Wonderfully designed knife. I have been carrying two knives and a sharpener while elk hunting. I really needed all three while working up the last couple bulls. What a chore! My forearms were wore out and my hands cramping to the point that I couldn't hold my knives. Re-sharpening before going at it again may have been a nice break but I hated taking the time after the sun was down in a bear-rich environment. I hunt alone and have discovered that working up an elk single handedly is a job best accomplished with the best tools available. I have heard a lot of good reviews about these knives and decided to give 'em a try. Very well made item. Sharp as all get out. My arm is hairless..., I was so fascinated at how easily it shaved I probably should have quit after the ... MoreWonderfully designed knife. Looks silly but I guess it's a sign of an idiot with a really sharp knife. I've got a good one here.

The handle looks thin but feels better than it looks. It is well thought out and the design is such that it fits you without your conscious thought. Make a cut and then move your hand for a new cutting angle and the knife is suddenly positioned perfectly for what you are doing. Change grip for another cut and your thumb is just naturally into one of the groves near the front of the handle. You do not have to to adjust or try to get another grip. It's like the knife does it for you. Just wonderful, it looks so "plain" but that is deceiving, it does everything better than it looks like it should.Wonderfully sharp right out of the box and the edge has held up through three deer so far. Just no excuse to sharpen it yet. A bit more blade than necessary for anything ... MoreThe handle looks thin but feels better than it looks. Previous knives really let me down there, needing re-sharpened half way through the big jobs. I've heard a lot of good things about Benchmade knives holding their edge and believe this the solution.I'm going to need a replacement sheath though. The current one is good if I keep the knife in the pack but someday I may want it on my belt.

Skinned one whitetail with knife this season. Maintained an edge well and I like the style of the blade for skinning. The knife handle is thin and feels really natural in the hand. I wish this knife would come with the option of the Boltaron sheath, the leather is fine, however I feel better with my knifes out of leather which can retain/draw in moisture.

Fine Knife but came with a chipped handle.
11 October 2022

the knife itself is very good and came extremely sharp however it came with a small chip on the end of the handle and the sheath is falling apart after a singular day of use. if you have large hands I would get a knife with a larger handle as the handle is bordering on too small for my average size hands. all this could excused if this wasn't an extremely expensive knife but for what i paid i expect better.

Great looking, high-quality knife

I recently purchased the Benchmade Saddle Mtn Skinner through Bass Pro Shops. Purchased for skinning deer, elk and hogs. Have been using replaceable blade knives for a couple years but have found there are places on the animal that prove to be a little tough for replaceable blades and I've detached and broke a few, especially last fall on elk. This knife will do the job and according the reviews I read while researching can be used for long periods without resharpening if handled properly.FYI, the knife comes with a leather sheath that looks nice but there is no strap to hold the knife in there. I called Benchmade and purchased a kydex sheath (about thirty dollars) that holds the knife more securely and will stand up to the elements better. Great outdoors man Knife

I purchased this knife last summer with the intentions of using it as my hunting/fishing/camping knife. For those tasks it performs wonderfully. The knife size is just right for cleaning out a deer, or gutting a fish. The jibbing gives you a good feel of control when the knife is covered in animal goop. The s20v steel holds and edge extremely well, and after a years use, it is still razor sharp.I take care of my knives, and clean and strop them after each adventure that they go on.This knife is not very heavy, (When compared to a bushcraft knife) which makes it a great fixed blade for backpacking as well (IMO).I feel that this particular knife could handle light weight bushcrafting I just wouldn't expect to baton and chop with it.This is a knife that will ... MoreI purchased this knife last summer with the intentions of using it as my hunting/fishing/camping knife. Poor ergonomics for price point

Steel/Blade: 5 stars. Good shape, length, thickness and sharpness.Shipping: 5 stars. Arrived ahead of committed schedule.Handle: 2 stars. Wood grip is thin. Tang protrudes on the bottom and is not comfortable. Tooling marks exists in wood that are not consistent. You can tell they sanded certain areas and not others. Not ergonomic at all. The shape and thickness does not find a "home" in your hand naturally.Pricepoint: 3 stars. I'm sure this steel is a price driver but this is like a 100 dollar knife max. I bet REI has a significant markup on these...Overall, I wont return this as I used gift cards to purchase online for fun. Its still a cool blade and the sheath is nice. However, if I handled this in store I would not have bought it.Due to thin grip nature and poor ergonomics, I would recommend this knife for only light use. Perhaps use with a glove to thicken the grip and save you from the pinching tang on the bottom.

Top of the line, Dad, top of the line!
20 October 2021

Bought this for my son…he researched several and arrived this was “top of the line”Impressive how well it held an edge after field dressing a deer. Other knives usually require a light touch up to the blade to keep the edge.Knife was 3 times what I’ve paid for mine but sure does seem to hold an edge. Would recommend rubber grip…wood looks pretty but think the rubber would have a slightly better advantage. Happy hunting all!

Beautiful hunting blade! The new mods Benchmade incorporated are great and the sheath is a HUGE improvement over the original. I’ve had a Hidden Canyon Hunter since they came out and it has been great. Glad to have the new Saddle Mountain Skinner to go with it.This was my first order from Scheels. It won’t be the last. Great service and selection. Thanks folks!

Me, 20 year Paratrooper, lifeling hunter from WY.Love this knife for a couple of different reasons.1) I have owned it for 2 hunting seasons now and have dressed 4 Mule Deer and 5 Pronghorn without touching the blade. No tuning it up, not a quick carbide sharpening prior to dressing, 9 harvested animals and nothing but flesh and hair touched the blade. Factory sharpness and edge retention were like no other knife I have tried (and that list is very long).2) Benchmade as a company stands by its product. Look at the "Lifesharp" program that they provide for all their knives. After 9 animals the blade needed sharpening. I went online, did the "Lifesharp" form requesting inspection and sharpening. Sent the old scale back incase there was a memory attached to it), oiled and sharpened back to a factory edge for FREE. Then they paid to send it back my way. Whole thing took 10 days.
