My local Ace Hardware store was out of my favorite, so I got a bag of this instead. Pieces were of various sizes with a lot of milled and smaller pieces. When I tried to do my usual low and slow cook, the fire snuffed out more than once. After a couple cooks, I realized this charcoal needed a lot more oxygen to get to an maintain the temps I needed. It would be a good choice for high temp grilling but I'm excited to get back to my favorite and less expensive brand.

Really? Recycled pallets and pieces so small they fall through the grate. Had to send the wife to get charcoal during a brisket smoke. Wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy.

I'm a huge fan of Blues Hog sauce and rubs. In fact Blues Hog original is my favorite BBQ sauce. Their dry rub seasoning is my "go to" for pork and the newer Blues Hog Sweet and Savory rub is a good product. The lump charcoal was an extreme disappointment on many levels. To start with the lump had a fair amount of recycled lumber/molding/furring. Even if the recycled lumber was never finished/sealed or stained smaller pieces are undesirable.Secondly the majority of the pieces were small and the bag had a lot of "dust".The smoke/flavor impaired by BH lump was extremely unpleasant. Over the last 10 years I've used/sampled anout 2 dozen different lumps. BH is in my bottom 3.I don't mind paying more for a good product, but am always disappointed when paying more ... MoreI'm a huge fan of Blues Hog sauce and rubs. Wicked Good and Kamado Joe Big Block are superior lumps on the ACE shelf at comparable prices. B&B is less expensive and provides a better cooking/dining experience than the BH.According to Blues Hog's website they source their lump in the US, which is a plus. Unfortunately that's the only good thing I can find to say about it.

This stuff snaps, crackles and pops more than a fresh box of Rice Crispies. I had an ember hit the corner of my eye fold, narrowly missing my eyeball by a fraction of an inch. Also, the pieces are either too big or tiny crumbles and is clearly made from old pallets, which I do not wish to cook on. I had to abandon the batch I started due to the embers issue. It was unsafe to cook on without a face shield. I'll just stick with Kingsford.
I had abandon the batch I wanted to cook with. I took an ember to the eye but managed to close my eyelids so my tissue is swollen but they eye is undamaged . The embers never quit popping and shooting everywhere. If i have to use a face shield with this pallet charcoal (yes, it seems to be full of pieces of charred lumber, most likely pallets) then I'll use something else.
I was impressed with Blues Hog initially when doing relatively short cooks but an I was unable to get an overnight cook as the charcoal burned fast. It held temperature at about 250 degrees just fine but did not last very long before I had to replenish. Good flavor though.
Not ideal for smoking. Unfortunately this lump was all Ace had at the time, and I heard good things - probably great for actual grilling and searing as it gets ripping hot and eats up coals.. Absolute nightmare on the Kettle for any kind of smoking. 90% tiny chips and a few huge logs that wouldn’t catch. Tried everything to hold temp. Ended up with my first ever grease fire in 2 years on a set of measly spare ribs, so had to throw them on the pellet grill to finish them off. B&B and Fogo have no problem for a low n slow cook, set the vents and walk away. Add as needed. Kept getting notified that these would soar past 350 every 10 minutes even with vents both nearly closed. Tried soaking em to damper and they’d just light right back up. Absolute worst lump ... MoreNot ideal for smoking. Absolute worst lump I’ve ever used. Don’t waste your money unless you’re cooking burgers. Go FOGO. Not sponsored, your average Sunday backyard cook here, and absolutely frustrated with this garbage.
Tried this as one of a list of lump charcoal I wanted to sample. Well I found 1 decent piece that had a section of bark that may have been a section of log. The rest are literally 1 x 4's. Did I pay hard earned money for charred recycled pallets? Why would a company selling lump charcoal go through the trouble of cutting wood into perfect 1 x 4's only to shoulder it down to charcoal. There are no round "chunks or lumps" in the entire bag larger than a 6" piece of rendered 2 x 4. And then I found it... perfect charred nail holes in the end of a 1 x 4 piece. Whatever this was in its previous life, it was dimensional lumber. Some pallets are indeed hardwood, but I didn't pat for rendered dimensional lumber Made in America. Also hard to achieve 600° in my KJc. Doesn't ... MoreTried this as one of a list of lump charcoal I wanted to sample. I’ve only purchased 1 bag but like. Reviewer Robert I to ended up with with a handful of rocks including one about the size of a baseball. I’ve only used lump charcoal for about 3 yrs now but this is the only time this has happened.
This is some compressed wood briquette type wood. It is in octagonal cylinders. It is not pieces of wood turned into charcoal. Not sure how it's able to be called lump. Not easy to start. Burns hot. Kinda smelly.
