I've have owned several iterations of the Cascadia and always go back to it. Each generation has design changes. Some are good and some not. This is the first waterproof version I've purchased and it certainly is. It is comfortable as they always are. I was looking for a running shoe that is sturdy enough for some moderate hiking and this is right there.I've had these for seven months and the tread shows hardly any wear. However, the upper heal area where my foot rubs when I'm putting them on has worn a hole through the fabric. I returned them and ordered another pair. I will have to be more gentle with them by using a shoehorn when putting them on. Unfortunate for such an otherwise excellent shoe.

Sorry for the long review…So lemme start my saying I love the Cascadia 16… and have used them on all kinds of trail terrain, and they killed it! Now, I live in Seattle, the PNW and am training for my first 50k… so got these GTX versions to train all winter in the wet and muddy trail conditions… But, I am torn on these shoes. They fit more snug than the regular 16’s, they don’t make an 12.5 size either… and they are definitely stiffer in the upper… likely the Gore-Tex. Now they are amazing on the trails like the regular 16’s, and keep my feet completely dry…. but I’ve been putting lots of miles on them (120ish so far) with long runs (2-3:30hr on trails), and they cause quite a bit of pressure and pain on the (bunion) bone behind the big toe, exactly where the ... MoreSorry for the long review…So lemme start my saying I love the Cascadia 16… and have used them on all kinds of trail terrain, and they killed it! I was hoping that it would get better, or maybe break in, but it has not really. I will use a broom handle pre-run to try and loosen up that area some, and have had to use a double layer of moleskin on the area to keep from blisters forming… but even still it bruises it, and so it’s uncomfortable for quite a bit throughout the long runs. I’m not sure what to do about it, as I love the cascadia 16 and the gore tex. Anyone else have this issue? i’d bump it to 5 stars if i could fix this issue! Thanks!

I think the 16 is by far the best pair of Cascadia that Brooks have produced for the market. I have always been a big fan of Brooks as I also wear the Glycerin 20 as my road shoe so I find the Cascadia complements well when I switch to trail for at least 2 sessions per week.I like the 8mm drop compared to other trail brands on todays market. This show is also light and is roomy. Brooks have provided a larger toe box than previous iterations so you dont need to go up in size. If you have wide feet then give these a go. I never get blisters and the feet dont overheat which I find important. The show is very responsive and I never feel like I am going to roll my ankle on descents.I have a 32km and a 100k trail race coming up and I feel these will be a good shoe for ... MoreI think the 16 is by far the best pair of Cascadia that Brooks have produced for the market. I have wide (2EE) feet and Brooks is one of the only manufacturers who make a wide shoe. Unfortunately, from one version of the Cascadia to the next it seems hit or miss on the quality of the shoe. This version (Cascadia 16) was a definite miss.I use the Garmin connect app which tracks how many miles I've done in my shoes. Typically I can get the recommended 400 miles from a pair of shoes and have done in every pair of Cacadia's (6) prior to this pair. These shoes started to deteriorate after about 300 miles. As you can see from the pics, there's an obvious defect in the design and the other shoe has holes in the exact same spot. Also, the heal cup is worn through on both shoes which is not typical for my prior generation of Brooks Cascadia's that I have purchased.
This is my 3rd pair of Cascadia's. I had the 12's and the 14's before. The feel on these is quite different. I remember the 12's being so comfy right out of the box, like walking on clouds! These 16's are a lot more stiff out of the box. So that made me a little nervous. But the toe box seemed to have better space than the 14's and a little better than the 12's also (the 14's felt more narrow than the 12's to me). One thing I wasn't expecting, I had to go down a 1/2 size. My 3 other pairs of Brooks have been consistent at 8 1/2 size, but these were a little too big. But dropping to an 8 they felt great. I just put in my first trail run with them, and they felt fantastic! I just put in my first trail run with them, and they felt fantastic! I only went for 6km as they were stiff out of the box and knew they would take some breaking in, didn't want to do too long of a run for their first time out. My ankle felt super locked in, more so than the Cascadia 12's and 14's I owned before, tread is great - zero slipping on climbs and descents - and the rock plate really works wonders in eliminating the sharpness of rocks on the trail. Maybe it's just my perception, but I feel like the rock plate is upgraded and more heavy duty than the previous models. Once I started my run, my fear of these feeling too stiff was quickly gone as these felt fantastic on the trail! The first part of my run had a little bit of pavement, they even felt fine on that... although these are definitely a trail running shoe, I wouldn't recommend as a crossover shoe.
I bought my Cascadia 16s to hike the 235km Larapinta Trail from end to end over 15 days in April 2023. The terrain and conditions varied from nice gravel/ sand tracks and sandy riverbeds to mostly rough, rocky shale, steep uneven rock paths, sharp quarzite outcrops, long rocky gullies and gorges requiring rock hopping, and water crossings. Weather conditions varied from hot to mild during our 6 - 8 hours of hiking 15 - 25kms each day, including one day of rain.I found the standout features of the Cascadia 16s to be:1. Comfort - getting a shoe one size up allowed for feet swelling and wearing wool toe socks.I replaced the original foam insert in favour of an orthotic insole for greater arch and heal support. I did not get any blisters during the trip.Prior to the trip, I wore the shoes for about 60kms during training and did not experience any issues - they were fantastic straight out of the box.2. Traction - the TrailTack Rubber sole was excellent across all track surface conditions providing good grip on rough and uneven surfaces, wet rocks, and confidence on the loose shale track sections and rock hopping up river beds and gorges. The Ballistic Rock Shield provided good protection from sharp rocks without loosing contact and feel for the track.Lacing up using the heel lock gave an added sense of connection to the track with a more firm and confident fit.3. Toe protection - the toe rand provided excellent protection for my toes when kicking rocks and on steep descents.4. Weight - these shoes are so much lighter that hiking boots. Being a trail runner, they do not have the ankle support boots may provide, however, this can be addressed by wearing an ankle support with the shoes.5. Durability - these shoes took an absolute beating and remained intact for the whole trip. The shoes dried out very quickly during normal wear with wet socks and without any reduction in performance. The Cascadia 16 is an excellent shoe to wear on rugged trails.
I have a pair of Cascadia 13s which were my favourite trail runner from the first time I ran them, but decided it was time to retire them after about 1200km. In the two years since, I've struggled to find another pair for a decent price, so I was stoked when I found this pair of the Cascadia 16.I decided to break them in with a 21km mixed trail/road/beach, and thankfully they followed in the 13s footsteps, being comfortable from day one, with no break-in necessary. The lugs look a little smaller than the older 13s, but that wasn't an issue today. The inner sole seems firmer than on the old 13s. They still have the funny velcro straps on the back (for strapping them together, I think), but they also appear to have a new key attachment system under the laces.Brooks ... MoreI have a pair of Cascadia 13s which were my favourite trail runner from the first time I ran them, but decided it was time to retire them after about 1200km. They still have the funny velcro straps on the back (for strapping them together, I think), but they also appear to have a new key attachment system under the laces.Brooks really delivered with this shoe, maintaining a super light and breathable/quick-drying trail runner, with an excellent rock shield, and seemingly good durability.Pros:- Super light- Great rock protection with the built-in stone guard- Provide adequate ankle support (for me) without digging into the ankles- Awesome colour- Neat quality-of-life featuresCons:- Experienced some pinching on the outside of the big toe (bunion spot)- The inner sole feels a little firm, though only when I put them on; it provided ample cushion while runningI suspect both cons will dissipate as the shoes are broken in. I guess that makes me a liar, because I said that no break-in was necessary. But I stand by that, because overall, it was a great long first run in them.
Purchased these for a hike through North Cascades NP.Pros:Super comfortable fit--much more so than my hiking bootsFewer blisters and lost toe nails at end of hikeCon:At the end of 8 miles, I first noticed the top of the shoe separating from the bottom. At the end of 50+ miles, the foam/rubber separation issue had worsened, but the shoe held through. I use my Cascadia shoes for trail hiking. I have a couple pairs, including a waterproof pair I bought in January (which I love). For some reason, this pair has a strange crease in upper on the right foot where my big toe connects to my foot. It pushes the leather in and is extremely uncomfortable. The shoes are basically unwearable, because of the way it rubs my foot at that spot. I have been trying to walk in them, hoping that it will soften or break in, but it has only gotten worse, if anything. It is unfortunate because I thought I had found perfect shoe. I hike mixed street and trails, walking daily for exercise. I like the shoe generally, but this is not working.
I'm still not sure what to make of the Gore-Tex 16's that I bought for winter hiking/activities...I have the (non-GTX) 15s and it's been the best hiking shoe I've ever used, ever. So comfortable, and I don't remember any sort of break in period (similar with the 14s). The 16s fit is completely different. I was an 11.5 in the 14/15s, but had to size down to a 11 for the 16s. The upper part of the shoe is extremely stiff and/or has a seam that rubs the top portion of the foot. There are 2 extra shoelace holes at the top, and I've tried all sorts of configurations to no avail. I've settled on removing the lace from the top hole (so top 3 holes are open), and still experience some discomfort. I worry it will create issues for runs or longer hikes.I'm really hoping ... MoreI'm still not sure what to make of the Gore-Tex 16's that I bought for winter hiking/activities...I have the (non-GTX) 15s and it's been the best hiking shoe I've ever used, ever. With that said, I'm hesitant to buy the non-GTX version...
