This combo pack (Amiron Home + DAC) at this price is great value. The cans are the comfiest pair I have ever experienced, I can fall asleep while listening to these! Although I have read about the V curve sound profile as a potential negative, I don't find it as such. These are great sounding and balanced to my ears whilst not fatiguing - I can listen to these for long stretches without aural or physical discomfort. These are keepers. The minimalist style is appealing and build quality is solid. The DAC is plenty powerful to drive these headphones to reasonable levels. It would take a far more expensive pair of cans and DAC to best these and at that point, price wise, law of diminishing returns kicks in. Strongly recommend this kit!

Although I consider myself an audiophile wannabe, aside from winning the lottery, I do not ever intend to shop for headphones again. To me the Beyerdynamic Amiron headphones are perfect! NOTE: I listen using TIDAL streaming which is higher resolution than most. Also, I am playing music through my computer using an EVGA - NU Audio Sound Card – Silver ($250 at Best Buy). For the purpose of this review I listened through my IPhone 7plus. While it benefits from the better sound card, they sound 80% as good through the IPhone and far better than the Bose Quiet Comfort 25.

Comfortable, great sound, poor construction
24 June 2020

Pros - very comfortable, great neutral / slightly warm sound - perfect for all day listening (paired with Chord Mojo - they need a decent source to get the best out of them).Good although not deep / immersive bass. Great detail. Very occasional spike in trebles.Cons - they creak! Headcups creak when moving your head / jaw. Tried a couple of pairs. And the cables do exhibit microphonics - could be better quality. Was a hard call, in the end for me, sat at desk occasionally moving around, had to sadly go back for a refund. (Richer Sounds were great with exchange / refund process).

Great Cans for Home Use

Despite the cons mentioned, the sound profile isn't actually that much different to the DT 1990 Pro. The Amiron can easily justify its place in Beyerdynamic's line-up depending on what you are using them for. For studio purposes I prefer the DT 1990 Pro. It has a drier, more neutral sound. Loud, punchy music also tends to sound somewhat better on the DT 1990 Pro. It is also plenty comfortable, though the Amiron is even more so. For gaming and movie/show watching the more expansive soundstage and more relaxed upper-mids and treble make the Amiron the superior headphone. To make a simple comparison, the DT 1990 Pro gives the impression of an intimate listening in a private room. It's loud, clear, and the details are right there in your face with no coloration. I'm not an audiophile and have no interest in fads and trends in audiophile hardware. This review reflects that.I have an old pair of Sennheiser HD650s which have performed sterling service for me over the years but I've found them light on bass, so the reviews and recommendations for the Beyerdynamic Amiron compelled me to try something new. I've been meaning to buy a pair of these as a complement to my HD 650s, and I was surprised at the difference in tone. The Amirons have a much fuller, warmer sound. It's as if someone has dialled in lower mid-range shelving EQ compared to the HD650s, making the whole bass and lower mid-range feel more 'complete.' This section of the EQ spectrum isn't always the most appealing - it can make a mix sound muddy and acoustic guitar 'boxy,' but well-produced tracks have no problem on the BD Amiron that I have encountered. It definitely is an improvement on the HD 650s, and I was surprised at how much life it added to a well-produced recording. By contrast the Sennheiser HD650s seem to struggle in the lower mid-range and bass areas, and this makes the mixes sound thin by comparison to the Amirons. The treble has a lot of fizz in the Beyerdynamics. The HD 650s are more refined and less brittle. This is a matter of taste, but I prefer for many tracks the smoothness of the HD 650s in the tops. Other tracks benefit from the extra energy, so it varies. The real thing that blew me away was the way the Amiron's captured the sound of a guitar tube amplifier played on rock recordings. I've spent enough times in practise rooms and studios to know well the sound of a raw, overdriven electric guitar played too loud along with overwhelmingly fat bass, and the Amiron's absolutely captured that sound. It actually brought back memories of wall-to-wall blue-carpetted, cigarette-stained rehearsal rooms. The Sennheisers have never come close to capturing the 'real' sound of an actual valve-amp cabinet on any record, so I was totally delighted to hear the way that rawness and thump felt present in the Beyerdynamics. Audiophiles who don't play music, or only listen to classical records, will not be moved by this. But those of us who have gigged - trust me, you're going to like these headphones!Would I recommend them? Absolutely. There are times when the smoothness of HD 650s match my mood more, and treble-heavy genres might get a little brittle at times, but overall they are very good indeed. It could be that over time the headphones will play themselves in and the treble will be less emphasised, which would make them perfect. As it is, they are highly recommended.

Quality headphones with just a few caveats

Some good, detailed reviews are available for these headphones, and for the most part, they capture the pros and cons pretty well, so I won't go into too many details. They sound good, are very comfortable, and many people would be satisfied with them as their primary headphones. On sale, they're a great deal. I'm mainly comparing the Amirons to Sennheiser HD650s, HiFiMan HE 400i, and Beyerdynamic DT 990 pros. I think they're clearly superior to the DT 990s in every way (smoother, better dynamics, etc.). I also like them a good deal more than the HD650s, but it's probably more of a personal preference than objective better sound quality in all regards. I gave away the 650s because I found them dark-sounding and... boring, for lack of a better word. I gave away the 650s because I found them dark-sounding and... boring, for lack of a better word. However, I do think the 650s were better in certain aspects, such as with vocals. But generally, I would take the Amirons over the Sennheisers. However, the comparison I'm not so sure about is how they stack up against the HiFiMan HE 400i (my primary headphones for a couple of years). They are both clear, have decent (if not earth-shaking) bass, and pretty good treble, with minimal sibilance. While I think the Amiron has better bass extension, it also has a distracting mid-bass bump that I've been fighting with for a while. With an EQ adjustment of -4 to -5 dB between 166 - 333 Hz, they sound a lot better to me, but I still can't shake the feeling that they just don't quite sound accurate. Certain material sounds just about perfect, while other things sound ever so slightly bloated, while still somehow managing to sound thin in terms of vocals. Regardless, these are minor issues, and overall I like them, thanks to their all-day comfort and the fact that they actually sound alright plugged into my phone (my primary setup involves a couple of solid-state headphone amps). They sound good enough that now I want to upgrade my other components to see how they do with higher-end amps and DACs.

Best headphones I've ever owned, a superb match for the A20 amp and excellent value for money.
