Great printer! I know it’s just a printer but it has exceeded my expectations. It’s so easy to use especially because it has an app that makes everything printing related that much easier! I’m not great with technology and it’s easy for me to use. Highly recommend it’s excellent.

I received this printer for free in exchange for an honest review. For a relatively basic inkjet, I was very impressed with the quality of photo prints it produces, certainly the best I've had from anything in this price bracket. For context, I live with my wife and 3 of my 4 daughters – ages 12 to 20. I work from home, as does my wife. Between our wife, personal matters and my daughter’s school and university work we get through a lot of printing, scanning and copying. First impressions of this compact printer are very good. It takes up as little space as you could expect a printer too that incorporates a flat bed scanner, with a footprint that's not much larger than A4 paper. It’s around 44cm wide, 36cm deep and 16cm tall. The original ink cartridges hold a lot of ink and are very easy to install - open a small door and push them in to slots. The only downside is that I haven’t found many shops selling replacement cartridges. It was easy to connect the printer to my network using the Brother Mobile Connect app on my phone, and equally easy to download the drivers and software to set it up on my PC. I'm really pleased that it still has a port for direct USB cable connection to a PC - just in case you have wireless network issues. I'm pleased to report that I've been using the printer wirelessly for 2 months and never lost connection or not found the printer from any device I've used. Loading paper is very simple – pull out the central tray, add your paper and push the green markers to the edge of the paper. It was very easy to use for photo printing too. The tray takes 6x4 photo paper in either portrait or landscape. The tray has a double fold out part to hold your printing safe so it doesn’t fly off your desk. This test page of a mix of text and a colour photo in normal print mode took around 16 seconds from pressing the print button on my PC to printing completed, using a wireless connection. In 'Eco mode', the same page printed a few seconds faster at 12 seconds. Eco mode prints are considerably fainter than normal mode it's one to be used for text only I think - ideal for saving ink when you just need to print something out for informal personal use. The 'best' mode took (1 minute 46 seconds! - over 6 times longer than normal mode. The text was notably bolder and shaper than normal mode but I'd be happy with the normal mode text in almost all circumstances. The colour photo is impressively good in normal mode, but even richer and more detailed in best mode - definitely a mode to use for photo or poster printing. The best mode was the only mode where you could notice any difference in 2 shades of blue I'd used, so clearly a mode where that eye for detail matters - but you really pay for it in printing speed. Printing from a phone is really easy, either via the Brother Mobile Connect app or another compatible app (I tried a third party app I like and it works perfectly). Scanning is excellent. It's quick and accurate. The photocopy function is equally very good. Overall, this is an excellent inkjet printer and I’d recommend it for busy homes.

Good value for money and thankfully not "cheap"!
14 April 2022

Although this is a replacement due to a scan fault - it was replaced in double quick time - this is a great printer; easy to set up on a Mac, prints flawlessly and all multi functions "functioning". I did a lot of research before hand, Brother have generally better reviews and I will not ever buy a cheaper printer from the "usual suspects" ever again; yes, it was more expensive but to date I am very glad I spent that bit more. In my experience cheap printers are nasty printers after a very short period.

NOT CONTINUOUS INK TANK!!!
9 February 2023

Officeworks at fault here for placing this and other cartridge taking inkjets in the continuous ink category with the likes of epson ecotanks and using the words "continuous ink" in their titles. Also the "inkvestment" branding makes it sound like it fits in as well. In fact there is ABSOLUTELY nothing good about "inkvestment". No savings, no charity donations etc as one might expect from the name. It's just rubbish marketing that literally only means "brother ink cartridge"

No auto duplex printing (OH BROTHER)!!!
11 February 2023

What I would consider a basic function (automatic double sided printing) is not included with this printer. Of course Brother doesn't mention this on the packaging/labelling. Perhaps I should have done more research... but considering my last Brother printer I bought back in 2017 could auto duplex print, I assumed in 2023 this feature would have been pretty stock standard. How wrong I was. I'm now stuck having to manually reload paper to print double sided... and waste paper and ink trying to figure out the correct way to reload it (The pictures Brother include for manually reloading are confusing to say the least). A better idea would be video instructions than a confusing diagram).

Perfect Printing
3 November 2021

I have never owned a Brother printer before, so was interested to find out how good they are, I have not been disappointed. I am testing the Brother DCP-J1200W, which I found very easy to set up, its small enough not to be obtrusive and portable to move around. The Air Print is great and works very well for all members of the family to use. I am using it for work and personal use and have found it to be capable of very high quality printing, which is good enough for business or personal use. Its still early days, but look forward to testing and finding out, more of what this printer is capable of. I would definitely recommend it for a busy family and office use.

Simple to setup and use, mess free ink cartridges.
24 June 2022

Had my Brother printer a month, first time using this make, Scraped Epson, unreliable ink monitoring, Scraped HP, cheaply made, noisy and lasted just over 12 months. I love the ink system on this Brother, easy, clean and accurate with ink monitoring, NO hiccups so far, really pleased with it, does what I ask of it, and it prints envelopes, added bonus. I will be buying genuine inks, I think £55 for a set that can average 750 A4 sheets, each colour gives me peace of mind, I don't do a great deal of printing so it suits me.

The device is really compact and modern and the only thing i will say it is not the quietest when printing , but this is no issue to me, it prints really fast far better than another brand and delivers every time. This is by far the best I have used and we use a lot for business and cannot fault it had no problems ,perfect for beginners or experts anyone can set this up. I would recommend this to anyone really impresed.

Superb machine, but oh the setup!
29 October 2021

Excellent mechanically, and results now are very good. But it took two hours to get this brand new DCP-J1200W to talk fully with my desktop Mac, High Sierra. Printer kept switching itself off. Plenty about that on You Tube, across various Brother machines. It would not save scans at first. I found the driver downloading far from user friendly.
