I'm sure that the large bean hopper that comes with the Baratza Encore is fine for people who want to fill it up and just brew one type of coffee every day. But, I generally make a few cups of coffee a day and alternate through three or four different beans that I keep on-hand. This smaller hopper is great for my purposes. It easily holds the 30g of beans that I need to brew two cups at a time. The top of the hopper is perfect for measuring the beans on my scale, as well.

I recently upgraded to a Virtuoso+ grinder and was immediately plagued by intermittent popcorning. While Googling for solutions to this I discovered the Baratza Single Dose Hopper (SDH) so I ordered one in black from iDrinkCoffee and received it right away. Kudos for fast shipping, guys! The SDH is trivial to install. It would also be trivial to swap back to the stock cone if desired, say if you are grinding more than the 60g capacity of the SDH, perhaps for a batch brew. When I bought the Virtuoso+ I was fully prepared to use the stock cone but I have to say that the SDH really simplifies my single-dosing workflow, which I’m fully committed to because I always have two or three unique beans on the go to switch between. The SDH improves the already excellent grind ... MoreI recently upgraded to a Virtuoso+ grinder and was immediately plagued by intermittent popcorning. The unadvertised bonus is that lifting and pushing on the hopper post-grind produces a bellows effect that pushes any residual coffee down into the bin. This bellows-like effect is very welcome and turns the Virtuoso+ into a zero-retention grinder for me.Finally, the SDH does seem to muffle the grinder's noise a little bit. Not a huge difference but any little less noise is a good thing.Downsides? None, really, unless you count the 60 gram max capacity. That doesn't bother me since 99% of the time I'm grinding 17 or 18 grams of beans for a single V60 brew for an 8 ounce cup for me.I really have to congratulate Baratza for pricing this device so low too. It's practically a give-away at $32 Can considering the prices of so much coffee gear.

This thing is awesome! It makes the Encore quieter and much easier to single dose. The only disappointment comes from the rubber that the lid is made of. It attracts dust very easily and can get pretty dirty. When I received it, it must have been in the warehouse for a while because it was almost white from dust.Apart from that - best Encore purchase!

The reduced size is good for single dosing although this alone probably won't justify the price for most unless they have little overhead space for their grinder. The largest incentive for myself was the ability to weight beans in the lid which is a large convenience factor in my workflow to prepare a cup of coffee. I encountered this after installing the single dose hopper and also after performing the burr upgrade on my Encore, so I'm not sure if this issue is the result solely of the hopper, of the burr upgrade, or both.
I bought the Baratza single-dose hopper for two reasons. Firstly, to reduce popcorning. Secondly, to use as a bellows to get any leftover grounds out of the burr chamber.Unfortunately the product doesn't really deliver on either front. A lot of popcorning still occurred (it may have been slightly less, but it's hard to tell given that the hopper is opaque), and because the material is so rigid it can only push a tiny amount of air through the burr chamber.I have since reverted back to the original Encore hopper, and I would only recommend buying this single-dose one if you much prefer the aesthetics of it.
I'm glad I bought this item. It's very convenient to use instead of weighing and pouring beans into the large volume hopper that comes with the Baratza grinder. It's also much easier to handle and clean than the original hopper. To me it was worth the extra expense for the convenience that the single dose hopper provides. Would definitely recommend.
Everybody loves the Encore, but it definitely needs some updates to fit with today’s specialty coffee enthusiasts. This is definitely a key part that makes workflow easier. It works like a bellows if you take it on and off a couple times after you grind. Also the cap weighs exactly 50 g, so if you use it to weigh your beans, even if you forget to tare, you can easily figure out your dose weight. My only issue is that it does feel cheap. Of course, it is cheap. But I would have paid a few more bucks for a better quality material.
Bought this for the Baratza Encore. Works well for me, I like a decaf in the evening. Often have too much coffee on hand! so I can switch between beans easily. The lid works great as a dosing cup, I like the guard inside the hopper more than the stock hopper. I find you get less pop-corning of the beans. I do find this hopper is laughably small on top of the encore, I prefer the look of the stock. However, function of beauty. I would recommend this a worthwhile upgrade, if you’re looking to single dose.
This works great as a single dosing hopper and to eliminate height for under cabinet use. However, Baratza should make as add-on or better yet included in price, a bellow to get every bit of weight out. This is why I give only a 3. The work around is to put full 60 gram in hopper and use timer to get just what you need per grind. But ultimately, without a bellows to blow out grind chute, you'll still need to purge if you change grind size or change beans. I feel that Baratza as an old established grinder company is behind the times in respect to single dosing and zero retention technology and may be a bit stubborn when it comes to modern-day workflow requirements. Extremely tight fit on the Vario+. I initially thought it didn't fit at all, but it finally clicked into place. It works well for single dosing. Unlike the stock hopper, this hopper makes retention when single dosing a non-issue. Although it doesn't have a bellows, pumping the lid up and down a few times during grinding does a good job of pushing all of the grounds out of the grinder.
