The battery pack is secured by a thin and flimsy plastic latch. It’s s terrible design. I can’t believe BD signed-off on it. It broke in my hands, in my kitchen, the very first time I tried to put batteries in it. I’m very glad it didn’t break out in the mountains somewhere where it would actually matter. I’m sure the actual light is adequate, but the battery compartment latch design is a fatal flaw, and a deal-breaker. You have been warned.

The OnSight might have been designed as a climbing-focused headlamp, and while it delivers there, it’s an excellent overall headlamp. When it comes to climbing, the dimmer, more diffuse mode is much kinder to your eyes and makes spotting foot holds much easier. It does best when worn with a helmet to help keep the battery from shifting around, but it’s plenty secure even without one. Separating the battery and the lamp makes the weight balance much more even and comfortable to wear for long stretches. A bright, narrow beam might be necessary sometimes, but a more diffuse light is preferable most of the time. The OnSight really commits to these two modes being distinctly different, and it works.The flexibility to use either AAAs or a rechargeable battery is convenient, but it’s a bit of a bummer than it comes disposables rather than the rechargeable battery, as those are all going to end up in the landfill and disposable batteries will likely become many people’s default. The rechargeable battery is claimed to be brighter and last longer than AAAs, so hopefully people will go that route.

Fits great on the captain and the half dome helmets. Easy to use, top button turns it and and 2 finger side tap to change settings. I'm not sure just how long the battery lasts but It last all through the night at least. It comes with triple a batteries but also can take the bd rechargeable pack. That's a good feature for the SAR missions I bought it to use on because you can't always charge it but you can always carry more batteries. It you are considering it, get it.
I have used this headlamp multiple times. Night climbing in the Gunks was pretty awesome. Gave me a very wide field of vision for climbing. It feels very balanced while wearing and works with a helmet well. Easy to change out the battery and love that you can use the battery pack and regular AA batteries. It my go to lamp for outdoor adventures and battery life has been great. I've used to climbing, hiking & splitboarding.
I bought a few of these because the first one I got felt so pefect. Then one fell. And the battery spilled all over. I was able to manage and not leave acid behind. I thought I didn’t secure the battery compartment well. At home I experimented with all of them. The batteries fell out after a few tests from all of them. One even broke the latch mechanism. Do not buy. Common black diamond!! This is dangerous.
Replaced a very old and well used PETZL headlamp with this unit. Took the unit to my local hiking trail which is very dark (no ambient light). Illumination on single lamp is very good on all settings. Illumination with both lamps is outstanding. Great value for the money and it uses readily available triple AAA batteries. Good tip for heading into the outdoors for any extended periods - always put new batteries into your devices.
I should have done more research. I've made the mistake of buying a cheaper headlamp with capacitive controls before, and it was infuriatingly inconsistent in it's ability to control. This headlamp is no differnt. The tap control of touching both sides to toggle modes often results in no effect but then when I go to adjust the angle by touching one finger to the top and one to the bottom if my finger brushes just one corner it will react as if the 2 sided tap occured. I can tap both sides 10 times and nothing, then do the same thing 5 seconds later and it works but often detects it again upon release and goes back to its default state. Capacitive buttons need to be very obvious about finger placement especially on something meant to be used outdoors. It also seems ... MoreI should have done more research. Seems like some very low level oversights, unless mine Is just defective. Physical buttons seem like a no brianer, I never understand companies that try to implement touch controls in places they only hurt function. Seems like marketing teams have too much control over design choices.
I just want a rechargeable headlamp that can also take regular batteries for convenience/emergencies/offgrid. I also like having battery back in back for comfort. So this gets pretty close but ultimately just frustrating. Rechargeable battery does not come with it; i bought the separate battery but it does not fit; it does say 1800 which was out of stock, but I got a 1500 but for some stupid stupid reason there is a battery contour strip which makes the 1500 not fit. Additionally, there is no charging port on the rechargeable battery; apparently I would need an external charger. Only sport this is excelled in was an exercise in frustration. One thing I DON'T love dealing with: half of my gear list being the friggin headlamp components. Get it together, BD.
Disappointed in the quality and functionality of the product. The clasp holding the batteries breaks easily and the inability to use both lamps at the same time leave much to be desired. A good headlamp should focus a beam of light ahead of you, this one only provides light in your general vicinity. The lumens appear to be over-stated and the head-lamp lacks features. I would consider this more of a weekend camping headlamp than something useful while on a trail or mountain adventure. For the amount of money this product costs, I expect more.
