However, its also on the right side and a little hard to press. Also on most espresso machines the lever is on the right side as well. So if you want to activate the timer at the same time as starting your shot, its awkward to start the shot and timer with the same hand…or if your use two hands, your hand are kind of crunched in the same area to that. In addition reaching in to stop the time at the end of the shot is just as awkward and its easy to fumble with it before actually pressing it which can add 1-5 seconds. Ultimately I found myself wondering how long my shot really was. Its just so much easier to have a cheap $5 timer in your left hand that you can easily start and stop…and pull the shot with your right. I guess the advantage of using the timer on the scale is that you have 1 less piece of equipment but you lose the value in it because of how awkward it is to use it.I initially was going to return the scale because I was so let down by the practicality of the modes. (I had high hopes) However, I changed my mind because the scale does exactly what I need. It measures to 0.1 grams with a heavy cup or portafilter, I can manually tare it, and its water resistant enough that I don’t have to worry about whether some espresso spills on it (the major selling point when comparing it to a $20 amazon choice).Anyway, I would recommend this scale but would lower the expectations on how practical all the modes are. I think it’s a prefect example of adding too much complexity to an activity that doesn’t need it. In theory they seem amazing, but in reality they aren’t very practical for espresso.

These scales make it much easier for me to achieve consistency in my process. My previous kitchen scale was only accurate to 1g and did not fit under the espresso machine group head. This scale solves both of those issues. So I can measure my beans and my espresso weight very easily.The only thing I don't like is that the buttons are a bit squishy; I wish they were more clicky. So I have to push down fairly hard on them to get them to register.

Been impressed with it so far. Small enough to fit nicely on the tray while making espresso based coffee. The tallest cup we use is the tall keep cup which just fits under the portafilter when sitting on the scales.It’s been useful working out how the pours are going without having to wait till it’s finished and then weigh etc.Happy we bought it.Side note we have the breville dual boiler coffee machine to give an idea of the dimensions of the tray etc

Really happy with this. Responsive, simple, does exactly what it claims it will do. Got it on sale but wasn't sure if it was going to be super laggy (a common complaint for all but the most expensive scales, it seems). Sure, there's a tiny delay, but it works exceptionally well for weighing beans and measuring time and yield when pulling shots. It's definitely made a big difference to the consistency of our coffee as every bean counts. I use it all the time with the rubber cover/mat and haven't found this to cause issues (as I've read some reviews elsewhere which say this markedly affects accuracy - this hasn't been the case for me). It's not the thinnest scale ever, but with a bottomless portafilter there's heaps of room on my Barista Express. Just need to be ... MoreReally happy with this. Just need to be careful to place the scale such that it is resting on the front frame and grate, not just the grate alone, as this is quite spongey which does affect accuracy. Small and light too - so it's not a problem to move it around. I charged it once after we got it, and have been using it for weeks without the battery even getting to halfway - very impressed. Finally, I use this for Aeropress brewing as well; I've tried using the specific mode for pour-overs etc. and espresso and while they're good, I've found that changing modes is actually quite a slow process, and the scale is particularly finnicky about when you take things on/off. It's easy to reset the timer or tare off when you didn't mean to. For that reason, I've just left it on mode 1 now and I manually press the right buttons when I need them.
The Brewista Smart Scales 2, is excellent for pulling an espresso shot, the taring and auto timer feature set and different modes provides a function little unit.A very small delay (<1 sec) once the tare / timer button is pressed.Measurements are accurate and precise, they do not fluctuate like cheaper set of scales.Would recommend for any home coffee setup as an essential tool!!!Thanks AB Team.
Roughly a year after purchasing this scale it started regularly acting up. Searching forums on this issue, I saw plenty of people having the same issue. The "fix" was ensuring the device was kept well away from any sources of steam. Umm.... correct me if I'm wrong but coffee scales should be built to live their life sitting on a drip tray. It's like suggesting that a certain car works great, as long as you keep it away from bitumen. If you want scales for espresso, buy a different brand.
These scales are very well made. The materials on the base and top are great. The materials around the screen could be slightly improved to give them an extra premium feel. But the buttons and display are functional and make them a good workhorse set of scales.The 6 modes are well thought out and work well. My favourite is mode 5 which allows me to dial in my espresso machine in a breeze. Auto cup tare then auto time as first drip takes away the hassles.My only gripe.. It is a bit slow to respond. If you want to use mode 1 for basic weighing then switch through to mode 5 it takes some time. You can't just press 4 times quickly to get to mode 5. After 8 months the Tare button stopped working entirely.As an avid repairman with plenty of experience repairing appliances, this scale is clearly designed to be thrown out when broken. That is why I did not approach the manufacturer for a replacement, because we have enough e-waste in this world.The screws in the scales face upwards which allows water in, as well as that there is a huge gap between the scale rest and the internals. The modes were useful while they worked. I would love to see more manufacturers taking more steps to ensure their products last longer and can be repaired. These looks high end on the outside, but on the inside, it is clearly another poorly engineered product. I say engineered, because I definitely seen stuff out of china built better than this.Will not be buying another one. I will be uploading a disassembly guide for anyone that is interested. Although there is no replacement parts so it may be a waste of time.
