But it works, gets the job done and the print work looks professional and since it looks low key, odds are it probably won't get jacked. I noticed that retailers online are still selling this model brand new at $449.00, refurbished at $180.00 and used under $100. It seems to hold its value. I just bought another laser cartridge $60 but it will last for while. It will be my 3rd cartridge maybe 4th, but at least its not like other printers where after buying 2 or 3 ink or toner replacement; you will have paid more for the ink/toner than the printer itself. I guess I have to buy about 7 laser cartridge before the ink will have cost more than the device. You know, it would be nice if Brother USA could have something like buy 4, get the 5th free or maybe offer a rebate to get the printer for free after buying more in ink that the printer cost. I think you can make more money recycling a case of soda than a ink cartridge. Staples is offering $2 (Two) in rewards to recycle a ink cartridge. Maybe Brother can offer rewards too, maybe a mousse pad or pen holder after spending $500 in product purchases. Anyways, great printer, I like it and I am grateful to have it. Print On Baby!

I needed to replace my previous Brother printer as age and constant use finally took its toll. I'm rather brand loyal so I went right for another Brother printer and so far it's doing a great job. Set up was a snap and I really just like the way it looks sitting here by my desk. My only complaint about the design is the printed pages aren't easy to remove. My previous printer had a very pronounced paper guide/receptacle that lifted the pages up and gave plenty of area to grab them. This printer has two movable guides in separate areas but neither seems to be very beneficial in removing the pages. They don't lift the pages high enough. But that's a minor problem. When it comes to a printer it's all about quality and I'm happy with that. BTW, don't forget when you install any new printer, go into your control panel and DELETE your previous printer info, don't just uncheck it in the options window. They don't tell you that. Until I did I had some conflict issues with printing from the Net. After I did that, no more problems.

I used the same machine for a decade with exceptional service. My old machine stopped operating and I had several spare new toner packages so bought another on EBay. It arrived bundled in cardboard and plastic. I tried to get it to work and all it would do was show a green 'Ready' light no matter what I did (never showed a problem light????). I borrowed the same machine from a friend which worked fine on my computer with the new machine's cables and my software drivers. I went over every adjustment and even swapped the drum between machines without any impact on the frozen 'Ready' light. An expensive piece of junk that I don't know what to do with.
Read the offer specs and feedback so you know what you buy. I was fed-up with my 2 HP laser printers that were pretty outdated and not working properly anymore. So I checked newegg and came upon this one refurbished. Since I had a lot of good luck buying refurbs and the price was a quarter below hundred with free shipping, I got interested in this thing. I was reading the specs and what is in the box as well as the feedback here. some low rating was based on the low level of knowledge of the buyer resulting in disappointment not really related to the product. I did read and print out the comments about resetting to use the 3rd party toner that I also ordered right away. I did read and print out the comments about resetting to use the 3rd party toner that I also ordered right away. I was also reading that the first toner that comes with the printer only prints a few pages. Let me tell you folks, we are consumers and that is what we are supposed to do. They make more money selling USB cables and new toner than selling a printer. It is good old tradition ( I was working in the PC business for ten years) to not put a printer cable in the box and neither ink nor toner that comes with the printer shall last you ! So go and buy that stuff, consume. Educate yourself a little bit so you can lower your expectations! The printer and toner came swiftly. Unpacked printer, setup win7 no problem (because I have a bunch of USB cables, buddy!) first print came out after 3 minutes. I love the small footprint and quick response time and DUPLEX was a must for me since I am printing my own catalogs for my hobby shop. It is correct that the printer does not come with a USB cable to connect it to your pc. It is correct that the toner that comes with the printer only gives you about 50-60 prints . I do not like that either but that is pretty much standard so I cannot give it less eggs for that. The 3rd part Rosewill cartridge that I replaced today worked flawlessly right from the start. No miracle resetting or any other procedure necessary in my case. If it should happen with the next cartridge I do know how to reset since it is here to find in the reviews. And this printer is quiet, too. Not while printing but in sleep mode or after printing. So my old HP printers will be trashed. Like I got rid of Epson ink printers, worst out there and a total rip off. Working with Canon ink now and it is better, not perfect.

I use the HL-2240 for only business documents & records, mostly shipping postage labels and receipts. This is an unopened purchase of a second HL-2240. Why? Because the high yield toner cartridge, unlike some other reviews has given me thousands of copies with one cartridge. (Brother Brand Only) After several toner cartridges now I realize that it's going to be time for a replacement drum. The drum purchased separately is $109.00. Staples offers the entire printer from time to time for 59.00 which has a starter toner cartridge and it comes with that same $109.00 drum inside. When the drum in my original dies.........bury it and bring out the new one.....Automatic savings of 50.00 for replacement drum and all new printer parts to boot! Doesn't take up much space, makes great clear copies, even in the "toner saver" mode. I'll stick with this baby for business printing needs. On sale, this is a real steal and a great product.
I've purchased three of these HL-2240 Mono Laser Printer by Brother from STAPLES at a very low price. One is a backup, the other two have been in continous use for over two years, each unit printing about 25 pages a day for my home business. One prints shipping labels, the other does packing slips/invoices. That way I don't have to change out paper stock. The unit has both auto and manual paper feed. You can override the auto paper tray simply by sliding a page into the slot in the front of the unit. I like the clean look of laser, excellent for barcodes on shipping labels. The units are a little fragile, so don't kick them around. I did break off a door on the toner cartridge access panel by stepping on it after leaving the unit on the floor. Have since moved it to a more safe location. I get plenty of pages out of the Brother COMPATIBLE TN450 toner cartridges offered online for under $20. No problem using non-OMC product, if by chance unit does not recognize a non-Brother replacement toner cartridge, just push the GREEN go button 7 times in quick succession to reset unit. Very low overall cost factor on these Brother® HL-2240. Very functional for my use, I don't need a big machine with bells and whistles. My backup unit is still waiting in reserve for one of these to fail.
I bought one of these HL-2240's to replace the HL-2040 which was starting to give up the ghost, it seemed, after nearly 8 years of printing mega-thousands of pages. The HL-2040 was starting to have paper pick-up problems and jamming sometimes (not surprising, considering its age and the number of pages printed on it over the years); however, I think the problem is more the terrible paper quality these days (thin and flimsy, not very sturdy at all) than the printer itself. I loved the HL-2040 (and still do! I still have it -- I'm not throwing it out any time soon). The HL-2240 makes some of the same thunking noises on paper pick-up, after just several months of use, that the HL-2040 didn't start doing until about a year ago. The thing I don't like about Brother printers is the paper curl, particularly when you've printed a few pages sequentially and the printer is rather hot.
Bought a Brother HL-2240 several months ago. Worked great and was very pleased until late spring. For no apparent reason, the fan stayed running 24-7. Still under warranty, I took it in for maintenance. After a long wait (5+ weeks), Brother decided to replace printer. Pleased though a bit put out by not having use of my printer at a crucial time, I took the replacement home. First copy out had blank and blurred left side. I printed a few more after shaking toner as prescribed in troubleshooting. No change. Took printer in. After another 3 weeks was told the toner cartridge was the issue which isn't under warranty (even though it was the cartridge they sent me with the replacement). To add insult to injury I'm down to 2 months warranty on a machine I've basically never used! NOT happy with how Brother handled this AT ALL!!!
