A 2 1/2 year old can work it!

My grandson loves this engine!!! He has about 5 other ones, different brands, and this is his favorite. He learned how to work the switches but would rather roll it by hand. It stays on the tracks better, rolls easier, and the cars stay attached to its magnet better than his other engines. He just puts it on an uncarpeted floor and it goes all over. He calls it “Big Red”. Wants Ho Ho to bring him the green engine and the Bullet train.

Awesome, Powerful Train

This train is fantastic! We have the other basic Brio train and while it's great, this one is super powered. It uses 2-AAA batteries, so it really hauls. And we've been running it for several days and it doesn't seem to be losing any steam, so I am very pleased with battery life. What's also very cool about it is that it plays a choo-choo noise and my toddler can easily make it go forwards or backwards with the yellow buttons. I am not sure why I see others rating it poorly--we love it. It is a must-have for the Brio train collection.

The ideal train to upgrade my 3year old grandson's railway track. Quality item that looks as if it will be robust enough to cope with the excitement of a small child!

Durable with good features

This train is great, love how it can go forwards and backwards, has a light and makes sounds to keep the kids entertained for hours. It turns itself off after 5 minutes of non-use to save battery power but if the batteries do run out you can free the wheels so the kids can still play with it by pushing it along. To get the batteries in and out you'll need a screwdriver that'll fit down the train's funnel. My eldest son wishes it had a face - yes he is a big Thomas fan!

My kid loves it!

This was bought for my little train lover kid and he plays with it almost every now and then on his tracks of the tracks, it has be within his reach. Brio quality is really good and can be added as an extended piece to existing Brio World. The only thing I might prefer in this train is the way you put the battery. It could be more easier and simpler. Thanks

Overall is great train, but

Overall is great train, but at times(and can be more then less) it stops and needs a push here and there, when other Brio battery trains, do not have issues...maybe because of length? Not sure...but if it wasn't for this issue, would give 5 starts and up. Still great addition.

Wooden toy?

I bought this for my grandson on the birth of his sister. I thought it was expensive but thought it would have lots of play value. I assumed the higher price was due to it being a wooden toy. The description said wood and plastic. However, this train is only plastic. Very disappointing especially as it is Brio, renowned for its wooden toys.

Worth the money to stick with Brio, a reputable brand!

I chose this engine after researching others. I like it because it has rubber wheels as opposed to plastic ones so it grips the wooden tracks better than hard plastic wheels. It has all the bells and whistles that my grandson likes to press and hear, and it works, pulling several cars on a straight track. It goes up hill, too, but downhill is a little tricky. The battery compartment is hard to get to, but I don't mind that because the batteries have lasted for us and I don't want the battery compartment kid-friendly anyway. Worth the money.
