Where the mulcher attachment narrows, these will clog up the tube. Need to shut down the blower and pull the clumps out by hand. When there are lots, it’s still quicker to lay a large trash can down, rake the leaves in and hand compact them to reduce volume. When there aren't too many twigs, the mulcher does a nice job. I’ve found the mulcher attachment most useful for cleaning up "leaf drifts" from corners, along fence lines, xeriscaped areas, and to suck up scattered leaves from other smaller areas. Hand raking large piles of leaves into trash cans is quicker, but with the disadvantage of filling up the trash quickly. Mulching really reduces the volume, perhaps 2-3X what I can do by hand, but it takes longer, and in an arid climate is much dustier. My first machine came with the leaf collection system, with a cloth cover to fit over a trash can. One 30 gallon trashcan can hold an incredible volume of chopped leaves. But I don't like the leaf collection system as well as the Back Pack bag. The length of the hose limits your reach, so you have to shut down to move the trash can. The cloth cover on the leaf collection system attaches with a draw string. The force of the blower will blow it off the can and spread chopped leaves all over. I use a bungie cord to help hold the cover on the can edge - which helps some. You can also tip over the trash can over easily by stretching the hose a little too far - which again results in spilled mulch.I like the Back Pack bag much better. When I fold the bag end over 3x I haven't had any issues with the bag blowing open. It is much more comfortable to wear than the old style shoulder bags. The backpack holds enough mulch to nearly fill a 30 gallon can. It's also faster than the trash can style leaf collection system due to your range of movement. Your only limitation is your extension cord. At the lake, I sometimes have up to 175 ft. of extension cord attached. By the way, both collection systems are interchangeable between the newer and older model machines. I will be getting another B&D to replace the older one that finally died this fall

I am SO glad I bought this last year as my tree (and neighbor's tree) drops a ton of leaves and raking/bagging was killing my back (or I pay $200+ for raking services). This product allows me to get everything cleaned up over 4 weekends, 2-3 hours at a time and it has never overheated or stopped working. Glad I got a tip to blow everything into one area THEN stuck vacuuming! Much faster. Pros: lightweight enough for a 5'3", 56 year old woman; doesn't suck up the rocks in my landscaping; creates awesome leaf mulch for my garden beds; second year of use and still going strong. Cons: inconsistent mulching (every couple of bags, it's half a bag of partially mulched/still half sized leaves); a bit clunky to switch out parts from the blower to mulch tube-thingy. Take care ... MoreI am SO glad I bought this last year as my tree (and neighbor's tree) drops a ton of leaves and raking/bagging was killing my back (or I pay $200+ for raking services). I bought this blower vac for my stepson's Christmas present. I have one that I've been using for a few years. It has a lot of blowing and suction power thanks to its 12 amp motor. Yes it's not a battery or gasoline model. But corded electric gives you the most power without dealing with fuel carburetors and everything else. And the price and value is so much more.

Great for sucking up leaves from plant beds. Well made, powerful, backpack rules!
1 June 2021

This leaf vacuum vacuumed up magnolia leaves from around my ground plants without pulling the plants from the ground. At this price, it was a good deal, and also acts as a powerful leaf blower. Backpack style bag holds a cart full of leaves! Magnolia leaves are very sturdy and large, so if it can suck these up, odds are it will do even better with smaller leaves. Does it jam? Not really. On occasion, a larger leaf will wedge in the intake tube. But if you shut it off, the leaves will drop out of the tube by itself. I have NOT had to disassemble it to clear a jam or clog. Does it shred? Yes, and fairly fine, too. The impeller is plastic, but it does a good job of chopping up the leaves. The backpack part seals the deal. I had a leaf vac many years ago with a bag that dangled from the blower. Not only did it not hold a lot of leaves, it got heavy and awkward to use very quickly. That model had a zipper that clogged with leaf debris, too. THIS MODEL has a huge bag, and since it is on your back, it is easy to carry and it holds a lot of leaves without being awkward or getting in the way. No zipper to clog, either, but rather a fold-over snap mechanism like they use in waterproof kayaking bags. The thing is really well made and high quality and the price was certainly attractive. Yes, it would be better if it ran on battery power, but then again, it would cost twice as much if not more and probably not have as much power, which you need in a vac more than a blower. It's not for everyone. I needed it because the leaves fall between my ferns and other plants and it is impossible to rake them up. I would NOT use this for general leaf collection on my lawn, as it would simply take much longer than raking or running them over with my mulching mower (with bagger). But if you have plant beds and they get clogged with leaves, this is a perfect solution, at least for me.

Lasted one year to the day!
6 November 2022

I bought this as my town would no longer pick up at curb which means bagging everything. This blower/vac lasted me one season and only a handful of uses. Tried using it today and it was no longer mulching, just sucking the leaves up. Then, the coils in the flex tube started separating from the tube and causing leaves to get stuck. Had to remove the coils and now the hose separated from the bag. So unless I can jimmy-rig something, it becomes a blower that I won’t use.

Loud, Kinda heavy, works really well

We got this because we really dislike blowers that just move leaves around instead of removing them. We’ll never use the blower function, so this review is only about leaf vacuuming function. We like that it’s not gas powered. Took us a while to figure out how to assemble it for leaf vacuuming. It’s really loud. I find it pretty heavy once it’s all assembled and the bag is full. Kinda awkward to get it all assembled and hoisted onto your back. But wow…does it ever suck up leaves and turn them into tiny mulch. Giant piles are reduced to just a couple of bag fulls. It also sucks up ping pong ball sized seed pods. No issues with opening and closing the bag. Roll ends up like a rug, 3 rolls, clip the two ends like a seat belt. Done. Reverse steps to empty. Too many leaves are sucked up at one time resulting in a clogged vacuum wand. Part of the reason is the joint connecting the two halves of the wand. There is a 45 degree internal lip about 3/16" wide that occasionally will catch leaves etc., resulting in a jam requiring manual clearing. This occurs less frequently when large leaves are sucked up one at a time.I have experienced one instance when the electric switch failed to function. I suspect it was caused by all of the dust from those times when I got the nozzle a little too close to bare dirt while chasing a reluctant leaf. It is working now so only time will tell if it is a real problem.I have had the tool for a few weeks now and would still choose this tool over similar ones available.

Undocumented electrical safety cut-out

Bought at Lowes fall 2019 and used for fall leaf vacuuming, it works fine, as advertized, unlike some I had no trouble with the bag or the tool assembly, it seems well made and I expect good service from it.One thing caught me out though. Immediately after emptying the collection bag and refitting it to the head it wouldn't run. I couldn't figure out why. I checked power, ran a different extension cable, I waited a few minutes in case it had over heated and needed time to cool down, but nothing. I took it indoors and took off the rigid vacuum tube to check inside for blockage, no blockage, but, following reassembly of the rigid vacuum tube to the head it ran once more as normal. It turns out that there is a safety interlock on the fan-cover/vacuum tube attachments and this prevents the motor from running unless the fitting is in place, this prevents accidents from the motor running unintentionally with the fan blades exposed.I think this is what happened. When I went to remove the bag and flex hose for emptying I pressed the black button to unlock the flex tube, only to find the rigid vacuum tube came loose instead, I had accidentally pressed the wrong black button, the one that releases the vacuum tube. I re connected the vacuum tube, but it seems I didn't lock it in place securely and without my noticing it came slightly loose, and this allowed the safety cutout to operate and stopped the machine running. So if your machine mysteriously stops running without apparent cause it might be the same thing has happened to you that happened to me. All you have to do is remove power (for safety) release the fan cover (blower mode) or rigid vacuum tube (vacuum mode) and then re-attach the fitting paying special attention to ensure the black locking button has sprung into place and is completely latched. This restores power and the unit will run again normally.

What a workhorse!

This Black+Decker 3-in-1 leaf blower, vacuum and mulcher more than met my expectations! I was expecting pretty good leaf blowing abilities and so so vacuuming/mulching abilities but this thing is a beast! I had small, but difficult to get rid of, cypress leaves all over my yard and deck. Sweeping the deck was a pain and there's no sweeping the lawn, lol. I had tried another branded leaf blower and it barely moved then broke within half an hour. I was reluctant to try another leaf blower but am so happy I did.I had the deck and lawn free of the cypress leaves in just a matter of minutes! The lawn leaves I blew into a nice pile and then vacuumed them and mulched them so fast that I amazed myself. The lawn leaves I blew into a nice pile and then vacuumed them and mulched them so fast that I amazed myself. The leaves on the deck I just vacuumed and mulched, even the ones that were trying their best to hide were caught and removed! The backpack is a great feature! The weight while using the backpack is so evenly distributed so you don't feel like you're carrying around cement blocks. The handle also helps with weight distribution along with giving the blower maneuverability. I found that I was much less fatigued after using it than with any leaf blower I had used in the past. The bag was super easy to empty and close without even having to remove the backpack which for me is a huge plus. The only drawback, which I don't even consider a real drawback, is that the backpack is well designed for comfort that you might not even notice when it is full! I roll my bag 3 times to ensure nothing escapes, any less and you could have escapees! I simply unlock, unroll, empty, roll 3 times, lock and back to work.Changing from blower to vacuum/mulcher is simple, quick and easy. I really liked the power boost feature. If you are having any trouble getting those leaves gone with the standard setting, Black+Decker added a power boost button giving you extra power that will make quick work of those hard to remove leaves. Dry leaves will be easier to remove than wet ones, so bear this in mind even though I was able to remove both although the wet leaves were more difficult.I not only have used this for leaf removal but the blower I also use to blow dirt and debris off the carport, porch and even use it to make quick work of blowing out the garage, no more brooms or several tools for one job.Overall, I couldn't be happier, unless it was cordless, with this leaf blower, vacuum, and mulcher. This falls clean up with take less time and energy with this tool and leave more time for fall fun!

Worst Purchase of my Life - And I Bought Enron Stock
5 November 2022

This is literally the worst purchase I have ever made - and this is coming from someone who bought Enron stock at its peak. If you can even get this thing to run, the intake tube is wobbly and makes the whole unit shut off and on randomly, ostensibly as a safety feature. When it comes time to actually blow or vacuum leaves, it isn't powerful enough to even blow a single leaf at a time. Want to vacuum leaves? HA! If the humidity is anywhere above "Death Valley", you better not suck up two leaves at a time or this thing will clog and stop running. But it doesn't matter, because it will randomly shut off anyway. This thing is the worst designed piece of junk I've ever owned, I say that without hyperbole. Just buy a rake and save $100, it works a thousand times better.
