Burley Nomad Cargo Bicycle Trailer

Very little drag and great off road. It's really easy to pack with lots of space so make sure you're not over packing simply because everything fits! The pockets were great for storing my irons, spare tubes and CO2 containers. This made them easy to find when you had to fix a flat fast. It is easy to attach and remove with a simple pull of a pin. When I had to ride the BART in San Francisco, I just took it off, parked my bike in the designated bike spot and put the trailer between my legs. It can be tricky to back up with the trailer attached to your bike so would just detach it, turn myself around and put it back on. Honestly though, this was never a real issue. However, I did have a little trouble keeping my gear dry which maybe partially contributed to not having fenders. I used a space blanket to line the inside and wrap around my gear. I've biked over 2600 miles with my burley. It has been on washboard backroads, gravel ground and smooth pavement. It handles very well on all those surfaces. I even took it off road in the desert of Utah. I will say, if you end up biking in sand for some reason, the trailer creates a crazy drag. In southern Utah our route was covered in drift sand and the trailer made it impossible to ride. However no one rides in sand on purpose unless your insane. Also, other bikers were jealous of my sweet nomad and my companion and I gained the nickname "the girls with the yellow trailer". Seriously this thing rocks and makes touring very simple!

The specifications say that the inside width is 18.5 inches, but my trailer arrived measuring 18 inches to the OUTSIDE! This was really disappointing because I was planning on putting a piece of equipment that measures 17.5 inches in the trailer and it doesn't fit. I like everything else about the trailer, but now I need to buy the cargo rack for this large piece. (Burley product manager, change your spec to match the current build, please!)

I have not tried other trailers, but chose this one for the two-wheeled design and overall good reviews. The Nomad is also sufficiently spacious and has a flexible configuration (remove the cover or sides, let stuff hang off the back or sides, etc) so I can carry just about anything in it with the help of a few bungie cords. I like the internal pockets for things that I always keep with the trailer (e.g. spare tube, although I have never had a flat on the trailer despite several flats on my bike - knock on wood!). I also took the trailer bike-camping once when I was riding a semi-soft trail - the trailer and two wheels really helped distribute the weight so I wasn't digging into the mud the whole way. I can see how a one-wheeled design would be better for off-road biking as it can be hard to tell exactly where the wheels will track on this one, but that's not an issue for me. I've carried at least 80 lbs in it occasionally, and regularly >50 lbs, and while getting started or going uphill can be a chore, I don't really notice that I'm pulling a trailer otherwise. Only a couple minor issues with quality in the past 3.5 years: the plastic flag quickly faded to pale yellow so I've tied orange flagging tape to it to improve visibility. The cover has also faded a bit but is still visible, and I'm glad to see Burley offers replacement covers because that'll probably be the first thing to wear out (they have also changed the design/material of the cover since then). Still seems to be waterproof. I also had an issue with the wheels falling off initially - you will definitely want to check and adjust the tension in the axles on a regular basis. Bit tricky to get it tight enough for the wheel to stay on, but not so tight that you can't get the wheel on in the first place (I'm not sure if Burley has changed the axle design in the past few years). Overall, a great product and I expect it to last many more years with perhaps a replacement part or two - if it ever dies completely, I'm sure I'll replace it with another Nomad.
