Unbelievable amount of kit in a small package! I was actually looking more for the rackmount XR18 version of this excellent piece of equipment, but having now had this for a short while, I'm glad that I ended up with the desktop format X18 version instead. I particularly like the fact that it has a convenient parking place for a control tablet, and have since acquired a carefully chosen 12" tablet that fits like a glove. I'm also particularly impressed with the quality of construction. The casing is rock solid steel and the whole thing feels very sturdy. It weighs more than you expect. Having downloaded the X-Air edit app from the Behringer website, I found this very easy to get to grips with and amazing in terms of the level of control available for the X18. Really impressed. Overall, the X18 is a stunning piece of kit, fabulous value for money and represents a massive step up from humping around a big analogue desk, plus a rack loaded with FX units all rigged up with zillions of patch cables.

Tested already recording 12 inputs via USB in addition to basic live setup (2 vox, 2 guitars, bass and drums). Everything worked great out of the box. Very easy to operate. Tested with Windows, Android, iOS. Mic preamps have also good quality for recording dynamic mics, line and even phantom-required condenser mics. Haven't A/B tested between phantom and tube preamp (goldmike) side by side yet but first impression was that the preamp did not sound too cold at least when using small condenser overhead mics (matched Neumann km187). I personally prefer warm tube-like sounds with precense when recordingwith consenser mics and the result was satisfying enough. Maybe when recording vocals it would be better to use more warmer preamp.

Firstly, no you do not get the ipad with it shown in the photos, you have to supply your own (or android tablet or PC) . Excellent piece of kit. Allows me to mix FOH and , and monitor(s) mix with inbuilt graphic EQ and real time analyser. Then at the same time I can send 16 channels (or 18 if you include the aux stereo pair) straight into Reaper on the same laptop running the X18 mixer surface. I can access it using ethernet cable or wifi (but not both at the same time). Highly recommend if you don't want any more channels. Next step up would be the X32 at 3 or 4 times the price of the X18. Inbuilt fx seem solid. The unit itself seems solid too, and is compact enough to lug around to band rehearsals. Very happy customer here.

Great mobility and flexibility!!

I purchased this mixer to replace a mostly analog system that had a combined weight of around 60lbs. This mixer does everything my analog system did, plus TONS MORE at a quarter of the weight. BUT one needs to have a moderate amount of sound engineering knowledge to understand the routing, dynamics, and bussing. Beginners will want to commit a moderate chunk of time to watching the tutorial videos found on YouTube. This really isn't a mixer for someone that just wants to plug and play. It can be done, but the sound quality will definitely be lacking. This can cause some to blame the mixer. 9.5 times out of 10, the problem with a mix will be the operators error or lack of familiarity with the system. Given its complexity and lack of knobs and faders at the fingertips, this mixer can be sometimes frustrating to use in a live show emergency. (insert Golem voice) Nasty ol' feedsbacks!! If you're running this via a tablet or small screened laptop, you'll have to learn to quickly navigate menus and sub screens to fix the problem. But, that's the trade one makes for this kind of flexibility and portability. For me, these are top priorities. Plan on having longer sound checks. Perhaps the best compromise would be a large touch screen monitor laid on its back. This would offer all thenecessary screen real estate to have the most important elements of the mixer available at the fingertips. Once the foundation of the mix is set at FOH, the sound guy can grab a tablet and wander around the audience area to fine tune. Or, leave the mixer at the stage and do the whole job via tablet. Your choice! It's great to have that choice. With built in WiFi, this mixer offers great versatility. If this mixer will be used to run a show with a large audience, keep in mind that there may be a lot of devices polluting the 2.4ghz channels. If you start noticing a lot of lag in the screen response, or dropped connection, outside interference is the cause. The built in WiFi uses the 2.4ghz band and has very limited range and security. This makes it susceptible to interference when competing devices are present. This includes some wireless mics and instrument packs. If you're using WiFi along with wireless packs, make sure to set everything on different channels. I use a WiFi scanner app on my laptop to show me the least polluted channel available. The best fix in this situation is to use a stand alone WiFi router that works on 5ghz band. Set the mixer's network switch to Ethernet and plug into the router directly. Or, set to WiFi Client and connect to an existing WiFi network. This will allow the connection between the mixer and your control device (if it works on 5ghz) to be cleaner and more reliable. As an added bonus, you'll have greater range and security. I use a Line 6 wireless mic and instrument pack. It took me a little while to figure out why the guitar kept cutting out, and my iPad kept losing connection. Turns out I had the mixer and instrument pack both on channel 6. They were competing and interfering with each other. See...operator error, not the mixer's fault. I've heard of some complaining about X-18's built-in WiFi being cheap and useless. They were probably unaware of the 2.4ghz conflicts they had going on. Behringer should discuss this in their manual. This mixer was the perfect solution for all my musical needs/wants. I've been wanting to make multitrack recordings of my live shows, AND be able to easily have bumper music ready to go. This is all done with a single USB cord between the mixer and my MacBook. Simultaneously, all in the same laptop, I can control the mix, record to a DAW, and send iTunes music to separate channels in the mixer. This can be done on the console at my church, but I can do this at a fraction of the size, weight, and cost. Another reason the X-18 is the perfect unit for me is that I was looking for a way to record in my home studio. No need to purchase an expensive 3 or 4 channel interface. I now have an 18 channel interface. The X-18 is small enough to set up on a computer desk and record directly into Garage Band. Or whatever DAW you choose to use. As is typical with all my experiences with Behringer products, the manual will leave you scratching your head. They have improved a bit since Midas bought them, but YouTube to the rescue...again! There are plenty of X-Touch (mixer app) specific videos available from Behringer and other contributors. These will give you the basic nuts and bolts of the software, but to really learn how to properly use dynamics, EQ's, FX, etc, you'll have to find general sound engineering tutorials. Be careful though, if you have any nerd blood flowing in you, you'll get hooked! This mere "necessary evil" of having to amplify your band's sound for an audience will quickly become a passion for tweaking every setting the X-18/XR-18 offers to squeeze out the best sounding music your speakers will deliver.

Couple of topics to mention here - first, the product. I was excited to find a digital mixer with enough channels to more than address our needs and at an affordable price. And, seeing a level 1 available, I jumped on it since I've had great success with Musicians Friend's level 1 rated merchandise in the past. Hooked the mixer up to learn it at the house before hitting the road and was pleased with it's features, sound and flexibility. That wasn't the case on it's maiden use during it's first show. Worked as designed during the first set; however, midway through the break, we heard an ear piercing shrill from the house PA. I pulled down all the faders and eventually had to shut down the mixer to get rid of the noise. Worked as designed during the first set; however, midway through the break, we heard an ear piercing shrill from the house PA. I pulled down all the faders and eventually had to shut down the mixer to get rid of the noise. Without a lot of time, we quickly replaced the X18 with our old mixer (brought it just in case) and was able to finish the night without any more interruptions. The next day, I fiddled with the X18 and it continued to make noise through the outputs and the headphones, so I called Musicians Friend from the road and they graciously apologized for the trouble and said to return the X18 and they would send me a new replacement. Here's the second topic - after 2 weeks, the replacement arrived and it wasn't new, rather it was labeled as another level 1. That wasn't unreasonable, but the product box was badly crushed (not the shipping box, it was fine) and their were multiple cuts on the box where previous shipping labels had been removed. Not ready to take another questionable piece of equipment on the road, I contacted Musicians Friend and they allowed me to return the replacement less their original shipping and with me covering the shipping back to them. So, at the end of the day, I'm out shipping costs with no X18. It is possible that the replacement may have worked okay, but didn't want to risk another event like before. Our clients pay us to provide exceptional entertainment and we have to rely on our equipment to be stable.

Given a choice above of 'Yes' or 'No' in answer to 'Is it easy to use?" I had to go for 'Yes' as you can use it at a fairly simple level and you'll be fine...but there is so much more this thing can do. I'm still finding out new features and methods of achieving things weeks after buying it (and I'm reasonably experienced with mixers and effects). So I guess that also explains the 'Yes' in answer to 'Is it versatile?'. Definitely. There are a couple of limitations here and there (or maybe I just haven't discovered the right method yet...) but this one box does the work of many (and more expensive) boxes. Finally, the sound quality question. I have no complaints here at all. I can't hear it making any audible difference to the sound paling through it unless I have ... MoreGiven a choice above of 'Yes' or 'No' in answer to 'Is it easy to use?" The interfaces on different devices do have slightly different feature sets though (the PC/Mac version being the most complete I believe). There was a feature (stereo linking two Aux Busses) that I just couldn't figure out how to switch on using my iPad...only to find that you can't do that on an iPad but you can if you use the PC/Mac interface. So I set up a snapshot on my Mac and that feature remains enabled when mixing from my iPad. Job done. Great piece of kit.

I use this as the centerpiece of a project studio. I got its sibling, the xr16 for playing live with my band as it was compact and allowed a more streamlined setup. When the time came to upgrade the mixer in my studio, the X18 fit the bill perfectly. It has a small footprint and the tray is juuuust big enough for a 12" tablet. First impressions were the same as the XR16 as their functions are identical, save for some differences in inputs and outputs. It can reliably handle 18 tracks out to Ableton Live at 48khz, though we rarely send more than 8 at once. Sound quality is excellent, and routing features are extensive. Making the switch from analog boards to this was a little tough at first. Applying the F/X and figuring out the monitor busses took a little getting used to but after a little tinkering and just finding my way around the unit, became easier and comfortable. Many have stated they had issues with the built in wireless Internet but I have no issues as if yet. I have set this up with a laptop and then have the freedom to move around and use my android tablet also with no issues. So far I am pleased and excited about learning more as I'm not a pro engineer but not a complete novice either. Don't let the uknown or unfamiliarity scare you, it can be mastered with a little time and effort. It sounds great and love the preamps. So far so good
