the Boss Katana 100 is a terrific "little" amp. I have tried many different amps for pedal steel guitar from the Peavey renown 400, ( terrific but as heavy as an old Fender twin ) to the first edition Fender Mustang, (too complicated and I thought chintzy), to several other amps in between. I found that this Katana was not only fairly priced but has tons of Boss effects on board. Getting the tone studio into your computer, if you even want it, was a bit complicated but do-able with some patients. You can program the amp right from the top panel so I wouldn't say the tone studio is an issue anyway. At under 40 pounds appx. it is perfect for getting back and forth to a gig or a studio... many other features, too, including plenty of ins and outs. I loved it

I have Mkii combo, multiple tube amps and top multi effects modelers, there's something in the Gen3 that just sounds and feels amazing that makes me want to play it more than the others. Very happy with the purchase, and an amazing price too. Only thing It needs is a tuner!!

I was ready to go looking for a speaker cabinet for this head. But I was shocked by the quality and volume this little 5 inch speaker can produce within the head its self. The variety of watts you can choose makes thus a very versatile head from practice to full jam. The effects are very very good. I have the pedal coming and working on tone studio to add even more versatility. Im still looking for a speaker cabinet to finish the set up, but Im in no hurry. Some how they have put some major sound ability in this head and this little speaker. Is it a 100% tube equal ? No, but these are some real tones that are very very much in the right direction and very close and very responsive. Try it, I bet you will be pleasantly surprised!

Very handy and the sleep mode is ideal but mine rarely wakes up like it is suppose to and I can't find or get any support on the matter. I have the waza headphone and the wake up perfectly and have different setting for that but the amp fails in this area. Other then that I love the amp but when you pay this much for a produce because of a lot of features you want them to work.
Sound:For me the big standout tone on the Gen 3 is the new Pushed amp. It nails that edge of breakup tone perfectly, and it makes drive pedals sound more better than just into a clean amp. The Bloom feature is nice, but I don't really use it much. It's something I would like to explore more though. Boss says that all of the amps have been re-voiced but I can't really give an honest side by side comparison to validate any difference over MK2. All I can say is I love the tones I get out of this amp!Features:Bluetooth Tone Studio is probably my favorite feature. It kind of stinks that you have to buy the adaptor separate, but at least it can be used in multiple Boss products. It kind of stinks that you have to buy the adaptor separate, but at least it can be used in multiple Boss products. With that out of the way, being able to make quick tweaks or even major changes from the tablet on my mic stand is a huge plus. I did try using it to switch between effects and use Live Sets to see if I could actually cover our 4 hours worth of cover music using just the GAFC and no pedalboard and it works, but the Bluetooth connection dropped a few times and required the amp to be powered off and on to recover. With so many variables involved with BT it's hard to say if it's a Boss issue or just the flakey nature of Bluetooth. Either way it can be done, but I think I'm going to stick with my pedalboard for the time being. Another standout feature for me is the XLR out and the updated Line Out settings. It finally has a useable line out that doesn't sound bad. I can't really think of a least useful feature. One of the great things about the Katana is everything is fairly well thought out, though some features could still use a little work. There's still no GAFC or MIDI option for tap tempo on the Solo Delay, and the overall MIDI implementation could be a little better.Ease of Use:With just about everything on the panel and front facing knobs it's very easy to get a good tone right away. You still need Tone Studio to do any effect editing but being able to do that with a tablet or phone is super handy. Plus the new(ish) Boss Tone Exchange has tons of really great livesets to get you started if you want. The only downside is it isn't integrated into the mobile app. Boss says they are working on it though.Quality:It's made like every other Katana I've owned the last 8 years. Plastic and MDF but I've beaten the living crap out of my other ones and never had anything break, so I'd say they are made pretty well!Value:This is a tough one. The Artist Gen 3 head is a great amp no doubt and well worth it if you want the best Boss has to offer, but you can get 90% of the features and 98% of the tones from the standard Gen 3 head and at much less cost, it just doesn't look as sharp. I'd be very happy with either one honestly, but I opted for the Artist because of the look and the XLR out. You still get tons more amp for the money than any other Solid State head out there, so in that respect it's a good value.Manufacturer Support:I've owned Boss products for over 40 years and while I love them, their support is just like their documentation. Frustrating and incomplete! Thankfully between YouTube and the VGuitar forums I've never had a question I couldn't find an answer to.The Wow Factor:This amp should appeal to anyone, but I think the head and cab configuration is geared towards a gigging guitarist who sees the advantages of these amps and simply needs a little more. The days of Katana bashing are long gone. People are finally taking these amps seriously for gigs and if you show up with one, they know you mean business, value your money, and can cover any type of music out there. I highly recommend any of the Katana ampsOverall:I am what might be considered a Boss fanboy. I have always liked their pedals and over the last few years fell in love with the Katana. The Artist 2 Combo and my pedalboard have been my gig rig for the last couple of years. I decided to go back to a head and cab and after some deliberation between the Gen 3 and an Archon, I decided I would stick with what I knew and go with the Gen 3 Artist head and Waza 2x12 cab and still use my pedalboard. It's a decision I do not regret. The ability to have so many tones that are nearly indistinguishable from a tube amp without the weight and maintenance is pure joy!
Great sounds with lots of power. Sounds very close to my Engl, without the hassle of tubes...
Great amp lots of different options in a great package
This is quite possibly one of the best amp heads I've ever owned. Over the past forty years I've owned many great amps from a lot of the widely known and revered manufacturers (Marshall, Mesa,Fender, etc.), as well as effect pedals and rack gear. Heck, I've even owned products from Line 6 (Flextone II). This amp is both vastly different, yet it is quite familiar. I'll explain: This is the first physical digital amp that I have owned that sounds AND reacts like a tube(valve) driven amp. It's touch sensitive and reacts to guitar volume and tone pots just like any of the great tube amps I own. Does it absolutely REPLACE those amps? No. Does it funtion good enough that I would gig and record with it? Yes! No. Does it funtion good enough that I would gig and record with it? Yes! The engineers at Boss are wizards in that they really have found a way to put lightning in a bottle. You need a Jazz Chorus sound? It's got it, you need a great pushed edge of break up tone? It's got it.Chicken pickin'. Yep.Gonna jam some Slayer with some buddies? Covered. The front panel knobs will give you limitless tonal and gain variations, but the secret sauce is in the app. Be prepared, you are about to go down the rabbit hole and deep in the weeds with this. The elusive tone that you're looking for is in there, waiting for you. Using the editing tools, downloading a new tone or maybe uploading your own is all possible. I've been having an absolute blast creating and playing my own tones. I cannot wait to take this out to gig! Another feature that Boss put out on the Gen 3 that is way overdue but greatly appreciated is the inclusion of an XLR out to go directly to the P.A. for the utmost of live flexibility. Thanks Boss and Sweetwater! P.S. The only things I wish Boss would have done 1. Built the Bluetooth into the amp instead of paying for it separately. 2. How about an amp cover available? It's absolutely ridiculous that a cover isn't available for Katana Artist heads.
