I’m not a climber at all but recently my 13 yr old son picked up the sport and is loving it and when we go to competitions he didn’t have anyone to belay for him so I ordered this harness and it works great once I get it fitted correctly to me. Probably the only complaint I would have is that the front strap where I tighten it like a belt to my liking is pretty stiff right now and is going to take some work but that’s more on me than anyone. It just means I need to belay more. 😁. One last comment, Back Country and Black Diamond gear is awesome for the situation I’m in, if I needed more bells and whistles, they offer that but they also offer the value equipment at a lower price point (harness in this case) which is perfect for me. 👍

Very nice beginners harness. I recently started top roping and took a class using the rental harness (not sure of brand) and knew I’d need something better. I bought the Momentum harness and am thoroughly impressed. The adjustments for the legs are much more comfortable and easy to adjust. Belt buckle is a single strap to tighten with double D-rings so it won’t budge while climbing. Fanny adjusters are with a single pull strap from behind.I can hang in this and fall hard without being uncomfortable, pinched or bruised at the end of the session. It’s a bit of a bulky feeling harness but I believe it just adds to the support/cushion for the user and does not impede climbing.Highly rec this harness for beginners unsure of what to buy. During hikes and backpacking trips we always end up climbing something, bouldering and rappelling something. I typically take my mountaineering harness (Petzl Altitude). It is so compact and light. It fits everywhere. But I wanted something still on the light side but more on the comfortable side. Don't get me wrong, the petzl altitude is awesome for mountaineering. But when you are climbing or anything in the middle of summer and have to hang with it for a while, it gets uncomfortable. So I ended up getting this one. It is a little more bulky than I wanted it to be but works. It is comfortable. It is a good beginner, entry level or climbing on a budget. I will recommend it more as an indoor, GYM sport climbing type of harness. Depending on how small or big it fits ... The gear loops are asymmetric and sometimes it feels awkward on lead trad climbs. Due to that asymmetry it does not get a 5 stars from me. But I will definitely recommend it as an entry level.

It's pretty commonly accepted that the BD Momentum ought to be your first harness; either it or the Petzl Corax. I used both and found this one a little more comfortable in the legs when hanging, FWIW. The ONLY reason I dinged it one star is because of the single waist buckle; which, if you are at the cusp of a size range, can cause the belay loop to be off-center. If you ARE at a cusp, I strongly recommend you consider the Momentum 4S, with two waist buckles, assuring your ability to center the belay loop. Either one represents excellent value and will provide you with comfort and performance, indoors and out.
The hip belt is not as easy to put on and off. If there was an easier grip to loosen the straps, would be a big improvement. Leg straps are really easy to tighten and loosen, and cost is very affordable though. True to size, in the sense that you won't have much give if you're at the edge of a size, it was exact for me.
I bought a medium for my son for Christmas and it was too small for him. It still had the tags on it and they wouldn't exchange it for a large because they don't do exchanges on climbing gear. It was obviously never used. While understand the no-return policy on climbing gear, it is frustrating in this circumstance when it was still clearly brand spankin' new. They never said it couldn't be exchanged when I bought it and I didn't think the policy applied to harnesses. Anyone want to buy a size medium?
This is the perfect harness regardless of your skill level. It’s got an excellent adjustment system on the waist & thighs to accommodate different body shapes or for baggier pants.Tons of hooks for carabiners or your chalk bag. Go true to size: I usually wear a size 31 pants and the medium fit perfectly.
I bought my first Momentum harness 20 years ago, as a teenager just starting out. While even though it’s a “beginner” harness, there’s nothing about it that says low quality. The thing served me well even after I was no longer a beginner. I used it heavily for sport climbing, canyoneering, ice, you name it. I sent it through the wringer and only retired it because you’re supposed to retire these things after 7 years just to be safe. I then upgraded to a more expensive model but now that I have kids, guess what the first harness I went to for them? The Momentum! Even though it’s a beginner harness, it works amazing and will serve the wearer well even after “moving up” in skill level.
I do not recommend. The way it was designed, adjusting the waist only on one side, does not keep the harness centered. I tried 2 sizes, thinking that was the problem, but I noticed that the design did not fit as others harness. Unfortunately.
Based on the sizing specs, I tried this in a Medium, but I could not fully tighten up the waist and legs (kinda loose; not 'safe' snug). So I returned and picked up a Small. Strangely, on the Small I must open the waist strap as wide as it goes and even then I can just barely barely barely get it on over my (not particularly large) hips/butt with some aggressive wiggling and writhing, after which the remaining tag end of the waist strap is so snugged up to the buckle it's difficult to get enough finger purchase to back-strap for a proper fit. Can I make it work? Yeah, with some effort. But I'd like to burn my calories while climbing not while harnessing up. Other than this issue, which I admit might be unique to me at 165 pounds, 5'10", 32 inch pants size, generally trim and fit but--being in my 60s--not sporting rock hard abs, this would be a fine harness for the gym climbing I want it for. My recommendation would be to buy in person if possible or be prepared for some return-and-exchange shenanigans (which, thankfully, REI does make incredibly easy).

Black Diamond Momentum Harness Blue S
The Momentum from Black Diamond is an allrounder that is somewhat underchallenged in the climbing gym. It can only show its strengths outdoors and preferably on multipitch routes. Black Diamond has built the seat harness using Dual Core Construction, which means that two strands of webbing run along the upper and lower edge of the hip belt, stabilising the EVA foam insert and allowing maximum breathability as they are not flat. In addition to optimising pressure distribution, this also keeps the weight of the hip belt low. Everything is surrounded by a highly abrasionresistant nylon material and can therefore withstand the highest performance requirements. When comfortably harnessed in this way, hanging in the harness at the belay station is also quite comfortable for longer periods of time. The triedandtested speedadjust safety buckle on the waist belt is prethreaded and allows the Momentum climbing harness to be put on and taken off quickly without any operating errors. The leg loops can also only be operated without errors, as the new TrakFIT adjustment works with a slide adjustment in a closed flexible system. Operating errors? Not a chance! Black Diamond has added a further safety bonus with the colouraccentuated rope loop. The blue of the loop stands out clearly against the grey harness. The elasticated fixation straps of the leg loops can be individually adjusted and can be unhooked from the hip belt. A haul loop is sewn in between, which, at 12 kN, can not only haul ropes upwards, but also really heavy material for long routes. The Momentum is completed with four compressionmoulded gear loops, which allow the carabiners to be attached and detached with minimal disruption.
