I wanted to replace my current headlamp with something brighter. This headlamp is perfect:The headlamp lets me dim or brighten the light to the default brightness that I use most often. When I switch the lamp off, this default brightness is saved and comes up by default each time I switch on the lamp. I was going to buy this exact product, but when I got home I realised that mine was a AAA battery version that "could" take a rechargeable pack sold separately. The big difference being my one doesn't have any kind of USB port, while the USB model can't take AAA batteries at all. I didn't even know there were two versions of the same headlamp, and only one is shown online.But for the price of the Black Diamond rechargeable battery I was able to buy a whole pack of Eneloops with a charger...I would buy the AAA version instead though, because you can just use rechargeable AAA batteries and carry a spare set if you think the battery life won't be enough.The lights on the headlamp are quite good. The Black Diamond Spot 400 R headlamp is great for hiking trails, I’ve also used it for walking the dog around the city at night, and in one vehicle visibility situation. It’s functional design is compact, it’s easy to use, and also aesthetically pleasing. It’s rechargeable! There are multiple white + red light options, I really like the red light for safety, the strobe option (white and red) is a great feature. I used the headlamp for a drizzly hike, & I’m looking forward to trying it in rainy weather- it’s waterproof enough to be submersible. The head strap is comfortable, it adjusts easily, the reflective lettering on the strap is a plus. The ‘Bordeaux’ color is a really good looking brown. I’m a fan of this headlamp!

The dimming function was what I was impressed most with. With the leading competitors brand it has a step down staging affect each time you press the button, whereas the 400-R can give you whatever light intensity you prefer by simply pressing and holding the button. The button itself is designed so its raised feature has an ease of locating aspect to it. This makes it much easier to find your button if you are wearing gloves. The mode button was recessed a little so it was a bit more challenging with gloves, but given the raised button for the on off light intensity adjustment, which is right next to it, I easily got used to its location. A unique feature for this device is the touch sensing min max option. With this feature you simply graze your finger (doesn't work with gloves very well) on the bottom right side and it takes the beam in whatever mode (red, single beams and combined beam) and adjust to max or min with each touch. This actually helped to save on my battery life once I got used to it. The tilting of the 400-R is on par with other leading brands but has a tension type vs a ratcheting action which gives you whatever angle you want with ease. The memory function took a little figuring out. I thought there was a button pressing code but it really just came down to whatever mode or intensity you leave off on the light will return to that intensity when you turn it on again. This feature is nice because you always can have your fine tuned preferred adjustment. The SOS function was a bit of a disappointment. You have to use the touch feature for the SOS yourself and it is very difficult to get the right sequence right, plus if I was trying to get a rescuers attention wouldn't I want to have a brighter light? The waterproof function was by far the biggest standout for me. Other competitors headlamps don't give very many choices for waterproof features at this level, and especially at this price point. This is by far the best feature in my opinion. I used this light in the poring rain and it stood up just fine.The battery life goes fast in the max mode...I would say about 3 hours by my estimates.In summary this small, lightweight, full of options headlamp is a win!!!...and at this price point makes it by far a leader in this category of headlamps! I look forward to making this my primary headlamp for future adventures and hope the more than a thousand charges holds true. I think this is going to be a great around camp light but also great for backpacking and running.

But that is a minor inconvenience and I imagine I will get used to it over time.Other than the power tap button being a little finicky, this thing is very easy to operate. Easy to switch between modes, easy to adjust brightness levels, and easy to activate the strobe feature by double tapping the power button.If you hold down the power and mode buttons at the same time for a couple of seconds you can lock the lamp to prevent accidentally turning it on while stuffed in your pack. Repeat the process to unlock.Rechargeable, lightweight, comfortable, bright, adjustable, and easy to use. I can’t imagine myself ever needing another headlamp again.
Let me start with what really sets this apart from other headlamps for me. It’s the way the red light functionality is set up. First is it dimmable. Other headlamps I own this is not the case. Second when powering on, the headlamp will return to the same red light configuration as was set when the light was turned off – without any white light at all. The state of charge of the battery is indicated when powering down by three small LEDs on the side of the lamp.I have gone more than 7 hours at the 200 lumens-level without at recharge. This is plenty of light for me to move around in the dark. However, a tap on the side of the lamp immediately moves it to max brightness (400 lumens) regardless of the white light setting. Tapping on the side in the red light mode move it to max red light setting.I have not used this in the rain – or kayaking!!, but the headlamp is rated IP67 meaning that the lamp is submersible for at least 30 minutes. The buttons are complete underneath a plastic cover, so there is no opportunity for water ingress there. The USB charge port is found underneath a small door. When the door is closed, a small plastic protrusion fills the USB port which is how water is preventing from entering there.The lamp can be rotated downwards about 30 degrees to better see the trail immediately in front of you. It’s also a good angle for reading. The lamp can easily be set to flashing – SOS even – in either the white or red light.The one thing I wasn’t happy with it the length of the supplied USB cord. It is only about 6 inches long. A longer cord would allow the lamp to be placed in more secure or convenient when charging. Also since the lamp can be illuminated while charging a longer cord would allow me to use this attached to me backpack strap and being charged from a small battery in my backpack or pocket. I will have to get a longer cable to use it in this configuration.Overall quite happy with the headlamp and it’s feature.
This headlamp has a great balance of weight to performance, lasts long enough without feeling like you've got a giant rock strapped to your forehead. Strap is strong, soft, stretchy, and comfortable. The headlamp itself has every feature I think you could possibly want, and then some. The obvious caveat about rechargeable vs battery-operated notwithstanding, if you are looking for a USB headlamp this is a great option. It tilts, has red night light and two white light modes, and the controls are fairly intuitive after a while. The only feature I can't get the hang of is the touch control for the "SpotR" super bright blast, but I don't really see myself using that anyway so I'm willing to write it off as a gimmick I can ignore. Overall, excellent product.
