) so that they are touching the baby's cheeks as opposed to their nose and chin. I think the design allows for the baby to nurse more naturally, having direct contact to the breast to pull in more breast from ... MoreI used nipple shields in the beginning of my nursing experience with both of my children. I think the design allows for the baby to nurse more naturally, having direct contact to the breast to pull in more breast from the bottom. Plus, their nose doesn't have to be in contact with the rubber part of the shield, allowing better breathing. The nipple shield stayed on well during the nursing attempts despite having less surface area to adhere to the breast than other brands. However, the depth of the nipple and the width of the nipple portion of the shield did not work for me and my newborn. It fit my nipple well, but I found the depth and width to be too much for my newborn. Every attempt at using the shield resulted in him pulling off and gagging. That being said, it just didn't work for us. I'm sure these shields will work great for other moms and babies. It may even work better down the road, when my newborn is bigger, but I'll likely not need it to protect my nipples by then.Another positive about these shields is the carrying case that can also be used to sterilize the shields. I found that to be another advantage over other brands. Based on those two advantages, I would recommend these over other brands to moms looking to try nipple shields. Thanks to the Stellar Product Testing Panel for providing me with this nipple shields.

Nice Idea
13 October 2020

We received these nipple shields to try as part of the Stellar Product Testing Panel. I was really excited to try them, I've only used one other brand and style of shield with my other babies (they all had tongue ties). I was most excited about the shape allowing for more skin contact, but unfortunately the shape is probably what kept these from working for us. After my baby latched, instead of the shield staying on my breast it would flop onto her face, covering her cheeks. It didn't seem to bother her very much while nursing but she is at the age where she likes to stop and smile or chat every few swallows, and having the shield stuck to her cheeks made that more difficult and very messy. Instead of the shield sticking to me and collecting the drips during her breaks, it would come completely off, so then I would have to reposition it multiple times and my belly was drenched with milk. The Philips Avent shield did help reduce the pain of nursing, but not anymore than the shield I was using previously.I do like the case. It is very handy for carrying the shield in the diaper bag, and to have a place to put it at home that will help keep it away from my toddler's sticky fingers. I also like that you can use the case to sterilize the shield in your microwave, and the directions are etched into the case so you always know how to use it.In summary, a great design idea that didn't work too well for us, but hopefully works for others.

Nipple Shield with Notches for Nose and Chin.
15 October 2020

I tried these Philips Avent Nipple Shields with my 3 month old twins who have difficulty transferring milk from the breast. These nipple shields are made of a thin silicone similar to other nipple shields. The main difference with these is that they have a notch cut out at both the top and bottom where the baby's nose and chin go. The notches make the nipple shield look more rectangular than round. My twins were able to latch on easily to the nipple shield and I felt that the shield protected my nipple well. I liked the notches because I felt my babies had their chin and nose on my skin rather than the shield. They were comfortable for both me and my babies.I really liked the carrying case. I washed them with soap and water and then steamed them in a microwave steam bag which was very easy.Overall I liked these nipple shields and case but besides the 2 notches they are very similar to other nipple shields I have tried. Thanks to the Stellar Product Testing Panel for letting me try this nipple shield.

Okay but not great

From the initial look of these I was hopeful that they would work as well if not better than others, unfortunately that was not the case. While they were better than some others there is definitely room for improvement. The material of the Advent ones are thicker than average. I had a hard time getting them to stay on and stay on without leaking. Milk leaks under the sides too easily causing lose in suction.I do like that the top and bottom of the shields are lower, but combined with the thicker material milk ends up spilling out the bottom. Still comfortable to wear with no rubbing or skin irritation. The nipple size is fairly average. Might be slightly larger than others not necessarily best for brand new babies. The carrying case is a nice bonus. It never fails every little piece of dust or lint sticks to the material so the case prevents this from happing especially when on the go.I did not clean them in the microwave per say. I washed by hand with soapy water then sterilized in the microwave with other pump parts.Unfortunately nipple shields are not a one size fits all item and what works for one person may not work for the next. While they were not the best for myself personally I still highly recommend others trying as they may be exactly what you need!I was given this product by Stellar Parent Panel in return for my honest review and opinion.

These helped so much!

The first thing I do when using a new product is to sterilize it. I was so excited to see the case acts as a sterilizer itself. That is so helpful!I also used the case to keep one inside and let the other dry on top so I could rotate them for middle of the night feeding. When I first went to use them I was a bit skeptical since this is my second child and I couldn't use shields at all with my first. This child was just under 3 weeks old when I started to use these and I had already tried another brand that didn't help at all. Well these did! There was no pain at all and this was after I'd bled from that nipple just 24 hours before. I was shocked and I'm in such a state of relief. It's so helpful to be able to use these to heal. There was no pain at all and this was after I'd bled from that nipple just 24 hours before. I was shocked and I'm in such a state of relief. It's so helpful to be able to use these to heal. I was able to use these for just over a day and when everything healed I went back to nursing without it. I'm still getting sore but it's nice to know if it gets bad again, I'll have a way to prevent it from getting THAT bad. These looked big when I took them out and I wondered if my baby would be able to latch on them. It was no problem at all for the baby who latched easier than we were doing without them. I think that might be why it worked so well too, was that it really took pressure off of my nipple. It was easy to hold in place but the only trouble I had with it was that it leaked from underneath it, mostly at the end I think. I have had other ones leak before, so it may be how I seal it or remove it but having a cloth ready at the end helped that. I was not sure if it was the 2 open sides that caused a bit more leaking but I also thought having the 2 open sides was nice since it allowed more skin contact and might have been what helped my baby latch so easily.I hope not to need this for long but it sure helped right when I needed it! I will recommend the brand highly to friends. Thanks to the weeSpring Parent Panel for providing me with this product to test and review!
