I can’t tell you how long I’ve wanted an IPL machine for the chin and neck hairs that have plagued me for 20 years - waxing and plucking and shaving has never been good enough and left me with spots and scars. This IPL comes in a very nice, great quality bag with two heads and a razor. There is an app to download that guides you through setting up the machine and how to use it, that also serves as a way to keep track of treatments and also notify you when your next is due, and works on both wifi and Bluetooth. I love a bit of tech and app connectivity, so this is right up my street. I was surprised that the device has a fan in it, I don’t know why, as I suppose it would need one given that it’s intense light… anyway, the handheld device is very sturdy and feels heavy and robust in the hand. The two heads are easy to change and the app guides you through what head to use, what intensity to use and how to use the device, either stamping treatment or gliding treatment. I had a bit of a sweat on when I first came to use it, I was worried what was going to feel like. I was following the instructions but it wasn’t doing the test flash on me, no doubt because of user error, as you need to place on your skin so it can read your skin tone, and it wasn’t firing. My fault because I chose to do it at the bottom of my leg near my ankle and I don’t think I was holding it correctly. After I figured that out, it advised you to wait 15 minutes to see if there was any reaction. There wasn’t, so I was free to continue. It feels hot and a very bright flash and click, I think the anticipation is far worse than the actual thing! It is by far the least painful method of hair removal, because it isn’t at all. It’s a 1/10 at best for pain, so it’s nothing at all I immediately switched to the precision head to do my face - I used the app to set up a new weekly schedule and chose the lowest of the three intensities, selected the colour of the hair and off I went. It took 3 minutes max, and I used 22 flashes. It felt totally fine, and just ever so slightly hot and a little tight afterwards, which subsided in a couple of minutes. Very very easy to do and so quick!!! I already can’t wait to do the next treatment next week! You must shave clean and dry the areas you are treating, and given I had a days growth of hair on my legs I’ll be trying that after I’d been in the shower, that’s the only prep you need to do. It will probably take a while to do my face hairs as I have been plucking daily for years, so I will shave only from now on so that they will all eventually be in the same growth cycle, so I can treat them all. Literally the only reason I haven’t bought one before now is that they are expensive, but I believe there are some models that are half price over Christmas. I will be using it pretty much from the chin down and hopefully not need to shave again!

Sensitivity settings can be customised to your preferred settings, making the product more customisable. It is important to do a skin test before carrying out the treatment, ensuring that the settings and the device is safe to use. There are 2 methods of using the device: gliding is a fast and efficient treatment for large areas (such as leg, arms) whereas stamping is great to treat small or hard to reach areas (such as face, under arms, pubic area, ankles, knees). After finishing, it is recommended to apply SPF over treated areas to protect from sun exposure. The usage is recommended to be once a week for four to twelve weeks, and then to continue treatment as is required. This is an expensive product but I believe it is an investment. It will save a lot of expenses over the years that would otherwise be spent on waxing, shaving, and other hair removal products.

There are two techniques to using the systems - stamping and gliding. Stamping is pressing the button and then immediately letting it go and gliding is quite literally holding the button down while slowly gliding it up the part of your body your using it on. It flashes a bright reddish light which you are recommended not to look directly at especially if you have photophobia or other eye conditions. For me the stamping technique has not hurt yet although I’ve only tried it on my legs but the gliding technique can become quite hot and it’s like little pings against your skin. You can use this system once a week and is recommended for a 4-12 week period. I’ve used it a few times now on my legs and I am noticing a bit of a longer time in between shaving. My fair haired friend has also noticed a difference even though it said it wouldn’t work on her. So far I would completely recommend this Braun system as even though the retail price might be steep it is working rather well and is also beautifully packaged and great quality.

I've been using it twice weekly for two months and there has been a drastic decrease in the amount of hair, texture of hair, hyperpigmentation from years of skin damaging hair removal methods, and a massive improvement to the overall texture of my skin. My constantly embarrassing five o'clock shadow is gone. Some realism: you Must patch test, you Must start at the lowest setting and only work your way up when you know your skin can handle it, you Must follow the directions regarding shaving vs plucking - this is a serious device. Be aware it works best on dark hair and only middling on blonde hair (my dark hair patches are Gone, but the blonde patches are more stubborn). I do use this in combination with tretinoin, which is doable but higher risk. I let my skin get used to the IPL for a month before resuming tretinoin. I have a routine of tretinoin, wait three days, IPL in the morning and tretinoin in the evening, repeat, giving my skin a few days of recovery from the tretinoin before the IPL. I'm not recommending that you do this without patch testing and knowing what your skin can handle, but since I saw so many mixed messages online about it, it's worth mentioning that it may be doable for you.
