A great bundle purchase for either the beginning or experienced hiker, hunter or bushcrafter. Bahco Combo is a good basic quality knife and saw both made with swedish steels The knife is a nicely done Mora style knife with a stainless steel blade very sharp from the factory. I've plenty of experience with their other blades and this one shouldn't disappoint. The folding saw has a push button lock that automatically engages in both the open and closed positions. The latter being great when storing it inside either a regular pack or a emergency get home bag that spends a lot of time bouncing around in a vehicle. I've not put the saw to use but from experience cutting firewood and trimming brush and trees I'd be shocked if it was found wanting in cutting chores suited ... Having looked at the cheaper, and more expensive options, I chose the Laplander based on a number of things. Its compact, the locking mechanism is out of the way but easily operated by a single gloved hand. It cuts on both strokes and this is useful when cutting in awkward positions. I have a Silky and as they only cut on the pull stroke it limits its flexibility. I use my saw for bushcraft so the coating gets abuse. This is my second as my first one has been adopted by my missus and her one still has 95% of the coating after 3 years hard use. If need be the teeth can be sharpened, though I never had to and the teeth have always been sharp. The locking mechanism locks the blade in both open and close positions, something the Silky doesn't do as only locks in the ... The Silky katana is a great saw and I do use it, but the Laplander is more adaptable and secure.

The Bahco Laplander looks lika a very large folding knife, but is indeed a saw. The teeth are very aggressive and cuts in both directions. One sawblade similar, that I have tested, is the victorinox folding knifes sawblade. This is similar in style and teeth and effectivness, but much larger. Also this is is a coated blade and it also have a locking mechanism for the blade. However the bulk and weight is very manageable and it can for instance travel in your Fjllrven trousers side leg pocket without hassle. It fills an excellent spot inbetween the small victorinox saw and the large bowsaw. I recommend to exchange the rawhide cord to one of similar length that is of bright color so its easy to find if misplaced. The cord also works as a sort of handguard if used so ... I found this for an excellent ebay price, half of what I could find it for around my parts, so I actually got 2, and keep 1 as a spare for the future. Good luck out in the bush and woods! I used this saw in a time of great need. While camping with my family this past weekend I decided it was time to do the days wood chopping for our nightly fire. It was going well, until I came across the Andre The Giant of logs. After about 20 minutes of trying to split this knot (and with an increasing larger crowd of lookie loo’s gathering around to watch), I needed to change my game plan. And it hit me: My Laplander was in the jeep. I pulled it out to low level snickering across the gathering crowd. I pressed the button that activates the closed locking position, and as I did the snickering changed to laughter. The blade opened and locked. I was ready. I took a battle stance with Andre just in front of me. In no time, my laughter inducing blade cut through the ... A cheer heard from across the campground erupted. Victory was mine.5 stars.
Cant beat the Bahco saw and knife combo! $27 with free shipping cant go wrong! I have seen just the Laplander saw go for over $30 alone. The saw is well built with a button lock to open and close, and aside from a very minor bit of play in the blade, the lock feels quite secure. The handle is slightly waisted and feels great in the hand. Aggressive teeth are sharp and sturdy. I have no doubt it will perform well. What more can i say its a Bahco Laplander! The mora knife is basically a freebee at this price and as such it is very impressive. First thing I noticed after pulling it from the sheath is that this thing is razor sharp. And I mean RAZOR SHARP. Shaved the hair down my arm with zero effort. Usually takes me an hour so of careful honing to grind away the ... And I mean RAZOR SHARP. Shaved the hair down my arm with zero effort. Usually takes me an hour so of careful honing to grind away the milling marks to get production knives as sharp as I like them but this one came out of the box ready to go. Rubber grip is comfortable and sure, plastic sheath has belt clip that is nice and thick so it wont break as easily as some, and drain hole at the tip. Only complaint about the knife (and this is just me whining) is that the spine has been barely rounded off. I would prefer a crisp 90 degrees for striking a ferro rod, but a few minutes on a stone will fix it. IMHO this is a great deal. Don't hesitate!
I'm an assistant scoutmaster at our local Boy Scout troop and we use these tools to train our back country scouts. Needless to say teenage boys can be pretty hard on equipment, but they seem to hold up pretty well. The saw blade thickness vs length is about right to resist kinks and bends and is a relatively useful cutting tool up to about 4" wood. The knife blade is stainless steel Scandi-ground and is good and sharp right out of the package. The knife does not have a full tang and I don't recommend heavy batoning (we use an axe instead), I have taken both items hunting with me and find that they are also quite effective game processing tools. I've quartered about a dozen elk with the knife and I can personally attest that it is up to that task.
I own several of the Laplanders and several Silkys. I think that the Laplander performs just as well as the Silkys, especially since it cuts on the push and pull. For its size, it is light and far out performs other saws out there. I have also owed various Carona and Fiskar saws. The Laplander outperforms those as well. You wont be disappointed.
This folding saw was recommended by several people online so I thought I'd give it a try, they said the black coating was a low friction coating so the first few cuts wouldn't be too great until the coating wears off the teeth, but then it would be like a hot knife through butter. My first test was on a length of 2 inch by 1 inch beech, which is a very hard wood, and it flew through. I'm looking forward to seeing how it deals with normal use on softer woods after the low friction coating wears off the teeth. Another good feature about the Bahco 396 Laplander is the way the blade locks closed as well as locking open, a good safety feature for those with small kids. Another good feature about the Bahco 396 Laplander is the way the blade locks closed as well as locking open, a good safety feature for those with small kids. After using this saw a few times, I wouldn't even consider any other folding saw, there is a reason this version is issued to NATO, which in its self is a good indication of quality. It fits in a pocket nicely, has a comfortable soft grip handle and it's also light weight. As far as downsides, I'm struggling to find anything at all, maybe (and this is just a personal preference) but maybe the blade could be a little bit thicker, it's only about a milimetre thick but highly unlikely to jam and bend on the forward stroke. All in all, an excellent tool for anyone from gardeners to outdoor survival experts, highly recommended.
This is my second Laplander. No, I did not go through the first one (I do not think you can do that) my first one was "borrowed" and never seen again. I think he liked it so much he could not get himself to return it. Enjoy it mate it is indeed the nicest little saw you can have in your kit!So I am sold on this saw....Now to the important point:I am sold on COE.- Fast service, it seems I was just wishing to have another Laplander and and the courier knocked at my door with a COE box for me! :-)- Nice packaging a little box with the saw and a bit of paracord I ordered. Snug and safe. :-)- Receipt in the box with a personalized handwritten thank you note, a smiley face and a Maple leaf Canadian stamp. :-)Way to go guys and gals at COE!a.
Bought this last year and got some use out of it at a couple beach bonfires trimming up some longer branches. Very easy to use, blade was well sharp and flexible enough to be forgiving for an inexperienced user such as me. Folds up securely for transport and weighs so little there's no excuse for not having one in your backpack on a hike.
