Best Value in Espresso GrindersThis is my second one, the first wore out after 8 years and about 2 tonnes of coffee (seriously). It has a built in doser, easy to adjust. There are two cradles for portafilters, one for 54mm (standard Breville) and 58mm (almost everybody else).Changing out coffee is painless with the easy-removal hopper that has a lockout gate in the bottom. The best part is ease of access to the burrs for cleaning and adjusting for overall finer or coarser grind. There are better grinders of course but they are much more expensive. This one meets my needs perfectly at a good price. The photos show the 54mm portafilter with dosing funnel attached (dosing funnel is available elsewhere), removable hopper, access to the burrs and finally the adjustment ... It also grinds perfectly well for pour-over. Really shines at espresso without breaking the bank.

This grinder has greatly improved the quality of my espresso pulls. I use a Breville Infuser espresso machine. After having tried an extremely high rated grinder which did not work and which I returned, I decided on the Breville Pro Grinder. Dialing in to find the correct grind setting is surprisingly easy and this is a credit to how accurate the grinder's setting wheel works. Although there is some residue left behind, the gram measurement for beans in grounds out is spot on 99% of the time. The grinder is relatively easy to clean and is fairly accessible. You will need to spend a minute. The counter profile of this grinder is nice and the machine is very manageable for my smaller hands. I enjoy this little beauty everyday and am finally pulling consistent shots. ... MoreThis grinder has greatly improved the quality of my espresso pulls. I use a Breville Infuser espresso machine. Overall, and considering the price, I'll give this grinder a 4-star rating. I needed to upgrade from an older burr grinder with one that will be primarily for my drip and pour-overs, but can serve as a back up for my espresso machine if my current espresso grinder (Eureka Silencio) should ever fail, and the Breville Smart Grinder Pro checked all the minimum boxes, including a budget limit of $200.The user interface is good once you understand the programming/operational interface. It gives me a fairly consistent grind, and does so in a reasonable amount of time and at a lower noise level than my previous grinder. The magnetic latches are a nice touch, and I appreciate the bottom catch tray that is easily removable. On to some areas that could use improvements:- ... It gives me a fairly consistent grind, and does so in a reasonable amount of time and at a lower noise level than my previous grinder. The magnetic latches are a nice touch, and I appreciate the bottom catch tray that is easily removable. On to some areas that could use improvements:- During the grinding process, the pitch of the motor changes frequently -> a more powerful motor would be beneficial.- Static. As others have mentioned, there is a fair amount of static generated and especially on the bottom side of the grinds container cover. TIP: put a few drops of water in the beans before grinding and the static will be greatly reduced. Engineering with different materials and flow design can improve the static generated (my Eureka is outstanding at not generating static - no water drops needed!)- Grinds retention -> there is a lot in the chamber and chute. This will cause staleness and bitterness over time, and as others have pointed could cause premature damage to the impeller (secondary upgrade opportunity Breville -> use a metal impeller). Frequent cleanings are necessary.- Appreciate there is an adjustable finer/coarser setting on the removable burr. Some have indicated that it still can be a challenge to get really coarse grinds for French Press like applications and at the coarsest settings more grind size variability occurs -> likely could be addressed with upgraded burr design?
I bought the Smart Grinder Pro to accompany the Breville Dual Boiler Espresso Machine. It looks good and pairs well on the bench with the espresso machine. It has an air tight seal on the bean hopper to keep coffee beans fresh and has stainless steel conical burrs for optimal grinding. There is an LCD screen displaying the grind time, grind size and grind setting. The grind size can be adjusted from fine espresso to coarser plunger and everywhere in between and will grind beans manually or automatically. Now that I know the grind that I like for my coffee, I simply put the basket underneath and push the 'start' button. There is a microswitch at the rear of where the portafilter sits that wakes up the grinder when you touch it with the portafilter. Pressed a second ... It is a great enhancement to my Breville Dual Boiler espresso machine.
As I am new to brewing espresso, I opted for the Smart Grinder Pro (SGP) to go with a new Breville Bambino Plus. The SGP does an adequate job of grinding beans fine enough for espresso. It is easy to use and maintain and has some nice design features. It is not particularly large, is well styled, and looks nice on the counter top. its has a large hopper that holds a pound of beans and is well designed for taking on and off. There is also a safety switch that prevents using the grinder with the hopper removed. The portafilter cradle is held in place with a magnet and is easily removed if desired. The grind start switch behind the portafilter cradle is handy allowing one hand operation. Micro adjustments of the upper burr is helpful to achieve extra fineness if ... The grind start switch behind the portafilter cradle is handy allowing one hand operation. Micro adjustments of the upper burr is helpful to achieve extra fineness if needed. The grinder does produce static and does retain some grind, although after about three doses the retention becomes less. I would prefer a little more power from the motor and the plastic drive gears worry me as they are easily stripped with a hard bean or small rock caught in the burrs. There are work arounds to maximize the performance of the SGP. I prefer to single dose and weigh the beans. I modified the grinder with a third party single dose kit that has a bellows to help minimize retention. That with a small water spritz of the beans has almost eliminated the retention problem. An important thing to know is that the burr adjustment is continuous and can be set to a position between the digital readings. Overall it is a very good grinder for the price and one would have to spend 2-3 times as much to see an appreciable improvement in performance. At this point I am happy with the grinder, recognizing that to go beyond entry level will cost a whole lot more, both in grinder and machine.
Dear espresso friends, you may look for other grinders at this price point or at 2-3x this price point, but it is doubtful that you will find such a trusty machine. I read dozens of professional/semi-professional reviews and found there to be (like with many other hobbies) rabid snobbery regarding Breville, which is wholly misplaced. My advice = find the reviews that show you the particle distribution for the Smart Grinder Pro, and you will find that it competes at the top echelon of grinders priced at $700-900. What's surprising in most reviews is also the lack of detail regarding just how much control you have with the grinder, and that control comes from the ability to set coarse or fine controls on the upper burr. There are not just 60 individual grind settings...but 600 on this machine! I have an Isomac Zaffiro machine with an e61 grouphead and use a 58MM bottomless portafilter for my shots. With the burr set to 1 (yes 1) and the exterior dial set to 3, I grind 20g of dark roast espresso beans (Embolden from Lifeboost) into a 17G La Marzocco basket (using a dosing ring), then use the WDT method for distribution, then tamp and add a 1.7mm Normcore screen on top of the puck. ~29-34 seconds later I get the most glorious espresso that rivals any professional barista in town (NYC specifically). Until I made the switch to home espresso, I simply thought that I had to 'live with' sour (or bitter) espresso from fancy coffee shops. WRONG! You too can bring your espresso unicorn home with a little practice and a lot of patience.
The first grinder failed in less than 3 months. The second grinder arrived with high expectations and the second one has a different set of problems right out of the box that were not present with the first unit that failed (first unit simply stopped grinding). The following issues are present with the second grinder that were not present in the first Smart Grinder Pro:1: Excessive static electricity, there is ground coffee that sticks all over the place and at least a tablespoon does not make it into the receptacle/bin.2: The grind time setting and cup setting appear to have no correlation to one another (the first grinder put out the measured amount for the cup setting, I must have gotten lucky with the factory set up on grinder #1). I have tried altering the cup setting, I've tried altering the grind time, I've tried altering the grind size; (I have the time setting set 11 seconds shorter than the original grind time/cup setting) and it still produces between 9 and 12, there is so much static that it just makes a mess trying to measure things out or even dump out the bin. It's basically grinding at random (I have not switched brands of coffee and I have tried 3 different bags of the same kind of coffee from the same company - never had a problem with grinder #1)
Had mine for 8 years, never had an issue, use mine 3-4 times a week for espresso. Works great for pourovers and aeropress as well. Easy to clean, hopper and top burr grinder comes off, I recommend cleaning once every ~3-6 months for longevity and getting any stale coffee grounds or coffee oils out.Only note - is I would recommend Breville to provide more documentation on how exactly adjusting the inner burr changes the grind size. I've needed to adjust for espresso and now all my other pour over & aeropress recipes are off by a bit and I'm not sure by how much the grind size changed. Would be nice to have some sort of chart of Micron values so we can normalize 3inner45grind and 5inner 35grind to the similar conversion. Would allow us to better communicate with ... "medium" or "medium fine" work too I guess, but I just think it's a bit of a missed opportunity to have better transparency on what we are adjusting there or how much we are adjusting it by. Makes for a little less trial and error for the user.
Very happy with this product (and Breville's excellent customer service). If you're looking to upgrade your grinder - essential to great coffee - but are on a budget, this is the grinder for you.The conical burrs make a great difference in producing an excellent grind that is uniform throughout. One great feature is that you can add your portafiter to the machine and as a result get just what you need if you're a home espresso maker. I should add: It's great for our regular grind as well, with lots of "dialing in" options to make sure you get the grind just how you want it.I want to elaborate on that last point just a bit. You can find the grind level you like, and just return to it every time you brew for your drip or espresso coffee. That's totally cool. But ...
