My variable speed AEG 4.5" grinder gave up the ghost after 26 years! So this is its replacement. I find having a variable speed is a valuable asset on a small grinder. This Bosch is fine so far after a few hours use, it's well designed with a slim body and is lighter than my AEG. Also have registered at Bosch for their free three year warranty.

Although I tend to buy Makita 18v cordless tools I also have a lot of respect for Bosch, having some of their very nice 10.8/12.0 volt kit and a lightweight cordless hedgetrimmer. The thing that attracted me to this particular model is the variable speed which I couldn't find on other brands without paying double the price and anyway I don't need a super-powerful 1400w tool. The GWS 9 seems very solid and well built but, having only just taken delivery, it hasn't seen much use yet. My only criticism, if you can call it that, is the red spindle lock sticks out and looks as if it could be vulnerable if caught on something. Best be careful! I think the recessed design as on Makita angle grinders is preferable.

Haven't tried it yet, but seems a well built bit of kit. Pity it doesn't come with an anti vibration handle or its own carry box. After reading several views from different sites, the plus for me was the variable speed selector on the end; it's nice to have a bit of control when needed. Also, it's NOT the X lock model, so any 115mm accessories will fit. Will try it out soon.

This grinder on the best one I've ever had and I've had a few being an engineer. I purchased this one specifically for its six speeds as I needed to key some ceramic tiles for painting and 12000 rpm tore the guts out of them. Speed 1 is very acceptable and the diamond wheel I purchased fitted straight on and was very controllable with this grinder.
Not yet used for the purpose I bought it for but feels right in my hands - weight. The spindle lock button is difficult to operate while trying to fit the disc with the spanner. I considered the X lock kind but was unhappy if difficult to get the X lock discs widely in the UK. and price. Significant beneficial feature for me as a DIY'er is the speed selection feature.
The speed adjustment on this grinder makes it a very versatile tool. I bought it to strip paint from an old building as my previous grinder ripped off more than the paint, leaving gouges in the masonry but this does it really well. The balance is nice and the on/off switch is the best and easiest to use of any angle grinder so far. I can see me using this grinder for much more jobs in future
The size of the tool was the primary consideration here and with the rated power of 900W, it is ideal for garage jobs. It is small enough to get into tight corners and provides powerful wire brush cleaning. I needed to cut stainless steel chains used for securing motor bikes and it did the job with a single diamond disc cutter.
This is one of the few 230v grinders with variable speed facility. All my previous non variable speed grinders have vibrated excessively when using with wire cup brushes and the bearings have failed prematurely.Surely this is essential feature and is barely mentioned in the details list. Shame no case but otherwise so far 100%. Shame we can’t review after using a few months
I bought about ten of the gws7 grinders because I really like the slim grip but they were really poor quality and only lasted a few months in a fabrication shop . I gave up with those and thought I'd try the gws9. This is a much better build quality, nice to have the speed control for different applications and a rubber flex that is about three metres long instead of the 5hite plastic "flex" that were fitted to the others . The only thing that is a bit disappointing is the disc lock button, it's looks like the sort of thing that would be fitted to a really cheap grinder , it sticks up too high and may well get easily broken . Also will most likely let debris into the gear housing . I have three of them now so I'll see how they hold up . My first Bosch grinder lasted ... MoreI bought about ten of the gws7 grinders because I really like the slim grip but they were really poor quality and only lasted a few months in a fabrication shop . I'm not sure why they don't build these to last anymore but I'll be happy if these last for twenty months . All in all these seem like a nice grinder . The grip is slightly larger than the gws7's but still slim enough to use with one hand . Soft start is nice too. ( Although I prefer the old straight on version)
I bought this as I needed a polisher as well as a grinder. It won't handle 180mm polishing mops well on the lowest speed setting due to the torque needed for the large diameter. I use a felt pad with rubbing compound that I had to cut down to about 80mm diameter. But I think this is asking a lot from a tool that isn't designed for this purpose. Other than that I think this is a great little grinder. I like the quick angle adjust on the disk guard, no need for a screw driver or allen key.
