Last year I purchased and built an custom pedal board around an ES-8. It is a wonderful switcher however 3 things led me to move to the MS-3 and I am so glad I did: (1) the pedalboard (28"x14") with road case weighted ~46 lbs so it wasn't fun to lug around (2) I play bass more than guitar and the ES-8 did not get used much and (3) I have found that most quality modulation, delay and reverb effects I can make work for me and the MS-3 had so many built in.There are so many good things to say about this thing so I will begin with my sampling of the effects. What I have heard I have loved. The chorus options are great. Delays sound great as Boss pretty much fathered the modern delay pedal. Reverbs sound pretty good, not the best but usable. I can match programmed tempo to modulation, delay and reverb in a myriad of different ways. Oh, and what you may not know is that the advertised built in effects varieties are understated. Example: Boss lists that it has a built-in compressor. It actually has 8 different style compressors! OD/DS - 21 different overdrives/distortion styles all customizable to each programmed patch. Simply amazing. After spending some time with it I love it more and more.Almost forgot to mention that this thing has built in Bass effects including 6 OD styles. Now I can use one output to guitar amp and one to an onboard DI Box so I can use the same pedal board for bass and guitar. The PC editor is like a dream come true. So easy to use. I plug it in to my laptop and create patches while I am watching TV. I has 50 banks of patches but the editor can store I think an unlimited amount allowing you to load the patches you need for a gig. Built in tuner. Draws less than 280mA 9DC so you can power it with your high output pedal power supply. I now have an incredibly versatile 18"x14" pedal board that can do more, with ease, than some pedal boards that you need a hand truck to lug around. What a great product and value!

I am a long time Boss MFX user, GT-10, GT-100 and now the MS-3. Since the GT-10 was released I've used MFX boards live with tube amps using the 4CM and most recently with amp modelers. With the 3 FX loops and much improved MIDI features the MS-3 is a lot more than just a well built mid tier MFX board. If you're coming from the GT-100 to the MS-3 there are some adjustments which are obvious, screens, less switches and no built in pedal but with the increased functionality I find it well worth it.Still testing it to make sure I can do what I need to in a live setting but so far I'm finding it does great and a much smaller foot print even with an external expression pedal. My plan was to use the MS-3 with my amp modeling rig and keep the GT-100 for the tube amps but at this point I feel like the GT will be spending some time boxed up in the closet. Still in the honeymoon period but so far I'm very happy with it.Another benefit is that the power requirements are much less and I have been able to run this off one 2 amp power supply with my other pedals.

I bought this because of the potential to have just about every pedal Boss made AND a 3 loop switcher. Problem is to use all the functionality you must program the combinations as a Preset rather than dynamically change the effects and loops on the fly. I can see where this would be an excellent tool for a touring musician with an established setlist so that presets can be made and accessed consistently. But if you are a 'weekend warrior', local-gigging player like me, set lists can change During a performance. The MS3 does have a Manual mode, but can only assign up to 4 effects using the 4 foot switches. Also, I was only able to assign one of the 3 available loops to on any set of 4 effect slots. You are also limited in the types of effects available at one time. If you need more than 2 modulation, or a delay and reverb, you'll need to use the preset patch approach. It sounded great! It just didn't fit what I need for the live shows I am currently doing. If you need versatility of switching effects on and off independently and not necessarily preprogrammed, try the TC Plethora, which does have 1 loop available in addition to any effect on any of the 5 foot switches.

I just got the ms-3 thinking that I will mostly use it for conveniently switching between different effects. What I did not expect it that the effects built into the MS-3 sounds so incredible and the functionalities are so powerful. Build quality also feels super solid. 10/10 purchase
I've owned this for about 3 weeks and like the over all sound. My main goal was to have a master switch to control my EVH 5153 with midi and still use some of my pedals which it does. what I don't like is the how the banking feature works. If you have a midi channel programed to switch when you press the 2 switches to bank up or down it will change that midi program also unless you hit both switches perfect which is almost impossible. I've been lucky once or twice. I ordered the FS7 to bank with hoping it would disable the banking function of the other switches but it doesn't. So if you have a clumsy foot and how close and sensitive the switch are you can channel to the wrong bank and patch. They should have made the unit an inch or so bigger and add dedicated ... They should have made the unit an inch or so bigger and add dedicated banking switches. also with the FS7 banking it goes right to the next patch up/down from there instantly where with the banking from the MS3 it goes to the next bank of patches and then you select what patch.Navigating through the menus is fairly easy and there is tons of videos on Bosses site and Youtube to help with getting to know the MS3. Over all I'm happy with the purchase but the banking function is its weak point for myself.
I’ve had the MS-3 for about 1 1/2 years and love it. Versatile, easier to use than some think, clean signal path, drives are solid (personal favorites are the RAT and BOSS Crunch), effects are typical BOSS (great IMO)... I use the following in the loops to compliment/build on the MS-3 base:1-Source Audio Nemesis Delay2-Source Audio Ventris Dual Reverb3-Mesa Boogie Throttle Box DriveOne thing I really like is the ability to use the MS-3 footswitches as dual purpose where they function as a patch selector-then tap a 2nd time to trigger an internal function (turn on/off an effect like tremolo or vibrato, turn on/off the Solo function to engage a clean boost for soloing etc). This is typical of some of their multi etc units (GT-1, GT-100 etc). Highly recommended. ... MoreI’ve had the MS-3 for about 1 1/2 years and love it. I was looking to downsize my pedalboard a bit and decided to go with the pedaltrain classic 1. Then the MS-3 came out and it was just what I need. I use the midi to control my empress reverb because of all the effects, I think the reverb is lacking just a bit compared to the empress. This was my first venture into midi and it is really quite easy with the MS-3. The modulation and delay are top notch and work just fine for my uses. I also use the mini Dunlop volume/expression pedal which gives even more functionality. I love how you can make patches and also go into those patches on the fly and add or take out effects. All in all, I think this product has lived up to the hype in my mind and I feel like I downsized the size of my rig, but also upped the amount I can ... In my three loops I have the boss bd-2, boss ds-2, and a big Mff tone wicker pedal, looking to hopefully switch one of the boss pedals out for a wampler tumnus...or something else...we shall see. If you have any questions about this product, feel free to ask me!
I was totally surprised by this product. I purchased it to help simplify and shrink my pedal board, thinking the modulation effects would be good but expecting very little from the overdrives. I have owned and/or tried many of these types of (non-analog) devices and have never been able to dial in usable overdrive/distortion tones. From the Boss MS-3, I got just the opposite. I still have my favorite analog overdrive on the board, but there are sooooo many good and usable overdrive possibilities, I was shocked. This product is almost perfect for my needs. No more tap dancing, etc. It definitely took some time to get it gig-worthy, but what a payoff. I have kept my Strymon Mobius on the board as some of the effects are clearly superior to the MS-3, but all-in-all I ... MoreI was totally surprised by this product. This thing is amazing. I had a pedal board with excellent modulation, reverb and delay effects but hated the lack of flexibility for those - one setting on the pedal that's it. But I also have distortion and speciality pedals I want to use (Mel 9, Mooer 002 UK Gold, Tube Screamer, etc). This lets you combine the best of both worlds. Use the awesome and flexible Boss modulation, reverb and delay effects with parameter changes per patch AND use three separate effects loops for speciality pedals. It's compact and the USB software is easy to use. The amount of control you have with MIDI and control in and out is truly awesome. Right now they have to be moved separately. I'd like to have my looper in the chain before the reverb so I'm not looping reverb but I want my distortion pedals in front of the chain. Can't do that. :( Hopefully we'll see a software update to this.
I admire what Boss set out to do with this product; grab the old-school guys like me with their well-loved individual stomp boxes and guide us gently into the modeling age with an easy to use tool. They came pretty close to getting all the way the way there with the MS-3. It does so many things right, it's highly worth checking out. It's small, so it fits easily on your board considering how many pedals it could replace. The sounds are pretty amazing, it can go toe to toe with any other multi-fx unit I've ever used. I've had a loop switcher on my board for the longest time so the idea of being able to combine loop switching capability with a built-in bank of all the modulation and delay effects I could ever want seemed ideal. But what I simply can't understand is the lack of flexibility in HOW you can use the 3 loops. It blows my mind that they have to be in the effects chain, in Series operation, in the order they're laid out, 1-2-3, that's your only option. It's not possible to change the order of the loops, or stagger the loops throughout the chain with other effects in between them. I'm dumbfounded that nobody at Boss thought it might be nice to have the option to put another effect BETWEEN the overdrive and phaser pedals you already own, or to be able to change the order of one dirt pedal into the other, or to run your pedals in either series or parallel operation. This thing is pretty useful and the effects sound great, but despite all the flexibility I think Boss kinda shot itself in the foot by missing some very basic options that should have been no-brainers to include.
