The compromise is that toner color is not as deep or rich as inkjet print color - and so it is not really aimed at printing photographs. So far, I am extremely happy with my purchase!

I bought this printer to replace an ancient HP color laser printer for which I could no longer find software workarounds to allow printing. I basically plugged in this Brother HL-L3270CDW and connected instantly to my iPhone 13, MacBook Pro 2019, and our iPads. I did some test printing of spreadsheets, documents and yes, even some photos. The photos, as expected, weren't great. I went through the menu to find "calibration" and ran that. Photos were reasonable after that and all text items were still perfect. The printer responds quickly, including waking up. The automatic duplexing worked perfectly without requiring me to set it. You can disable it in the printer menu on your device. All in all, for $299, this is a great printer. This printer has an excellent value to price ratio, much better than the competition. The features and functions are easy to use, and the print quality is very good. Also, the price of replacement toner cartridges is very reasonable compared to the competition. The reason for the 4 stars is because I believe the print quality could be better than “very good”. Color printing quality can also be improved, but certainly not bad at all. Another reason for the 4 stars is because Brothwr could have designed this printer to be a little smaller and lighter in weight. I just feel for a portable printer it should be a few pounds lighter and a smaller footprint. All in all though, I still love this printer.

Excellent printer, especially for the money
17 December 2021

My wife and I had an HP CP2020 color laser printer that I got from my workplace when they were buying new equipment and giving away the old. It worked great for about three years for our personal and side-business needs, and then it began streaking badly. Given that it was over a decade old, we deemed it not worth repairing. Previously, we'd relied on color inkjet printers, which produce great-looking documents but are slow and consume lots of expensive ink. I researched color laser printers. This one got great reviews, was the cheapest by quite bit, and did everything our old HP did, and more. Having had good experiences with brother products over the years (my 2004 monochrome laser printer still works, but nobody makes toner cartridges for it anymore), we decided ... MoreMy wife and I had an HP CP2020 color laser printer that I got from my workplace when they were buying new equipment and giving away the old. Having had good experiences with brother products over the years (my 2004 monochrome laser printer still works, but nobody makes toner cartridges for it anymore), we decided to buy this one. We have a home network with Apple Macintoshes, iPads, and iPhones. The documentation on how to install the drivers was confusing, and I've been working with high tech since 1983 and was a technical writer for a decade. Once I figured out what to do, the installation of the macOS and iOS drivers and apps went smoothly. The printer is fast, is relatively quiet, and produces excellent quality printouts. I highly recommend it. Of course, I can't yet comment on how it holds up over the long term. Be aware that laser printers aren't meant for printing high-quality photos. For that, you need an inkjet printer and photo paper. We rarely print photos these days, but, when we do, sending them to a local pharmacy or Costco print department is easy and cheap.

Excellent value for money!
1 October 2022

So far so good! I managed to pick this up from a very nice place at a really good price. It was really easy to set up and although I've only used it a couple of times, it really produces fantastic quality prints. I bought it mainly for my daughter who is a student. She is studying art and needs quality colour pictures printed from time to time, along with course work text. Only being for occasional use I wanted a laser printer as ink cartridges cost a fortune and tend to dry up. So basically are poor value for money. Our new Brother led printer solves that problem which is great! It replaced a Samsung grey scale laser printer which is a little smaller, but I managed to find space to site the Brother. All in all you can't go wrong, especially if you can get one at the good as I did, very happy.

Good printer with a few issues
31 May 2022

This is a good laser printer. Good quality, fast printing. It has 2 issues which i think should be improved upon. Both have to do with the secondary tray which is not a tray it is only a slot. It is a slot that allows the paper to dangle, there is no tray to rest the loaded paper. Also, when you put the single sheet or envelope in the slot, it does not always "catch" and you get a print error. You have to push it in and wait for it to grab the sheet / envelope and take it in. This should really have a fold out tray rather than a simple slot. Second, I sometimes have to print multipage documents on separate colored paper. This does not allow multiple pages in the secondary tray. Only 1 page at a time. So you have to feed individual pages or you must open the drawer ... MoreThis is a good laser printer. Both of these are a pain. My old HP printer which cost much less did not have these issues.

Great basic color laser printer!
19 March 2023

Big Brother fan here to begin with, and was just looking for a *basic* color laser printer - affordable. This model was way more than I expected - in a good way! Take your time unpacking - there are a lot of little bits of tape and inserts to remove. Setup was fast and easy (wireless/WiFi). Print speed is *not* awesome, but expected for the price point. It does *not* do double-sided (no duplexer - you have to manually flip the pages and re-insert). There is *not* a full LED touch-screen, it's a small LCD with up/down/left/right buttons (time-consuming when entering WiFi settings). So, when I said "basic", I meant it. LOL. The colors were bright and vibrant! I was pretty shocked at now nice the prints looked - more than what I was expecting, and quite happy with my ... MoreBig Brother fan here to begin with, and was just looking for a *basic* color laser printer - affordable. Had to return because of poor photo printing
9 March 2023

My old colour laser needed a new drum, and I needed to print a lot of photos, so the Brother looked promising with such high ratings. The printer was easy to set up, but I was fortunate to have a USB printer cable because the Brother does not come with one (because it's WiFi capable). Printing 4x6 photos was tedious. I had re-specify four or five print options for each copy of each picture. I tried to a custom print profile, but the software didn't give me an option to save it, just obscure error messages. I could not find relevant online help. The photo quality was unacceptable, with over-saturated blues and other colours undersaturated. I did not want the photos it printed. The printer squeaked for 5 seconds before printing and 5 seconds after each print; not loud ... MoreMy old colour laser needed a new drum, and I needed to print a lot of photos, so the Brother looked promising with such high ratings. At 18.28 kg (40 lbs), it was a bit of a chore to return. Just for the usability problems I experienced, I will not consider purchasing another Brother printer.

Have had a few months, having a lot of trouble with the unit going into sleep mode, and Brother tech support verifies you cant turn it off! Steer clear
2 October 2022

I was talked into purchasing this printer and it's worthless. I had trouble connecting it to wi-fi and the bluetooth printing was awful. The salesperson told me that the toner would last a long time but that sometimes you'd get a message saying it was low on toner. He said that when that happens, shake the toner cartridge and it would be fine. Well, I barely printed anything on it before it said the black toner was out. I shook the toner cartridge, as indicated, but it still didnt work. After $80 to replace it, the yellow toner went. Another $80 later (and bear in mind, i have printed nothing during all of this) and then the blue and pink toners go out. This printer is garvage and the person who sold it to me only cared about upselling me.
