This is the third Boss MFX pedal I've owned over the last 10 years or so. While Boss has a reputation for amazing and durable effects pedals their COSM modeling has always sounded a bit too digital for my tastes so the other units always sat in my FX loop of my tube amp using 4CM. To my ears that all changed with the GT-1000. I finally have a compact unit that I can bring to practice or gigs and either go DI into the board or pair it with my Friedman FRFR and it sounds great. The effects on board are top notch and IMHO sound better than the Line 6 HXFX which I also own. There's just something about Boss effects that I really like.As a recording interface this it has some really nice features like the ability to record a dry signal on another USB channel ... If you have ever used Boss Tone Studio then you will feel right at home with the PC editing software. No surprises there. But the Bluetooth, oh yeah that rocks. I connected it up to my iPhone or iPad on a stand to make quick adjustments on the fly or stand 100 feet away to tweak EQ settings. It's a standout feature that really sets the board apart. If you have any of the older COSM boards (ME80, GT100, GT1 etc) and like them, then you will LOVE the GT1000. Go get it!!

Ok after going through the entire manual I know how to make great tone with this pedal. The Boss GT-1000. People who think it sounds Digital don't understand how to use it. The Dimond Vox amp is exactly what I think of when I think Tube Amp. Many of these amps are not simulations but made up creations that produce tones of gain. When gain levels are cranked really high you should probably move the mic placement away from the speaker cone or else it sounds like razors on your ears. You could also fix this by using larger speaker cone cabs or even by moving the mike away from the speaker but this makes the sound sound less up front weakening your attack. So this pedal gives you considerably more options in shaping your sound, and with more options comes more ways to ... Watch out when going through the factory presets be sure to turn the Output Level down to 25% lol. I totally love this pedal by the way. : )

I have run the full gambit of buying all in one amp modeling units in the 90s, becoming dis-satisfied with the sound, and then going all tube amps and vintage pedal boards, and back to the all in one floor unit. I have to say I really love this unit's sound and responsiveness. My personal opinion is that all in one floor units of the 90s were a great idea ahead of their time. The hardware of the time just wasn't powerful enough to make them sound good. The GT1000 changes that because it is a 32bit, 96Khz, floating point amp modeling monster. When the frequencies and bit depth isn't high enough, the accumulation of multiple transforms on a audio byte-stream will start to have audible artifacts and that is exactly why these type of units from the 90s just didn't cut ... When the frequencies and bit depth isn't high enough, the accumulation of multiple transforms on a audio byte-stream will start to have audible artifacts and that is exactly why these type of units from the 90s just didn't cut it. Additionally, the GT1000 uses a new type of algorithm called AIRD which is amazing in that I can really feel the guitar respond like it would to a tube amp. I have been playing it by directly feeding it into a line in to the sound board and through a small tube amp at home, it sounds great in both configurations. I love the ability to configure on the fly from my phone via bluetooth. During practices I can tweak patches without having to sit on the ground and fiddle with the nobs on the unit. Using a real GUI on both the computer and on the phone makes it really easy and convenient. They have done a pretty good job make it easy and fast to configure. That being said I did have some issues: First, when I got it, it had some really old software that I had to update right out of the box or my phone wouldn't connect. It was also confusing because there are 2 versions of the app in the app store, and of course I downloaded the old one that wouldn't connect because my units firmware was to old. Then when I updated it, the app wouldn't connect because the app version was to old, so I had to discover that there was another version of the app (1.2) that I had to download instead. All is good now though.
This is by far one of the best amp modeler / multi-effects I've ever played. I've used with a solid state combo via stereo line-in (bypassing the preamp), and using the 4CM into a Mesa Boogie MV.25 and custom 2x12 cabinet. It's great either way, but the GT's amp sims are so good I almost prefer it direct without all the cables. In the 4CM I use the Boogie's preamp for distortion rhythm and screaming leads, and the GT's preamp for clean and crunch/TS9 tones - basically a 4 channel setup including JCM cleans all through a tube power amp. It's a Boss so you know the effects are top notch with deep editing capabilities, and the delays and reverb are just sweet!! The amp sims are really cool in that they have Sag and Resonance settings that allow you to adjust the touch sensitivity to the point where sometimes I'm just shaking my head in amazement!Very important: Download the Boss Tone Studio app, watch a video or two, and then you'll be amazed at how easy it is to edit patches on a PC. It's really fun, and you can even try Tone Studio out before buying a GT. Be forewarned though as you might yourself spending a lot of time tweaking the settings just for the heck of it. :)Although I've heard some people gripe about the buttons being a little close together, it's not a problem for me but your YMMV. Personally, I'd rather have it that way than a bigger form factor and more weight.Lastly, the colored LED switches are very handy, and it's a Boss and built like a tank. I'm seriously looking forward to using the GT-1000 as my go-to practice or performance hub for years to come. To that end I ordered the official Boss ME-80 case and it fits like a glove! For reference, I own a lot of Roland, Boss, and other high-end gear, have played for over 30 years, and have had a Boss GT-10 since they were released (Shhh... the GT-1000 is much, much years better!).Keep on playing!
I sold my Line6 HD500X multi fx board and bought this because there were some effects I wanted, like autoswell and some other aspects of this that I preferred, like the smaller size and the ability to add 2 extra expression pedals was great (the inexpensive Nektar pedals=great). I was able to get sounds I liked, but was frustrated by some limitations to how many duplicate effects I could stack, and there were times when I got frustrated with it. I had an instance when trying to record with a friend when it just wouldn't pair with my MacBook Pro for recording through Logic. And other times when working with effects there would be some non-intuitive things I'd have to relearn how to do. I've been working with similar units like this from back in the day with rack ... I had an instance when trying to record with a friend when it just wouldn't pair with my MacBook Pro for recording through Logic. And other times when working with effects there would be some non-intuitive things I'd have to relearn how to do. I've been working with similar units like this from back in the day with rack effects, and owned many models of DOD, Digitech, LIne6, Rockman, and Zoom but this was my first Boss multi-effect unit. I tried to love it, and the form factor and size is great, but ultimately moved to the Headrush Pedalboard full size unit. It was between that and the Helix, but the Headrush got me. It's got the best user interface of anything out there, with the touch screen and custom naming for each of the footswitches, and the hands-free editing mode (so easy!). If I could give the Boss GT-1000 3.5 stars, I'd do that, but ultimately, I can't recommend it because for the money, the Headrush blows it away for usability: speed of creating presets, adjusting on the fly when performing, and ability to name the footswitch so you know what each one on a given preset does. The Boss has the advantage only for size and weight and the double external expression pedal jacks. As far as effects, I guess that comes down to personal preference on the specifics, but I'd say they are more similar than they are different. No effects unit out there can compete with the software plugins I use for recording and mixing, so for me, it came down to the best for live, spontaneous control, and that's where the GT-1000 lacked.
Excellent value on a flagship BOSS/Roland Product. It arrived exactly as described, basically new with everything functioning. I am still exploring the near limitless combinations of preamps and effects to use as patches. If you have the opportunity to pick one up lightly used as I did I would highly recommend the GT-1000. You will want to use a computer or the android or iphone app to edit patches on the fly. This product is a dream for those who want almost limitless versatility in guitar tones. Please note I am not a tone or pedal snob, and your experience may vary from mine.
The GT-1000 is the perfect solution for me (I now play in a worship band and needed something versatile and portable). The sound is incredibly realistic and dynamically expressive without needing to tweak for days. I can go from blues to rock to metal, and I've found myself actually using the neck pickup more often for rock music because I like the tone. The computer software is not flashy, but I've come to enjoy the simplicity in appearance. Navigating on the unit itself reminds me of an old digital Tascam recorder/mixer I owned, so I got the hang of it pretty quickly. I really enjoy having 5 patch switches with 3 optional on/off stomp switches per patch-it gives me a lot of options on stage. I really enjoy having 5 patch switches with 3 optional on/off stomp switches per patch-it gives me a lot of options on stage. In terms of amp models and effects, the GT-1000 doesn't bludgeon you with choices like L6 and Fractal, and I rather like that. I typically just find one or two amp models and a basic delay and reverb, and I use that as the basis for every patch. I did load some impulses, but haven't used them because I've found the AIRD technology to be very versatile in dialing in the right feel. I will say that there is a learning curve to discovering the responsiveness of the parameters for every amp, effect, cab, and especially the mic configuration, and you really have to spend time with the unit to get the full potential. Regarding the physical build, I love the compact size, and the look overall is super sleek. It's sturdy without weighing too much, so you won't easily kick it around on stage, and it isn't a bear to transport. As a last note, I A/B'ed this with my friend's Axe FX III, and while Fractal will blow you out of the water with tweaking options (if you're into that), I found the sound to be just as realistic on the GT-1000, and my Fractal-homer friend reluctantly acknowledged that the GT-1000 can hold its own. I do think that the Axe FX III is "the best" sounding amp modeler, but the GT-1000 is in the same ballpark and is an excellent value proposition in comparison.
Now with the Ver3.2 update and actually using this pedal in recording I love it even more than before. Its like they read through all the complaints about the product and crated a solution for them all. Its got an added optional stomp box mode so it can function like a stomp box pedalboard for people who prefer that to the layout of manual and memory mode. its got added effects boxes, so now in addition to having more delay pedals than I would ever need I have more effects pedals than i can use in good taste. And of course you can always dive into the effects chain to turn these patches into whatever you like. unlike other effects processors I use this one seems like allot of thought was put into actually dialing in something that sounds good. Its really fun in recording to just try out new sounds that you didn't have to spend any time working on. The synths and stuff like warp and panning that I can tap into the same tempo of the song are supper cool. So many beautiful sounds And I must praise that large output level knob that can be adjusted quickly and effortlessly with your toe. lol. That makes using an effects processor a much more pleasant experience. Oh and its also a bass pedal now. You can switch any effect into bass guitar mode. Well now I'm excited to get the manuals out and dive into this thing some more. At first I thought it was pricy but now I feel like Its so worth it and I don't even understand all it can do yet. The Upgrade process was so Ez. All the upgrades just go to show that Boss really cares about there flagship and pointing out any flaws you might find in this thing will only make it better.
To me the sound quality of this pedal sounds slightly more polished in a way than other effects units. Its got its own kind of sound and that sound is undeniably great, weather its the best Is a subtle thing that everyone will have there own opinion about. To me it sounds more polished than guitar sounds I'm all ready happy with. You can also change the switch types to momentary if you like, this is supper cool and a big selling point for me. You can arrange the order of the effects chain however you like, similar to the way computer plug ins work. They got designated reverb, effects, and 4 or 5 delay. I love boss delay as much as the next guy but wow. Its funny how they have that manny delay pedals in the effects chain but only one effects pedal. You would think it would be the other way around. Its got some new kinds of effects lake some shimmering stuff that kicks in once you stop playing. Its got the Terra Echo, a really unique boss reverb sound. its got two amps in the chain and really cool stereo widening stuff as well. Its a bit intimidating at first but its ezer to figure out than it looks. Its just difficult to wrap your mind around all the possibilities so you can figure out how you actually want to set it up. If your into that, I think you will really like it.
