I have worn Birkenstock Madrid sandals all over the world, journeying within work in world spiritual traditions, education, and service. The Madrid was created decades ago as Birkenstock's original exercise sandal, to benefit the feet, ankles, legs, knees, pelvis and back, posture and alignment. I purchased my first pair after a bad fall hiking in South America in which I injured one leg in eleven places. The sandals have been of extreme benefit to my life and body for almost twenty years. They exercise the foot and lower body, call the pelvis, back and torso into balanced alignment, and are chic, comfortable and cherished.

I love these. They're my go-to and great for traveling. They're casual enough for jeans or shorts but can be worn with a skirt or dress, too. I've even worn them hiking on the Big Island's lava field and and up and down Singapore's Bukit Timah Nature Reserve's muddy stairs and hills. My dog loves them, too. He's eaten about 5 pairs of these now so keep them out of reach of you have any furry mutts!

How can you go wrong with Birkenstocks? Bought this 2nd pair in black. I also have them in brown. An absolute staple! Being short, I really like this more petite styling of a single, smaller strap. Gives the illusion of a longer leg and doesn't cut me off as much as the traditional, double strap. I usually wear a 5.5 - 6 and size 36 was perfect.

After swearing for years that I would never wear Birkenstocks, I gave in to the trend and bought the Madrid in white for summer. I wear size 6 shoes and chose the narrow 36, and that was the right size choice. The first couple of times that I wore them, they were horribly uncomfortable. The top strap dug into the tops of my feet, and the bottoms felt like I was walking on wooden boards. I had read that it takes time to break in Birkenstocks, so I kept wearing them, and they did break in. After about three weeks of nearly daily wear, they're now very comfortable, and I find myself wearing them just about every day. Very easy to slip on, lightweight, and look really cute with shorts and skirts/dresses.
I’ve worn these for 2 weeks and I’m kind of disappointed. As cute as these look, They are not comfortable at all. I tried adjusting the single strap many times and still uncomfortable. I’m grim and bearing it because I paid money and already worn it...I’m pretty sure I cannot return it. If I could I would and I would purchase another type. I owned the Arizona and Mayari style and they were pretty great but this style not so much.
Love the look of these shoes, esp how they're more minimal looking and narrower than other birk styles. When they first arrived, I almost returned them because they're a hard to keep on your foot at first (especially going down stairs). But I took a risk and kept them and and am SO glad I did. I very quickly got used to them being more floppy than other birk styles (took about two wears), and am now able to wear them all day long. I've now had them for over a year and find myself reaching for them often. I rotate between this style and the classic Arizona, depending on my mood/outfit. If you like this style, give them a try!
I adore the style of these shoes! However, like other reviewers have said, they run narrow. They do not fit right, especially in the toe area, and aren’t as comfortable as other Birkenstock styles. I even tried ordering the next size up but they were still narrow and much too big. The black patten is lovely and looks great with anything. So sad that these aren’t a good fit. Because the style is so cute, I’m still considering keeping them. I’m sure I could wear them around but if a lot of walking was involved they’d be a no go.
Let year I bought the same madrid birk in silver and was pleasantly surprised since they cost considerably less than the arizona style. I particularly liked them bc less bulky. I have difficulty finding comfortable shoes due to some nerve damage in my feet but last year's size 40 madrid felt great! I live in NYC so walking is a part of life. This year I bought them in black but the sizing seems to have changed slightly. Normally wear btn size 10-10.5 in most shoes. Returned the 41s for the 40s - the formers' were too long and loose in toe box (i have a narrow foot) while the latter too short so I had to return them ad well. I will have to get last year's resoled until a find another birk that's equally as comfortable.
I have multiple pairs of Birkenstocks, and have a very old pair of Madrids I use as house slippers during the summer, but haven't seen black in the US for years! Other than the color, these are pretty much the exact same as my slippers that are more over 10 years ago!A lot of customers complained how uncomfortable and stiff these (and the new multi colored Arizonas) are out of the box compared to other Birkenstocks. These are the "original" suede footbed, not the newer "soft footbed" that's foamier. I usually break in the original suede footbed indoors for 1-2 months before wearing them outdoors.
I normally wear size 6-6.5, but I need size 36 in Birkenstocks even though size 6-6.5 converts to size 37. I chose to purchase the black patent leather over other leathers to polish up the look a bit. They're not as comfortable as others say they are, in fact they make my arch very sore and tired after wearing them for half a day. I've since broken them in after a week of wear and they are a little better. I would recommend wearing these with more structured or polished clothing so you don't look sloppy; it's very easy to look like you just rolled out of bed with these slippers.
